SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 16, 2014

Dear Parishioners, Thank you, thank you, thank you!...to all who helped to make our inaugural Holy Infant Shamrock Shuffle 5K run/ 1 mile fun run/walk such a tremendous success. When Tom Lloyd first

came to see me about planning the event, the initial goal was community building and fun. Well, not only was it fun and not only did it build community – bringing together families, friends, neighbors – but it also raised funds to support the ministry and mission of Holy Infant. Thanks to Tom Lloyd for serving as chairperson and all his dedicated crew who served on the Shamrock Shuffle Committee including Mandy Ahearn, Shannon Deters, Mike Dickson, Mike Dillon, Jodi Glaus, Mary Hanson, Maggie Honerkamp, Brian Keith, Jessie Ledwon, Jen McCluskey, Joy Sarmiento and all who helped in any way to make this event such a success. On all counts, great job! Thank you! Speaking of great events, I am delighted to welcome all of our guests and visitors who are with us this weekend as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day today – Sunday, March 16th from 1:00 until 7:00 p.m. There are festivities scheduled throughout the day for people of all ages. You will find a calendar of events in today’s bulletin. Come and experience great food and fun as we continue this long-standing St. Patrick’s Day celebration! On another note, we have many opportunities scheduled for the season of Lent including our Holy Infant Parish Mission directed by Frs. Bob and Dick Gielow which will begin on Monday, March 24th through Thursday, March 27th. If you have not already done so, I really encourage you to mark your calendar for this great Lenten experience. On Tuesday, March 25th we will have a Communal Reconciliation Service beginning at 8:15 p.m. until all are heard. A helpful guide entitled Preparing for Easter: how to make a good confession is available online at www.archstl.org/reconciliation In addition to our Communal Penance Service, we offer the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in church every Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:30 until all are heard. All are most welcome to attend a daily Lenten Mass. Mass is offered every morning Monday through Friday both at 6 and 8 o’clock. Mass is also offered at 5:30 in the evening on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during Lent. Finally, our Holy Infant Fish Fry drew record numbers last week. I believe that the great publicity from Heidi Glaus and Newschannel 5 contributed to the success. Thanks to all who support our Friday Lenten Fish Fry! Also on Fridays during Lent all are welcome and encouraged to pray the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. in church. Before you lose track of the time and let the days of Lent slip through your fingers, plan now to take advantage of any one of these wonderful opportunities to deepen your life with Jesus. And lest you forget, we have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 24 hours a day in our Adoration Chapel. God’s blessings to you and your families for a meaningful Lent,

Confessions will be held on various dates, times and locations throughout the Archdiocese. Our parish will be taking part in the Sacrament on Tuesday, March 25th following the Mission Mass. For other times and locations, contact the parish office.

This Spring, from March 5th to April 13th, St. Louis will be uniting with other cities across North America and around the world for a massive coordinated Pro-Life mo-bilization—the 40 Days for Life prayer and fasting cam-paign. People of faith are praying that, with God’s grace, this effort will help bring an end to the tragedy of abor-tion. The most visible component of this campaign is to maintain a peaceful, prayerful vigil in front of an abortion facility. The St. Louis vigil location will be at Planned Parenthood, 4251 Forest Park Avenue. Holy Infant has pledged to participate in the Prayer Vigil from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 22nd. At least 2 prayer volunteers are needed for each hour. Please check your calendars to see how you can help us fulfill this commitment. Members of our Respect Life Committee will be in the back of church on the weekend of March 15th and 16th for sign ups. Call Bob or Jody Hauf at (314) 799-0058 for questions or to sign up. You can also learn more ways to help by visiting www.coalitionforlifestl.com.

As we enter the Liturgical Season of Lent, we notice many changes in the music at Mass.

One of the most prominent is the absence of the Gloria and Alleluia. Since Lent is a penitential period, the Church signifies it by removing some of the most joyful hymns from the Mass. The idea is not to punish us, but to in-crease our joy at Easter when the Gloria and the Alleluia return.

We also see the near elimination of instrumental music; that is, music without singing such as extended introduc-tions, postludes, etc. We turn to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) for guidance in the use of in-struments at Mass. In Lent, the playing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only in order to support the singing (Section 313). So the penitential theme is addi-tionally carried in how music is incorporated into the Mass and not just in the use (or lack of use) of certain hymns and songs. Another way to accentuate the seasons of the church year is with the use of different Mass Settings. As we try to strip away some of the complexities of our everyday lives and focus on the roots and base of our faith during this penitential season, a Mass Setting that does the same is appropriate. Thus, we’re using an unaccompa-nied (or lightly accompanied) Mass Setting during Lent. Next week I’ll address some of the characteristics of this Mass Setting. Chuck Chauvin, Music Director
