Dr. Ph. Martin’s Radiant Concentrated Watercolors

Dr. Ph. Martin's Radiant Concentrated Water Color is an extremely concentrated, brilliant, aniline dye-based color which is formulated mainly for use in works on paper surfaces intended for reproduction. (Note they are not waterproof or lightfast.) They come in 4 different sets of 14, or they can be purchased individually on-line. I was first introduced to these colors in Julie Wildman’s March 2018 workshop “Lively Letters” and started buying individual bottles a few at a time until I had split-primary palette plus a green and a violet. They mix differently on the page from my usual Daniel-Smith watercolors but with interesting results. And even more interestingly, the colors take on an entirely different kind of brilliance when pulled up in a photo editor. For example, pictures 1 and 2 above, have not been edited with respect to light or color. However, in picture 3, I played around with my cell phone’s photo-editor’s light and color options until I achieved the desired effect.

For these pictures, I paint wet-on-wet -- that is, I wet the entire surface of the part to be painted, then drop color in, using a small pointed brush, working from one part to the next, hoping the colors will blend together on the page and result in a pleasing effect. I almost always use the small water color palette pictured in 4 above.

After the paint dries, I pull out my little six-well palette filled with my favorite Dr. Ph. Martin’s radiant watercolors. (I love that these colors can dry out and be reconstituted with a few drops of water.) This palette contains Ultra Blue, Turquoise Blue, Scarlet, Cherry Red, Tiger Yellow, and Olive Green. Once again, I wet the entire area to be painted, drop in the colors, and allow them to mix on the page. This second layer not only adds depth to the previous layer, but adds that “radiance” that seems to photograph so beautifully.

Finally, I usually go over my outlines again to cover up the sloppy bits and add a little shading so things will really pop.

Many thanks to Cora Pearl and her class “The Elements of Design” for so much of the inspiration for my little post cards seen here. ~Mary DeChellis

surprise guest

Left, Santa sent a trusted elf to distribute a gift to each attendee . Above, Jeri Wright participates in the service project of addressing envelopes for shut-ins . Right, Nan Kirby and Catherine Burkhard .

Ed. note: Kudos to Caytano “Ollie” Olivarez for a spectacular job as Santa. He was perfect for the job; he had personal tidbits to say for each individual who received a gift – a great job of extemporaneous showmanship! (Like they say, if the suit fits, wear it!)

Three handmade books were published by our guild for each attendee, along with a decorative white turkey feather, shown in lower right corner of this page, courtesy of Monica Kelley .

Supplies were available for members to customize their book covers with chalk or watercolor pencils

Shown at right and below right: a book of calligraphy-related cartoons for members only . The second book was

an assortment of calligraphic exemplars done by members for members (a quick reference of characteristics); lastly

a re-print of the collected calligraphic tips and tricks collected by our own Harvey Anton, printed with his

permission originally in 2008 in limited edition .
