The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Gospel
Reflection
In today's Gospel, we reach a pivotal moment in our
walk with the Lord. After weeks of listening to His words and
witnessing His deeds, along with the disciples we're asked to
decide who Jesus truly is. Peter answers for them, and for us,
too, when he declares: "You are the Messiah." Many expected
the Messiah to be a miracle worker who would vanquish
Israel's enemies and restore the kingdom of David.
Jesus today reveals a different portrait. He calls
himself the Son of Man, evoking the royal figure Daniel saw in
his heavenly visions. But Jesus' kingship is not to be of this
world. And the path to His throne, as He reveals, is by way of
suffering and death. Jesus identifies the Messiah with the
suffering servant that Isaiah foretells in today's First Reading.
The words of Isaiah's servant are Jesus' words -- as He gives
himself to be shamed and beaten, trusting that God will be His
help. We hear our Lord's voice again in today's Psalm, as He
gives thanks that God has freed Him from the cords of death.
As Jesus tells us today, to believe that He is the
Messiah is to follow His way of self-denial -- losing our lives
to save them, in order to rise with Him to new life. Our faith,
we hear again in today's Epistle, must express itself in works of
love. Notice that Jesus questions the apostles today "along the
way." They are on the way to Jerusalem, where the Lord will
lay down His life. We, too, are on a journey with the Lord.
We must take up our cross, giving to others and
enduring all our trials for His sake and the sake of the gospel.
Our lives must be an offering of thanksgiving for the new life
He has given us, until that day when we reach our destination,
and walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Below are just a couple of the CD titles available in our Lighthouse Media Collection:
True Worship – Fr. Mike Schmitz
Fr. Mike Schmitz, the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth and Chaplain for the Newman Center at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, inspires and educates us in these talks about the highest form of worship: The Mass. In three homilies filled with deep reflection on the Scriptures and vibrant stories, Fr. Mike makes sure you will never experience the Mass in the same way again. The Newman Center at the University of Minnesota-Duluth focuses on being fed through the Sacraments and understanding the teachings of the Church and has thrived under the humble and Spirit-filled guidance of Fr. Mike.
Change The World In 60 Seconds
Tom Peterson was an award-winning national advertising executive, but lukewarm in his faith. Then, in 1997, he attended a Catholic men’s retreat. While praying before the Blessed Sacrament, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation and a clear vocational calling. God was inviting him to use his talents in television media for a greater good... to evangelize the world. We kindly ask for a donation of $4.00 per book (or otherwise specified suggested donation), $3.00 per CD, $2.00 per booklet and $0.50 per pamphlet so that we may continue this program. Please make all checks out to “OLMM.” Won’t you reach out and help bring someone home?
Highlighting Our Advertisers Did you know that Ron Jillian’s Italian Bar & Grill advertises on the back pages of our bulletin? Any business you give them benefits our parish in the publication of our bulletin. We thank all of our advertisers.
