You may not give your digestive tract much thought until something goes wrong, but it is on duty 24/7 in an effort

to energize and nourish your entire body. Every bite you take triggers a cascade of func-tions that break down and process the foods you eat. The ultimate goal? To ensure that each and every cell in the body gets all the nutrients it needs to function properly while eliminating waste and harmful com-pounds that can undermine good health.

When anything in this complex system goes awry, you may be missing out on the vital nutrients you need for good health. What’s more, digestive dysfunction can manifest itself as stomach upset, heartburn, gas, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. Chronically poor digestion can also lead to more serious problems like gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Fortunately, you can restore digestive function with the strategies in the following chapters. But first, let’s look at how this amazing system works to keep us healthy.

the lowdown on leaky gutYour large intestine is naturally permeable. This allows small molecules containing vital nutrients to

pass through the intestinal wall where they are picked up by the bloodstream. Because the cells in the intestinal lining form tight junctions that regulate this permeability, harmful compounds can’t traverse the intestinal barrier. But a number of factors can irritate and inflame the lining. The most common culprits include gluten, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, toxins, stress, and even age. When the tight junctions break apart, the digestive barrier loses its selectivity and allows bacteria, toxins, and undigested food to “leak” into the bloodstream. Once this occurs, your immune system targets these “foreign invaders” as pathogens and attacks them.

Reducing inflammation, supporting healthy cell development, and enhancing tight junctions in the intestine are crucial steps for anyone with leaky gut syndrome. In addition to removing the factors that compromise gut barrier function, supplementing with the amino acid l-glutamine can provide fuel for the cells lining the intestines. According to one study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterol-ogy, l-glutamine acts like metabolic “glue” to help repair intestinal damage. Other research by Israeli investigators shows that l-glutamine can help ward off inflammation by boosting antioxidant action and energizing the cells of the intestinal wall.

chewed up food travels through the esophagus to the stomach where it’s blended with hydrochloric acid to form a thick liquid called chyme. After the stomach empties the chyme into the small intestine, the pancreas secretes a wide array of enzymes that further break down the protein, carbohydrates, and fat in the food. These key nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream via millions of tiny, fingerlike projections called villi, before traveling to the liver where they are converted into a form that can be used by your cells. What’s left in the small intestine passes into the large intestine—sometimes called the colon—where billions upon billions of bacteria transform it into waste that can be eliminated from the body.

As complicated as digestion is, it’s a wonder things don’t go wrong more often. When they do, the ensuing diges-tive problems can prevent key nutrients from being absorbed. This can have a direct impact on your overall health. Fortunately, the simple lifestyle changes in the following chapters can keep your belly happy and your body well.

❶ The Standard American Diet that is low in fiber and nutrients, packed with sugar, and laced with chemical additives.

❷ Overuse of medications, such as antacids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antiobotics.

❸ Exposure to harmful chemicals, such as mercury and mold, that damage normal gut function.

❹ Lack of adequate digestive enzymes, which can be caused by age, acid-blocking medications, or a zinc deficiency.

❺ Chronic stress, which can alter the gut’s nervous system. Over time, stress can compromise your intestinal integrity.

Chapter Two

Ease Digestive Distress

Everyone suffers from periodic bouts of digestive distress. Luckily, most digestive upset is tem-porary. Some common digestive ills, however,

can be chronic. The good news is that, whether you’re suffering from a passing upset or a more serious long-term condition, the following supplements and lifestyle changes can help bring quick relief.

constipation is typically defined as having fewer than three bowel movements in a week. When you do go, stool can be hard, dry, and painful to pass. Fortunately, it’s easy to remedy occasional constipa-tion. Eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides dietary fiber that can help soften stool and improve the time it takes for food to travel through your system. If you have difficulty meeting the recom-mended 25 to 38 grams of fiber each day, you can try adding a fiber supplement that contains natural psyl-lium. Just make sure to drink plenty of water to help both dietary and supplemental fiber work effectively.

dyspepsia is that vague discomfort in the stomach and upper abdomen that strikes everyone occasionally. Commonly known as indigestion, dyspepsia is usually caused by the incomplete digestion of food. For occa-sional stomach upset after eating, try taking a broad spectrum enzyme supplement specifically designed to help you digest proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Research also suggests that herbs like fennel and ginger may help ease some of the symptoms of dyspepsia. However, if dyspepsia occurs frequently, check with your doctor as it may point to a more serious problem such as diabetes or inflammatory bowel disease.

