FROM MY HOUSE
TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
It has been six weeks since we celebrated our Lord’s
resurrection, but the story did not end there. For the past six
weeks, we have walked with the risen Lord, and next week we
will celebrate his Ascension into heaven. Jesus’ Ascension
obviously marked the end of his earthly life. However, we
never walk alone. Jesus continues to be present to us in all
times and all places by the power the Holy Spirit. Jesus also is
present to us through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist.
Jesus gives us the gift of himself - body, blood, soul and divin-
ity - that we might grow in faith and holiness of life.
With this as our backdrop, it is easy to understand
why the disciples didn’t want Jesus to leave them. They were
afraid, they had no idea what they would do next. But Jesus
told him, Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. It was
time for him to return to the Father. He assured them, The
Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send my name, will teach
you everything. They would never walk alone.
A few days later, he ascended in their site. For the
next nine days they prayed, and on the feast of Pentecost, their
prayers were answered. The Holy Spirit descended upon them
with tongues of fire. Filled with the same Spirit, they went out
and preached the good news of Christ’s resurrection. In that
moment, a confused gathering of ordinary, faithful Jews - who
had little if any formal education - became the Church. And
the world was never the same.
We are the Church - quite likely as average as the first
disciples of Jesus, and, without him, every bit as confused.
We, at times, deny him as Peter did. We, at times, doubt him
as Thomas did. We, at times, might wish him to rain fire on
our enemies, as James and John did. We, at times, panic at the
first sign of trouble, as all the Apostles did.
How does Jesus respond? He loves us, and he never
abandons us. We are each “the beloved disciple” in his eyes,
and he fills us with the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Filled with this grace, the Church has gone around the
world, bringing billions of people to the light of Christ. This is
the most amazing accomplishment in human history, and it
began with a few courageous people who took the risk and
followed Jesus. It continues today. The Spirit is among us and
goes forth with us.
God Love Ya!

Jubilee Year of Mercy – Mary, the Mother of Mercy
Have you ever found it difficult to forgive? If so, turn to
Mary, the Mother of Mercy. She is the Mother of God
whose “mercy endures forever” (Ps 118:1), the Mother of
Jesus who prayed, “Father, forgive them, they know not
what they do” (Lk. 23:34). She is our surest help when we
struggle with feelings of resentment or the desire to “get
even.” For did not she, of all people, have reason to feel
resentment, to desire revenge, to despise those who be-
trayed and abandoned her Son? Did not she have reason
to wish for revenge against the hypocrisy of religious
leaders who twisted the truth of his words and the good-
ness of his mighty deeds to justify his condemnation as a
charlatan deserving death? And, did not she have reason
to wish for vengeance against the cowardice of Pilate, the
cruelty of his executioners, and the mockery of the by-
standers who scornfully laughed at her beloved Son
stripped naked dying helplessly on the cross? Indeed, she
had every reason to cry out to God asking for vengeance
against the perpetrators of such barbarous cruelty! But,
no, she did not. She forgave. She witnessed Jesus asking
His Father to forgive.
So let us pray the “Hail, Holy Queen” every day during
this Holy Year of Mercy, asking Mary, the Mother of
Mercy, to help us be merciful when we feel the desire for
revenge or for “getting even.” May Mary, the Mother of
Mercy be “our life, our sweetness, and our hope” as we
learn how “blessed are the merciful for they shall receive
mercy.” (Mt 5:7). –Sr. Annette Pelletier, IHM, Prof. of
Theology, Immaculata University
How to Live It:
Read the story of Immaculee Ilibagiza. In her book,
Left To Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan
Holocaust, she recounts how she survived the Rwandan
genocide and was brought to forgive those who murdered
her family through the prayer of the Rosary, especially
the Sorrowful Mysteries. Then, consider taking up the
Rosary and asking Our Lady to help you forgive those
who have injured you.
Quote from Catholic Tradition: "Seek refuge in Mary because she is the city of refuge.
We know that Moses set up three cities of refuge for any-
one who inadvertently killed his neighbor. Now the Lord
has established a refuge of mercy, Mary, even for those
who deliberately commit evil. Mary provides shelter and
strength for the sinner."
Parish Mass for Peace May 24, Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. To celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy
we are having a Mass
for peace and to pray for a decrease in
violence in our homes,
community and world.
We invite ALL families, to attend and we ask that you bring a case of water per family to
be given to those in need.
This Holy Mass will combine a Spiritual Work of
Mercy (praying for peace)
and a Corporal Work of Mercy
(giving drink to those who thirst).
Let us share the love of Jesus Christ and come
together as a family of faith.
