It's tulip time! This time of year, millions gather around the world to admire the Tu-lip Festivals.
I remember when my parents cultivat-ed them in our front yard every Spring. This past graduation weekend I fell in love with them all over again when I got to see them in full bloom!
While taking in their beauty, through their unexpected colors under the warm
sun, I started to wish that tulips would last forever. One day they will!
Then I thought what Ellen White wrote in Early Writings, "I saw another field full of all kinds of flowers, and as I plucked them, I cried out, 'They will never fade.'"
Today we live, pray and worship in this hope of a world forever made new and the promise of our returning Savior.

Now there’s a thought! Ben Carson, the Seventh-day Ad-ventist pediatric neurosurgeon
of Johns Hopkins fame, announced to the world on Monday that he is running for the office of President of the United States (POTUS). At a carefully choreo-graphed campaign kickoff rally in Detroit, Dr. Carson returned to his boyhood home for the media event. His book, Gifted Hands, describes his inner city boyhood providen-tially turned around by a praying single-parent mother (with a third grade education)—a mother who challenged her son to aspire to his God-given potential. It was the im-petus he needed. Carson eventually was graduated from Yale University and the University of Michigan and went on to become globally renowned for his surgical sepa-ration of twins conjoined at the head.
His political catapult came at the Feb-ruary 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, where—with President Obama sitting beside him on the dais—Carson pub-licly challenged the President’s health care bill. Heralding his political hutzpah, the movement to elect Ben Carson as POTUS launched with a flourish. And the rest is political history.
So what are the political prospects for this Seventh-day Adventist one time local church elder and Sabbath School teacher? Google his name and you’ll find a plethora of prognostications to choose from. While it isn’t the purpose of this blog to handicap Ben Carson’s
chances of becoming President of the United States, his announcement this week does provide our community of faith the op-portunity to reflect on two realities.
First, it will be intriguing to observe the reaction of the press to an active Seventh-day Adventist in personal quest for the nation’s highest office. Huffington Post imme-diately wrote, “5 Faith Facts about Presidential
Candidate Ben Carson,” in which fact #1 states: “He is a twice-baptized Seventh-day Adventist” (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/05/04/ben-carson-faith_n_7206050.html). (Turns out young Ben requested a rebaptism at the age of 12.) Huffington’s other four facts include his practice of praying before surgeries.
However, it doesn’t take a degree in political science to anticipate the media and press treatment of Carson’s publicly stated moral stances, including his po-sition on LGBT issues facing the nation.

SDA POTUS?
THE FOURTH WATCH BLOG
SO WHAT ARE THE POLITICAL PROSPECTS FOR THIS SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST ONE TIME LOCAL CHURCH ELDER AND SABBATH SCHOOL TEACHER?
MAY 9, 2015 5
And how will his faith practice be defined and depicted in the press once familiarity breeds its usual “contempt?” Will Ben Carson’s brand of Adventism become a portrait or caricature of the rest of us? We will see soon enough.
A second reflection from his candidacy is the matter of Seventh-day Adventists in political public office. The often heralded stories of Joseph, Esther and Daniel (and perhaps even Moses)—whose belief in God remained firm in spite of their political offices—are commendable examples of believers in “high places.” What is often overlooked, however, is that none of these campaigned or ran for high office—all were appointed by a monarch. Does that preclude Adventists running for political office? Should the Seventh-day Adventist Church align its support with a particular candidate, especially an Adventist one?
Anticipating Ben Carson’s run for the presidency, the North American Division of S.D.A. this week released a statement of guidelines that includes the following: “While individual church members are free to support or oppose any candidate for office as they see fit, it is crucial that the Church as an institution remain neutral on all candi-dates for office. Care should be taken
that the pulpit and all church property remain a neutral space when it comes to elections. Church employees must also exercise extreme care not to ex-press views in their denominational capacity about any candidate for office, including Dr. Carson” (NAD/Michigan Conference email 5-4-15).
Perhaps the most proactive stance for our community of faith is the practice enjoined by the Apostle: “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:1-4).
Then let us pray for the POTUS Barack Obama and for all our political leaders, along with those who campaign to re-place him one day, including our own Dr. Ben Carson.