heartburn happens when the sphincter muscle at the end of your esophagus doesn’t stay closed. This allows the stomach’s harsh acidic contents to splash back up into the esophagus, initiating that fiery, painful feeling in your chest. About 20 percent of Americans experience heartburn symptoms at least once a week. Certain foods, medications, and even stress can trigger heartburn. And if you are overweight, smoke, or drink caffeine or alcohol on a regular basis, heartburn may be a more common occurrence. But before you reach for that antacid, try

detox for healthy digestion

Our modern lifestyle has taken a toll on our digestive

and elimination organs. Want to reboot your

gastrointestinal tract? Try a detox! Detoxifying your liver and colon not only

aids in ridding your body of harmful toxins, it can

also help to restore healthy digestive function. One

of the most effective and convenient ways to do this is with a supplement based on detoxifying herbs and

nutrients. Look for a product that includes traditional herbs

like ginger, dandelion root, goldenseal, and yellow dock,

as well as Ayurvedic herbs like triphala and haritaki. It’s also smart to include soluble and insoluble fiber to ensure that toxins are safely shuttled

out of the body.

get some enzyme action!

Enzymes are specialized proteins that play a key role in every single function that

occurs in the human body. In fact, enzymes are involved in at least 4,000 biochemical reac-tions essential to life, and about half of these reactions involve digestion. But some enzymes work only in specific pH ranges. For example, the animal-derived enzyme pancreatin is only active in an alkaline environment (pH 8.0 or higher). This means it can’t function in the acidic environment of the stomach. Vegetarian enzymes, on the other hand, are active over a broad pH range (pH 2.0 to 11.0) so they can start breaking down food as soon as it enters the stomach. Choosing a vegetarian enzyme supplement designed to work across a broad pH range ensures the most digestive benefit.

Vegetarian enzymes are useful to maintain a proper digestive system. They may also allow the body to produce more of its own metabolic enzymes by reducing the need to produce digestive enzymes. Vegetarian enzymes have a strong record of safe use in the food and dietary supplement industry and are actually considered food by the FDA. These enzymes can be taken with meals to aid in the diges-tion of the foods you eat or between meals to fortify the body as a whole. Vegetarian enzymes are not disposed of as if the body has no need for them. Rather, they exit only after there is no more work they can do. Vegetarian enzymes are often preferred over other types of enzymes due to their high potency and ability to work throughout the various pH levels of the body. To maximize your enzyme supplement, look for a blend containing several vegetarian enzymes that work across a variety of pH ranges.

SPOnSOrED by a more natural approach. A standardized extract from orange peel known as d-limonene has been shown to provide quick relief by neutralizing stomach acid and supporting healthy esophageal muscle tone. During one controlled, double-blind study, 83 percent of participants reported significant relief after just two weeks of taking 1,000 mg of supplemental d-limonene.

gastroenteritis is a catch-all phrase that doctors often use to describe any irritation of the stomach and intestines. Marked by nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and a low-grade fever, true gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the intestines caused by a virus, bacteria, or para-site. The most common culprit is the norovirus, which spreads through contaminated food, water, or contact with an infected person. While most people recover on their own from this stomach bug, it’s important to stay well hydrated since fluid loss may be a concern. While hand wash-ing is the best way to avoid this stomach bug, if you do succumb, let Mother Nature soothe your symptoms. For nausea, try some ginger tea or a standardized ginger supplement. Probiotics can help battle harmful bacteria that can trig-ger diarrhea and vomiting. If food poisoning is the cause of your gastroenteritis, try some activated charcoal. Taken in supplemental form, activated charcoal can help absorb toxins in your digestive tract. It’s so effective, it is often used by hospitals in cases of acute food poisoning.

inflammatory bowel disease actually encompasses two conditions: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Both can result in abdominal pain and diarrhea. Some people may also expe-rience anemia, rectal bleeding, weight loss, or other symptoms. Both disorders may arise from a wayward immune system that leads the body to attack the gastrointestinal tract. Crohn’s involves ulcers that may burrow deep into the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to infection, a thickening of the intestinal wall, and blockages that may require surgery. Ulcerative colitis, by contrast, afflicts only the colon and rectum, where it also causes ulcers.

The most common conventional treatments for IBD involve heavy-hitting pharmaceuticals such

Page 9: reverse stacked one color stacked digestion › static-amazingwellness › booklets › ... · 2017-05-01 · Find Dr. Ohhira’s award-winning formulas at Vitamin Shoppe® stores

as steroids and immunosuppressive drugs. But there are several natural ways to beat back the inappropriate inflammatory response that mark IBD. Preliminary research shows that curcumin, which is derived from the curry spice turmeric, suppresses the inflammation associated with IBD. In addition, several clinical trials show improvement in symptoms among those taking curcumin compared to those taking a placebo.

