Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey is a sound investment in girls.Celebrating the Gold Award Centennial
In 2016, Girl Scouts everywhere celebrated the 100th Year of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Formerly called the Golden Eaglet, the Curved Bar, and First Class, the name of the award has changed over the years, but the meaning behind the achievement remains the same. To celebrate 100 amazing years, GSHNJ—along with
their fellow New Jersey Girl Scout councils—shared stories of women who have experienced the positive impact of earning Girl Scouts’ highest award in a four-page spread in New Jersey Monthly’s 2016 Shore Guide. The
stories that these women shared—spanning generations and disciplines—exemplified everything that is good and unique about Girl Scouting. The celebration continued in May when ten girls from across the four New Jersey Girl Scout councils visited Senator Cory Booker’s office in Newark. He sat with them in an hour-long roundtable discussion as each girl had the opportunity to tell him about their Gold Award projects. Senator Booker expressed his excitement and the hope he has for our New Jersey Gold Awardees as they continue to be fearless,
courageous, innovative, and creative in their contributions to their communities and the world. The excitement didn’t stop there! In June, GSUSA hosted a Gold Award Centennial celebration on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. Girl Scouts from across the country had the opportunity to highlight their Gold Award projects and talk with members of the United States Senate and Congress about important issues impacting the world. GSHNJ’s CEO Pat Carroll and Board Chair, Nancy Faulks joined 2016 Gold Awardee Julie Averbach in D.C. as they celebrated Gold awardees everywhere. We send a special thank you to The Provident Bank Foundation and Comcast for their generous support of the 100th Year of the Gold campaign.
Young Women of Vision
What do you get when you spend the morning with successful women who shared stories about how they achieved their goals? Inspiration to last a lifetime. We are thrilled to share that our inaugural Young Women of Vision Leadership Breakfast was a huge success! We all learned so much from our wonderful panelists, and we shared a truly inspiring morning with our sister Girl Scouts exploring what leadership means, how Girl Scouts has shaped individual leadership styles, and celebrating the transformative work that is being done in the
community through Take Action projects. The morning discussion was moderated by Tami Erwin, Senior Vice President & Group President at Verizon, and featured TIME Person of the Year & Founder of More Than Me, Katie Meyler, Emmy-winning NBC Producer, Lauren Ruderman, and select recent Gold Awardees, Kyla Bates, Sarah Dedinsky, Laura Lin, Julie McEldoon. Our 2017 Young Women of Vision Leadership Breakfast will be held on May 24, 2017 from 7:30 a.m.–10:00 a.m. at Basking Ridge Country Club. Check our website for more information and registration info.
GSHNJ’s Girl Scout Museum Grand Opening
In September 2016, we excitedly announced the grand opening of the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Museum—the first museum in New Jersey solely dedicated to the rich history of Girl Scouting. Roughly
80 past and present Girl Scouts and Girl Scout volunteers came through the museum to celebrate this accomplishment with us. Located in Westfield at one of our council service centers, our museum wouldn’t have been possible without three of our highly dedicated volunteers, Nancy Avery, Dolores Kresge, and Sherley Penrose who collected, cataloged, and archived donations of personal items and unique, important pieces of Girl Scout history. The museum features uniforms dating back to the 1920’s, vintage camp memorabilia, registration cards from the 1930s, extensive badge collections, and more. The grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony conducted by Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitsky and GSHNJ Board of Directors Chair Nancy Faulks. Also in attendance was Virginia Wolf, a Girl Scout who earned her Golden Eaglet in the 1930’s. Visit our website for more information on how you can take a tour of our museum!
GSHNJ’s 2016 National Young Woman of Distinction
GSHNJ Gold Awardee, Julie Averbach, was named by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) as a 2016 National Young Woman of Distinction, the organization’s most prestigious honor. Annually, GSUSA selects ten National Young Women of Distinction among Girl Scout candidates who have earned their Gold Award, which represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Julie joins 2009 NYWOD Shannon McNamara of Basking Ridge and 2013 NYWOD Nicole York of Montgomery—both Girl Scout alumnae from GSHNJ. For her Gold Award project, Julie created a comic book called Adventures From
My World. The book features six unique stories and is a way to help support siblings of individuals with special needs. Through her project, Julie wanted to make sure that these siblings always feel comforted and reassured that they are neither alone nor forgotten. “What makes AFMW unique and innovative is that it was both written from the point of view of a teenage sibling and presents real issues in a visually appealing comic book format,” Julie says. “Due to the overwhelming response and demand for the comic book, I ordered an additional 8,000 copies to continue distributing to siblings, special needs groups, educational institutions, hospitals, and clinics around the country.”
