Dear Immanuel Congregation,

Our congregation is exploring participation in the LCMS re:V itality Lutheran revi-

From the Pastor’s Desk

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at

the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. — 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

“God IS Good….Really” Psalm 107:1 – Oh give thanks to the

LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast

love endures forever!

No question – on the fourth Thursday of

this month, at least in America, everybody

ought to be thanking God. They ought to

be, but many won’t. Why?

It’s not that we don’t know how to give

thanks. When we were young, we were

taught to say, “thank you” for all the gifts

we received, even the ones we didn’t like.

You remember, mom would say, “Honey,

don’t forget to thank Aunt Millie for your

monogrammed knee socks.” And if you

hesitated, she gave you the look that said,

“Say thank you, or you’re going to have a

time-out that’s going to take you into your

Social Security years.”

No, we all teach our children to give

thanks.

So, what’s the problem on Thanksgiving

Day? Why do people hesitate? Let’s look

at our verse again: “O give thanks unto the

Lord, for He is good.” Maybe that’s the

problem. Maybe we don’t believe the

Lord is good. I mean, listen to the crowds

after a tragedy. “Why, God? Why?” is

what you’ll hear. Do people believe the

Lord is good? Many don’t. Most prefer

to blame Him for every problem and pain,

every disappointment, distress, dissatisfac-

tion, disenchantment, and disaster.

They may not have changed the oil in their

car for 20,000 miles, but when their en-

gine blows up, it’s “Why God? Why?”

Time and again, God gets the blame. He’s

the fall guy; the divine scapegoat.

If you, this Thanksgiving Day, feel that

God is gunning for you, then I’m here to

say you’re wrong. You can give thanks to

the Lord, because the Lord is good. He is

very good. It’s part of His make-up. God

couldn’t be bad if you paid Him.

The problem is God is good, but we sin-

ners aren’t always able to see it.

If you drive a car: how many times have

you had a close call? Did you congratu-

late yourself for your cat-like reflexes, for

your brilliance under pressure, or did you

thank the Lord who is good?

Those of you who have been healthy this

year, were you glad your parents gave you

such healthy genes? Did you congratulate

yourself on the fact that you keep yourself

in grand shape? Did you think of yourself

a superman, or superwoman, who was

stronger than all the viruses, bacteria, and

other creepy germs? Or did you give

thanks unto the Lord who is good?

Those of you who haven’t been healthy,

did you thank God because things weren’t

worse, or because things aren’t always this

way?

Do you want me to go on? I can. Those

of you who will be eating turkey leftovers

for days after Thanksgiving, will you

thank God for the leftovers? Or will you

be complaining at having turkey one more

time? O give thanks unto the Lord, for He

is good.

And if you’re still not sure about His

goodness, look to the manger, the cross,

and the empty tomb.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, how many

times a day do You hear people on earth

suggest they could do a better job of run-

ning the world than You do? Forgive us.

Let us realize that all good gifts we have

come from You, including the best gift of

all, our Savior, in whose Name we pray.

Amen.

We are celebrating this month – it’s our 25th Anniver-

sary of our group’s beginning back in 1994. Some

of Immanuel’s members and pastors formed the Sen-

ior Saints and started this senior lunch program,

which had a name change, and is now our Young-At-

Heart group. Some of the original charter members

still attend and contribute wonderful food for our buf-

fets.

On Thursday, November 7, we will hold our Tradi-

tional Soup and Sandwich Lunch at 11:30 in the old

school basement (OSB) and hope to see many of our

folks who started our group. It will be a $5 donation

or only $2 if you bring a homemade soup or plate of

sandwiches to share. We will have a special Anniver-

sary cake for dessert. Be sure to mark your calendar

so you don’t miss this 25th Anniversary Lunch and

Eric Larson’s program, Ebay and the Treasures With-

in. This is our last monthly lunch in the OSB this

year.

Hope you didn’t miss our wonderful German Ok-

toberfest lunch last month with the Old Tyme Fid-

dlers; many of the school children came to enjoy the

music with us.

Invitations will be distributed to our annual Christmas

Party at Nuchie’s Restaurant in Forestville on Thurs-

day, December 5. It will be a planned sit-down lunch,

three entrée choices, similar to last year. Vernon

Koch will again lead our musical program; if you

wish to help entertain us, please let Vern know. If

you don’t get an invitation in the mail, let the office

know and one will be sent out to you; deadline for

reservation is Monday, November 25.

Just a reminder that homebound members would love

to have a visit from you. Another activity is the Adult

Fellowship group that meets Mondays at 1 pm to play

cards in the Parish Center. Be sure to mark your cal-

endar now for our November 7 25th Anniversary

Lunch and our December 5 Christmas Party – every-

one is welcome. Why stay home; come and enjoy

Christian Fellowship and fun!!