Several studies suggest that supplemental probiotics also have a positive effect on IBD. One small study measured the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus casei GG (LGG) in patients with Crohn’s disease. The authors concluded LGG may have the potential to promote and fortify the gut’s immunological barrier.

irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, and the immediate urge to have a bowel movement immediately after eating. This painful and perplexing condition has no known cause and is often diagnosed only after other intestinal disorders have been ruled out. Luck-ily, about 50 percent of cases improve with dietary changes. Start by cutting back on whole grains, coffee, chocolate, and nuts since these foods can often trigger symptoms. Clinical trials show that enteric-coated peppermint oil helps relieve abdominal pain in 58 percent of IBS sufferers thanks to peppermint’s ability to relax the smooth muscles in the colon. Preliminary research also suggests that taking supplemental glutamine can reduce inflammation and may help repair the intestinal lining in those with IBS, particularly if it is diarrhea predominant. Taking a probiotic supplement may help as well by r ebalancing normal bowel bacteria while also reducing gas and bloating.

Chapter Three

The Food Factor

Not surprisingly, what you eat makes a huge difference in how efficiently your digestive tract works. Unfortunately, many Americans rely on convenient pre-packaged or highly processed foods that provide a high-fat, high-sodium punch

instead of the vitamins, minerals, and essential fiber the digestive tract needs. Opting to visit the drive-thru instead of reaching for fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can lead to constipation, indigestion, and other digestive woes. Over time, this can create chronic gastrointestinal problems and may even result in nutri-ent malabsorption. But making a few simple dietary changes can go a long way toward improving digestive health.

The first step toward digestive bliss is to eliminate nutri-tionally bankrupt foods or those that are causing problems. Fast foods, sweet treats, and soft drinks top the list of foods that are high in sodium, sugar or artificial sweeteners, and saturated or trans fats. Not only are these foods taxing to the digestive process, they are also low in fiber and high in calories.

You may suspect that particular foods cause digestive dis-comfort. Keeping a food journal can help you pinpoint the problem. If the culprit in question is still a mystery, consider an

Enterococcus Faecalis th10: natural protection

Looking to boost your digestive immunity? Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) not only helps prevent pathogens from repro-ducing, it also modulates the body’s immune response. But since the 1950s, most of the live LAB used in probiotic

supplements has been derived from the human intestine. Beyond the “yuck” factor, bacteria derived from people has its limitations. More recent studies have found that a novel form of LAB called Enterococcus faecalis TH10 shows immune-boosting activity that is more than six times greater than traditional LAB. Derived from the fermented soy food tempeh, research has found that E. faecalis TH10 is even effective against stubborn staph infections.

Iichiroh Ohhira, PhD, a Japanese microbiologist and professor at Okayama University, isolated the E. faecalis TH10 strain of lactic acid bacteria after years of investigating tempeh-like fermentation processes. Using an innovative three-year natural temperature fermentation process, E. faecalis TH10 is created using seasonally ripe, wild- harvested vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and seaweeds that, when added at optimal times of the year, form short-chain oligosaccharides. The resulting probiotic strain stays in the gut for about 11 days, giving it time to attack pathogens and aid friendly flora growth. A study published in the Japanese Journal of Dairy and Food Science showed that E. faecalis TH10 had about 6.25 times more proteolytic activity compared to 46 typical lactic acid bacteria strains.

Today, Dr. Ohhira creates powerful probiotic supplements that combine E. faecalis TH10 with a variety of lacto-bacillius and bifidobacterium strains. Each capsule also includes organic acids and naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids to support whole health. What’s missing also matters. With a focus on efficacy and purity, Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics contain no artificial ingredients, flavorings, colorings, preservatives, or GMO ingredients. They are also dairy and gluten free.

elimination diet. Often used to identify food sensitivities, an elimination diet isn’t complicated. Simply eliminate potentially troublesome foods like gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, beef, pork, chicken, nuts, beans, lentils, coffee, citrus, and nightshade veggies for three to four weeks. Then slowly reintroduce each food—one at a time—and record your physical and emotional response.