Our Commitment to the Outdoors Our commitment to our camps and the outdoor experience is as strong as ever. Over the last year, we’ve been hard at work beautifying our camps, and ensuring that they are the best they can possibly be for our girls. In addition to the new activity building at Camp DeWitt, the tebins have been refreshed with a new coat of paint, the latrines have been cleaned and painted (complete with wainscoting!), and DeWitt cabin’s façade has been striped and re-stained. Cabins at The OVAL have brand new steps and roofs, and the fire ring has new benches! Much of this work is accomplished with the help of our corporate volunteers. Many companies have National Days of Service or earn time back by volunteering, and we’re lucky enough to benefit from Comcast, Deloitte, L’Oreal, Merck, and Samsung employees who work hard to help us improve our camps! An exciting and long-awaited addition to Camp Hoover was the Idamae Trenner Pavilion. On a chilly Sunday autumn morning, past and present GSHNJ campers, volunteers, friends, and staff gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Idamae Trenner Pavilion. The pavilion received its namesake from former Camp Hoover staff member, Idamae Trenner. Idamae served at the Summer Camp Director for over 20 years and had the vision
to move the camp into the next century. Under her direction, a master plan was developed and the council invested in building Heronwood, Evergreen, Valhalla, the dining hall, and more. The pavilion dedication was
a chance for many to come together—to thank Idamae for her service, her vision, and her love of camp—and to give generations to come a place to gather and remember our past and plan for the future.
Brownie Girl Scout Makes Big Difference
Three years ago, Olivia was a five-year-old Daisy Girl Scout who noticed that a local playground was not being rebuilt after it burned down previously. As part of her Daisy Journey work, Olivia wrote a series of letters to Mayor Ray Kimble about the importance of
rebuilding this playground for the local children to enjoy and even included illustrations of what she envisioned the new playground
to look like. Much to Olivia’s surprise, Mayor Kimble read her letters and not only responded to thank Olivia for her suggestions, but also approved renovations for the new playground and got to work creating a space for kids to gather. In April 2016, Olivia’s efforts were honored by cutting the ribbon alongside Mayor Kimble at the playground grand re-opening. Because of Olivia and her Girl Scout troop, the neighborhood once again has a playground that they can enjoy together. “It made me feel good that I could do something good for my neighborhood,” Olivia says. “The best thing that happened was that my Girl Scout troop grew to 27 girls.” Additionally, as part of a partnership between GSUSA and the Disney Channel in the fall, Olivia was selected to be filmed for a special spot on the popular children’s television network! Her story embodies the same characteristics as Disney’s newest princess, Elena of Avalor—she’s a collaborative, communicative, and confident leader. GSHNJ was thrilled that the Disney Channel recognized that Olivia is an outstanding example of what it means to be a G.I.R.L.TM—a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, and leader.
From the CEO & Board Chair...
Patricia Carroll, CEO Nancy Faulks, Board Chair
Dear Friend of Girl Scouting,
Girl Scouting has always given girls the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and in 2016, we celebrated in a big way. All four New Jersey Girl Scout councils joined together to commemorate the centennial of the Girl Scout Gold Award (Girl Scouts’ highest award) by taking part in a year-long celebration and visibility campaign.
The campaign—supported by The Provident Bank Foundation and Comcast—included a special section in New Jersey Monthly, a video highlighting the impact of the Gold Award, and subsequent public service message, a roundtable discussion with Senator Cory Booker, and a GSUSA national advocacy day in Washington, D.C.
We were thrilled that Julie Averbach, a Girl Scout and Gold Awardee from Millburn, NJ, was recognized as a 2016 National Young Woman of Distinction by Girl Scouts of the USA. Julie joins an elite group of superlative young women from GSHNJ including 2009 NYWOD Shannon McNamara and 2013 NYWOD Nicole York.
As we look ahead, we are working hard to solidify our infrastructure, our commitment to the outdoors and camp master plans, investment in Volunteer Systems, and expanding our programming for girls and volunteers.
Thanks to you—our volunteers, parents, and donors—our girls are leading the way, both locally and globally. We know that when girls succeed, society benefits. On behalf of the nearly 30,000 girl and adult members of our council, we thank you for always making girls’ leadership development a priority. Your support makes a world of difference.
Yours in Scouting,
Julie Averbach with Congressman Albio Sires.
