The Suquamish people’s clothing and houses were very different from the Comanches and other people of the plains. People of the Pacific Northwest Coast lived in red cedar houses, built totem poles, and dressed in fiber rain capes and robes made of skin.

Jeffers’ illustrations are of the Plains Indians, Chief Seattle’s people lived in the Pacific Northwest Coast and traveled by canoes, not horses. Their cultures had very little in common.