From The Immanuel Helping Ministry Warm-A-Child

Once again, we are sponsoring our annual Warm-A-Child “giving tree” project. The church and school families really come together to help local children get

warm clothing to comfort them in the winter. The tree is located near the library.

Please take a paper mitten from the tree, purchase the item(s) indicated, and at-tach the mitten to your wrapped gift which can be placed under the tree. We will be gathering clothing until December 8th, to enable distribution to local

schools and agencies.

Also, we are collecting clothing and infant related items to benefit the newborns at the Crisis Preg-

nancy Center. These things need not be wrapped, just placed in the collection box by the tree.

As always… thank you so much for your support and generous donations!

Sincerely,

MaryAnn Kalwat

Immanuel Lutheran Ski Club We are excited to offer the Ski Club at Immanuel Lutheran School (ILS) again this year to ILS students, siblings and par-ents in grades 3 and above at Mount Southington on Fridays beginning in January 2020. We will be going five (5) times as a club and registration forms are available in the school office. The registration form lists out each ski package type and cost.

The registration form and payment are due back to the office by November 22, 2019. No exceptions will be made after this date. If you should have any questions, please contact your ski Coordinator, Michele Dubois, at 860-404-0864 or

via email at [email protected].

Ski Club Dates January 3, 10, 24 & 31 and February 7. This is a five week program.

In case of a snow day or bad weather, in which one of these dates is cancelled, a mass email will be sent by the Ski Co-ordinator, to inform the group that Mount Southington needs to close. A reschedule date will be emailed once confirmed.

We will be skiing evenings from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Students will need their own transportation and supervision.

We are also in need of a few Chaperones in the event that a student is injured. We are thinking a few parents who will be supervising their children while skiing and/or an adult who will not be skiing. In the event that one of our group’s members is injured, Ski Patrol must have a way of contacting someone. If interested please contact your ski Coordina-

tor, Michele Dubois, at 860-404-0864 or via email at [email protected].

Urgent Need for

Ushers

All members of the church are asked to help serve as ushers. Manpower is dwindling and, in some instances, is at a critical level. Any member, male or fe-male, young or old, may help serve in this im-portant area. The duty is easy, yet, so very nec-essary for our worship. As an usher you would serve on a team for one month (4-5 Sundays) every five months and occasionally some festi-

val days (Lent, Advent).

Please speak to any usher on duty to volunteer your

service.

Dear Immanuel Lutheran Church Members and Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are into November! The school year is flying by. We have

had Germanfest, the Mum Parade and Float, Sauerkraut Supper, an All School Sing,

and now we are planning for Veterans Day. Our program is Monday, November 11, at

9:00. Veterans will be recognized and thanked for their service by the students of Im-

manuel. A light brunch will follow the program for Veterans and their families. We

are the only school in the area in session on Monday, November 11 to celebrate Veter-

ans Day and show appreciation to our Veterans. None of our students are Veterans, so

they haven’t earned the day off.

We are in the process of installing six new sinks in the Little Lambs classrooms. There

are currently three classrooms in the program. Each will have an adult height sink for

the teachers and staff, and another sink 17 inches off the floor for the children to wash

their hands. The classrooms will each have one teacher and one other staff member at

all times. We maintain a 4 to 1 ratio with no more than eight children in a room. We

are excited about this new endeavor! This is an opportunity to grow! Teachers for the

Little Lambs classrooms are Holly Tonn, Talie White, and Gina Joiner. All three have

years of experience in early childhood programs and are wonderful with the children.

The Sauerkraut Supper was a huge success. The 7th and 8th graders are already prepar-

ing for the Washington, D.C., trip, which will take place May 17-22, 2020. Accommo-

dations have been booked and the plan is coming together nicely. We just need to pray

for good weather and no illness. Thank you for your support in all of their fundraising

efforts.

Unfortunately, we did not receive the LCEF grant for the STEM Innovation lab. This

lab would have been located on the top floor of the old building. I will continue to seek

out other grant opportunities. But now, the top floor space is being repurposed for

grade school Extended Care. We have a lot of space at Immanuel, and we are using it

efficiently.

As you may have heard, the NLSA is back on the state’s approved accreditation list. It

is a very short list. Our NLSA accreditation covers infant to grade 12. Therefore, we

no longer need a license from the state to operate our preschool program.

A new elective choice, Theological Thespians, is being offered to our middle school

students. The students will lead activities, perform Bible stories, and take part in per-

formances that spread the Word of God. Audiences will include Little Lambs, pre-

school children, elementary students, church groups, and local nursing homes. This

exciting new course will begin Monday, November 18.

We have a fabulous school! Children and staff grow more and more in Christ every

day.

Yours in Christ,

Dr. Anne Stuhlman, Principal