6 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH
During this past spring break, 25 of my seminary colleagues and I had the amazing opportunity to go
to Santiago De Cuba for a 12-day evan-gelistic study tour. Led by our fearless leaders, Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Penno, who have each made multiple trips to Cuba, we were now going on the seminary’s third annual Cuba study tour. This was a golden opportunity for us to not just spread the gospel of Jesus to the people of com-munist Cuba, but also learn from some of the best personal ministry evangelists in the world, the people of the Cuban Sev-enth-day Adventist church.
While there, we attended seminars in the mornings to learn how the people of the Adventist church in Cuba do personal ministry in Cuba. In the afternoons, we were blessed with many experiences of going into people’s homes and visiting with non-church members, as well as the el-derly. In the evenings, meetings were held where many of my seminary classmates preached God’s word to help lead people to Christ. On our afternoon visitations we sang songs, studied the Bible, and prayed with families about their needs and family members. We also encouraged everyone we saw to attend the evening meetings.

ON FIRE FOR GOD
MAY 9, 2015 7
Cuba is close in size to Pennsylvania and has a population of 11 million people; it is mostly Roman Catholic and there is much work to be done there. Conditions are in-credibly poor, and spiritualism is rampant. I have been to over 10 countries, including places in Central America and Southeast Asia, and the people in Cuba are some of the poorest I have ever seen. Despite that fact, I was astonished at how passionate and driven the members of the Adventist church were. They eagerly told anyone they came across, friend or stranger, about the love of Jesus and his second coming.
The adults were such great leaders and were so enthusiastic about training the young people to work for Christ. The young people were fearless when it came to knocking on doors and introducing themselves to complete strangers to tell them about Jesus and inviting them to the evening meetings, in addition to offering them Bible studies. Their excitement for Jesus was simply contagious! I have only so many words I can use for this letter. And I wish I could tell you about all the expe-riences we had on this mission trip. But I am here to tell you that God is working in an amazing way in Santiago De Cuba. Church members in Cuba had been knocking on doors and following up on leads for months before we even got to Cuba, studying God’s word and praying with these people. On our end, we saw people who were physically healed that very evening after hearing one of our seminarian’s sermons. We witnessed people smash their Santeria idols into the ground and burn their voodoo dolls, all in the name of Jesus. During one evening meeting, there was even an individual
who came forward, confessing that he once killed innocent White South African people when he served in the military and had carried this guilt with him for years. He gave his heart to Jesus that night and right away felt forgiven and a huge weight was lifted off of his chest. We were incredibly blessed to be able to be a part of the
reaping process, and to see how evangelistic ministry can be done success-fully. There is no internet in Cuba for anyone, and toilet seats are extremely rare. But one thing is ev-ident, and that’s that God is working miracles there. It should be noted that the people of the Adventist church here in Michigan and in other places in the U.S. graciously con-tributed enough funds to
buy 100 bicycles and 54 tablets for many of the Bible workers in Cuba so that they can continue to spread God’s word to the people of Cuba in the most efficient manner possible. Roughly 100 people were baptized by the end of the meetings, with many more giving their hearts to Jesus and asking for baptismal studies. To God be the glory.
Trey Sharp is a Seminary student here at Andrews University.
WE WITNESSED PEOPLE SMASH THEIR SANTERIA IDOLS INTO THE GROUND AND BURN THEIR VOODOO DOLLS, ALL IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

Words of thanksgiving mingle with descriptive music during today's Opening Voluntary. "All
Creatures of Our God and King" (hymn no. 2) contains words paraphrased from Francis of Assisi's beautiful original text. Francis was born into a wealthy Italian family, but while young he renounced worldly wealth and embraced voluntary poverty. Regarding "All Creatures," one
commentator notes, "Francis of Assisi's love for all nature is beautifully set forth. . . . In 1225, very ill and temporarily blind, Francis took refuge from the summer heat in a straw hut at San Damiano. His discomfort was increased by a horde of field mice which also occupied the hut. Under these circumstances he wrote this magnificant lauda . . . praising God for all his creatures."
