Public treaty• Mexican ruler promised
never again to fight against the Texans
• Exchange Texan and Mexican prisoners
• All Mexican forces out of Texas
• All property taken during the war returned to the rightful owners
Secret Treaty• Santa Anna return to Mexico
to work for Mexican recognition of Texas Independence and the Rio Grande set as Texas Boundary
• Santa Anna put on ship Invincible then taken off because some Texans want to kill him. He would be released several months later to return to Mexico
The Republic of Texas brought civil, political and religious freedom in Texas. Citizens of the Republic of Texas had rights to a fair trial, to bear arms, choice of worship and the right to an education. They did not have this under Santa Anna
U.S. 1836 Delaying Annexation
• Fear conflict with Mexico since Mexico would not recognize Texas Independence as a Republic
• Texas would be a slave state
• Texas had high debt due to Texas Revolution
• Texas wants annexation because U.S. has strong military to protect Texas from Mexico
• U.S. has strong economy
• U.S. has postal service• Most were from the
U.S.
Republic of Texas PresidentsBurnet, Houston, Lamar, Jones
• Houston and Jones similar policies
• For annexation and treaties with Native Americans
• Houston President of the Republic for two terms not back to back due to constitution not allowing back to back terms
• Burnet and Lamar similar policies
• Want Texas to stay a Republic and get all land to the Pacific
• War against the Native Americans want them out of Texas
• Father of Education• Increase Navy and failed
Santa Fe ExpeditionHouston and Lamar very different on their policies towards annexation, Indians, and government spendingAfter Texas became a Republic there was tension between Anglos and Mexican Texans because Anglos thought Mexican Texans supported Mexico in the war
Political Parties and Election of 1844
Democrats• Represented farmers and laborers• For Manifest Destiny want U.S to
get land from coast to coast• For Annexation of Texas• Support James K. Polk• Polk wins election and becomes
President of U.S he is the President that favored statehood for Texas and helps bring it about through a Joint Resolution since the Treaty of Annexation failed. The Joint Resolution makes Texas a State and not a territory
Whigs• Represented business and
commercial interest• Against Manifest Destiny
and annexation of Texas because of slavery issue and could cause war with Mexico
• Support Henry Clay who later creates the Compromise of 1850
The government of Mexico do not like Polk’s position on annexation they prefer Henry Clay’s positionThe farmers would not prefer Clay’s position on annexation but would prefer Polk’s position towards annexation
Annexation of Texas and Constitution
Treaty of Annexation• Need two thirds of Senate
to approve treaty, can not get this due to slavery issue because Texas would become a slave state and concerns about war with Mexico
• Texas would be a territory and not a state
Joint Resolution• Need simple majority of
congress to pass need one more than half the Senators and one more than half the House of Representatives
• Joint Resolution passes and Texas becomes a State not a territory and Texas could be divided into five states if they wanted. Texas voters approved annexation after the Texas Legislature approved annexation
The constitution of the Republic of Texas and State constitution of 1845 brought about political freedom by creating the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branchThey also protected the system of slavery
Mexico agreed to recognize Texas as a country if they would not become a state of the U.S. but it was to late and Texas became the 28th state to join the Union
Mexican War 1846-1848• Causes of the Mexican War were a result of the Joint Resolution passed
by President Polk. The annexation of Texas caused a dispute over Texas boundary. Mexico wanted the Nueces River and the U.S. wanted the Rio Grande River for their boundary. Mexico did not like the westward expansion of U.S. trade in that region
• Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to offer them 30 million for the Rio Grande to be the boundary and to have Mexico cede California and western half of New Mexico to the U.S. Mexico would not meet with John Slidell
• Fighting begins when Polk sends General Zachary Taylor across the Nueces River towards the disputed area near the Rio Grande, this prompted the U.S. to declare war on Mexico
• President Polk sends General Winfield Scott’s troops to capture Mexico City they were successful in September of 1847
Treaty of Guadalupe HidalgoFebruary 2,1848
• U.S. would receive all territory between Texas and the Pacific known as the Mexican Cession and Mexico would receive 15 million and Mexicans living in the area would have the right to become citizens of the United States
• The Rio Grande would become the southern boundary of Texas and not the Nueces River
• The Mexican War effected Texas growth by giving Texas more land and Mexico looses 60 percent of their land to the U.S.
Compromise of 1850
• Created by the Whig Henry Clay• Texas would enter the Union as a slave state and California
would enter the Union as a free state and the rest of the territory in the Mexican Cession would decide by popular sovereignty to be either a free or slave state
• The U.S. government pays Texas 10 million for giving up land to New Mexico and Texas know has their western boundary