It’s also smart to fill up on healthy fare. Here are a few tips to get you started:

eat real food. Swap out overly processed and packaged foods for fresh fruits and veggies, high-quality lean meats, and good-for-you fats.

fill up on fiber. Fiber adds bulk to the stool and helps it move through the colon quicker, which helps prevent digestive problems like constipation and diarrhea. It also boosts beneficial bac-teria and reduces the risk of colon and rectal cancers. Shoot for 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day from fresh fruits and veg-etables, whole grains, and beans.

go low fat. Too much dietary fat slows digestion, which can lead to heartburn, bloating, and constipation. Are all fats bad? No! Trade in trans and saturated fats for the omega-3s found in flaxseeds and cold-water fish like salmon. These healthy fats enhance the produc-tion of enzymes by the pancreas, improve gut integrity, reduce inflammation, and lower the odds of leaky gut syndrome.

Reach for raw. Eating more raw foods—at least one meal a day of uncooked and minimally processed food—can significantly boost your supply of digestive enzymes.

Add more water. Water helps lubricate the intestinal tract and softens stool so it’s easier to pass. Try to drink at least 64 ounces every day—more if you’re active or during hot weather.

Boost Your Beneficial BugsYour gastrointestinal tract is home to more

than 100 trillion bacteria that perform a range of important functions. These beneficial bacteria, known as probiotics, protect against harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Probiotics produce organic compounds that increase the acidity in your intestines. This helps to prevent the “bad” bugs from reproducing. Probiotics also produce bacteriocin, natural antibiotics that kill harmful microorganisms.

The two most prevalent strains of beneficial bacteria are Lactobacillus, which is found in the small intestine, and Bifidobacerium, which lives in the colon. Not only do these two types of bacte-ria favorably alter the microflora balance in the intestines, they also promote good digestion and may help ease the symptoms of chronic diges-tive disorders. Probiotics have also been shown to prevent, and even reverse the adverse effects of pathogens on intestinal barrier function. These friendly flora produce organic compounds, includ-ing lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid, that increase the acidity of the intestines, making it a very unwelcome environment for harmful pathogens. But low levels of these beneficial bugs have been linked to a number of common diges-tive disorders, including diarrhea, constipation, Crohn’s disease, and irritable bowel syndrome.

One of the easiest ways to increase the friendly flora in your intestinal tract is with probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, brine-cured olives, buttermilk, kefir, kim chi, miso, tempeh, and sauerkraut. But since most of us rarely eat these foods, it’s smart to take a daily probiotic supplement that provides several strains of bacteria for optimal protection.

Chapter Four

Good Gut HabitsAside from fortifying your digestive system with probiotics, enzymes, and specific

nutrients targeted to relieve everyday tummy troubles, the lifestyle choices you make play a key role in digestive health. In fact, a healthy gut truly depends on

how well you take care of yourself day in and day out.

Work out Your digestive ProblemsExercise can keep your entire body in top form—and that includes your digestive tract.

According to a 2009 review that appeared in Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, moderate exercise can help protect against constipation, colon cancer, diverticulosis, gallstones, and inflammatory bowel disease. Not only does exercise help your body process and eliminate waste, it enhances blood flow through the entire diges-tive system, reduces inflammation, strengthens the mucosal lining, and boosts immunity.

Studies suggest that a good aerobic workout increases blood flow to the digestive organs, which leads to stronger intestinal contractions and a higher level of digestive

enzymes. Consider jogging, swimming, biking, or dancing. One of the best choices is walking, especially if you suffer from constipation. Simply taking a 20 to 30 minute walk after dinner can kick-start sluggish digestion and normalize bowel activity. decompress stress

If you’ve ever experienced the turmoil that erupts in your gut when you’re stressed out, you’ve gotten a first-hand glimpse of how anxiety affects your digestive tract. While stress may not directly cause that ulcer or IBS, it can certainly trigger an attack of symptoms. Why? Because digestion is controlled by the enteric nervous system, a system composed of hundreds of millions of nerves that communicate with the central nervous system. When stress activates the “flight or fight” response in the central nervous system, digestion shuts down. It halts blood flow to the digestive system, causes irregular muscle contractions in your gastrointestinal tract, and decreases the production of the enzymes and digestive juices needed to process your food.

One of the best ways to manage stress and maintain healthy digestion is by employing relaxation techniques whenever life throws you a curve. One Swedish study found that IBS symp-toms improved by 41 percent when participants

maximize your multi

Less than optimal digestion can inter-fere with the absorption of critical nutrients your body requires to func-tion at its peak. Taking a comprehensive multivitamin-multimineral complex can help ensure your cells and tissues are getting all the nutrition they need. But how those nutrients are delivered matters. Some vitamin pills have a coating that hinders rapid absorption by the body. And some liquid vitamins lose potency once the bottle has been opened. Look for a multi that comes as a dry powder that you mix with water just before taking. This form of delivery has the advantage of protecting potency while increasing the bioavailability of the vitamins and minerals in the supple-ment. No matter what form you take, look for a multi that offers a minimum of the RDA for each major nutrient. To get even more bang for your buck, look for added antioxidants and chelated minerals.

Page 13: reverse stacked one color stacked digestion › static-amazingwellness › booklets › ... · 2017-05-01 · Find Dr. Ohhira’s award-winning formulas at Vitamin Shoppe® stores

used a relaxation therapy known as “mindfulness meditation” on a reg-ular basis. Another controlled trial of men with diarrhea-predominant IBS found that those who practiced yoga twice a day felt less anxious and experienced fewer bouts in the bathroom. Hypnotherapy can also be effective, especially in children with chronic digestive problems. Among 52 kids who participated in a 2012 Dutch trial, 68 percent experienced long-term relief from their symptoms after just 12 weeks of gut-directed hypnotherapy.

If you suffer from any type of digestive disorder—whether chronic or acute—finding a stress-reducing technique that works for you can help relieve your symp-toms. Yoga, meditation, hypnosis, progressive muscle relaxation, mental imaging, biofeedback, deep breathing, and even music can all be effective ways to mini-mize the toll stress takes on your digestive tract.

up in smokeThink smoking only affects your

cardiovascular and respiratory systems? Think again! Smoking contributes to many common disorders of the digestive system, such as heartburn and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and some liver dis-eases. Smoking increases the risk of Crohn’s disease, colon polyps, and pancreatitis, and it may increase the risk of gallstones. If you’re a smoker, think of that pain in your stomach or burning in your chest as a wake-up call. Kick-ing the addiction could be the key to getting your digestive system back on track.

INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

add a daily doseA poor diet, exposure to food-borne bacteria, even stress

can upset your bacterial equilibrium. Fortunately, a daily dose of probiotics can keep your bacterial balance in check. Taken regularly, probiotics help to keep the digestive system operating optimally, restore normal flora, and support immune system function. But with the hundreds of probiotic strains lining the shelves of your local health food store, which are the best choices to maintain optimal digestion?

Studies show that a combination of three types of beneficial bacteria can support healthy digestion and fortify immunity. L. gasseri, B. bifidum, and B. longum—also known as the friendly trio—are the most prevalent bacteria found in the intestines. These three potent strains produce organic com-pounds, including lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid, that increase the acidity in the intestines. This helps to prevent the growth of harmful pathogenic bacteria that can disrupt gastro intestinal function. L. gasseri reduces intestinal inflammation and enhances immune function while B. longum helps inhibit harmful yeasts. B. bifidum not only protects against dangerous bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, it also helps the body utilize key vitamins and minerals. Combined, these benefi-cial pro biotic strains help guard against occasional bouts of constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating.

A recent study in the Journal of the American College of Nutri-tion reports that this friendly trio also triggers a bacterial shift in the gut that enhances immune function in older adults. During the 13-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 32 adults over the age of 70 were divided into two groups. The first was given a proprietary probiotic blend containing L. gas-seri, B. bifidum, and B. longum. The second group was given a placebo. At the end of the study, those taking the friendly trio had a 48 percent increase in beneficial bifidobacteria and a 55 percent uptick in lactic acid bacteria. Harmful bacteria also declined in the probiotic group, leading the researchers to con-clude that the friendly trio positively enhanced the composition of gut microbiota and beneficially impacted digestive immunity in older adults. But to get the most from your daily probiotic, look for a supplement made from human probiotic strains that are guaranteed viable through the expiration date on the label.

If you’re getting your probiotics (live cultures) from the refrigerated section, you might want to reconsider. Moisture is the main enemy of probiotics, not heat. When probiotics are refrigerated, condensation develops, killing these beneficial bacteria. Keeping what’s inside the bottle dry helps keep the probiotics alive.

Kyo-Dophilus®, specially-cultured, human strain probiotics work better because the natural environment of these bacteria is the human intestinal tract, unlike dairy-strain probiotics.

In fact, independent tests show that Kyo-Dophilus is still stable, even after four years on the shelf! Not so for most refrigerated probiotics (especially if they are in plastic bottles), which die out in as little as a few weeks.

And Kyo-Dophilus is guaranteed stable when you take it, not just when it is manufactured — without refrigeration.

Take Kyo-Dophilus, the healthy probiotic you can trust.

but what about the health of your probiotics?
