Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew

that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the

Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail.

The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.”

Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him.

And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”

As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall

we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy

One of God.” John 6:60-69

Pastor’s Thoughts The Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time – August 22, 2021

Restore All Things in Christ – Part I

Prayer for Our Parish Family

God our Father, your servant, John Vianney was a faithful disciple of Jesus your Son.

In his lifetime, he sought to carry out the Lord’s mission and lead others to a closer encounter with Christ. Through his ministry as a priest, John Vianney helped to restore the gift of faith in people’s minds and hearts. He accompanied and inspired others to live the unconditional love and joy of the Gospel. Help us, through his intercession, to restore our relationships with you and with one another throughout this coming year. In our celebration and adoration of the Eucharist, and in our works of service, charity and justice, may we come to know and love Jesus more deeply and experience His true joy in our lives. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ & Friends of St. John Vianney:

Here in the Pacific Northwest we long and look forward to long days and short nights and the warmth and

beauty of the sun. Summer is a time of growth and rest, renewal and restoration for many of us. Over

these months of summer, I’ve been thinking a lot about restoration and the fruit that restoration brings.

Jesus came and lived among us to restore our relationship with God. His restoration brought healing,

peace and salvation to the people he encountered in his time, and to us today. Our Parish Prayer for this

year (see above) speaks to this time as an opportunity to restore our relationships with God and with each

other. I believe that through this time of pandemic, the Lord is giving us an opportunity to re-think our

priorities (as I’ve preached about in recent weeks) and to restore our faith in Him. Restoration is a key to

salvation.

Pope St. Pius X took “To Restore All Things in Christ” as the motto to guide his pontificate. One of the

great contributions to the Church during his papal ministry was to restore a love for, devotion to, and

reception of the Eucharist. He knew, like Simon Peter in today’s Gospel, that we find in Christ the words

of everlasting life that feed our souls and strengthen our lives with Jesus’ real presence.

Our culture and our world are moving through a time of great darkness. We are in need of restoration.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis has called us to this restoration of relationships with each other, particularly

through this pandemic. His “Fratelli Tutti” Encyclical Letter, released last October 04, 2020, on the Feast

of St. Francis of Assisi, speaks to this directly. As we continue to move through the pandemic, and slowly

emerge from it, I think the most important question to ask ourselves is “What do I/we value most in life?

My answer to that question lies in the family. The family is the fundamental relationship God has created

and ordered in Natural Law to govern and guide the earth…husbands and wives, parents and children

working together to love each other and to be fruitful in their love for one another.

Page 3: (REV.) DAVID MAYOVSKY, PASTOR

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING! As a parish family, the work of restoration must begin with restoring and

renewing our relationship with Jesus in celebrating the Mass and the sacraments, cultivating our faith and

devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and restoring and renewing our relationships with each other!

This work is fundamental to our continued growth in the faith. If our faith is to be fruitful, and our love to

be pure and enduring, we must be willing, open, and committed to deepening and forming ourselves in the

faith. Faith formation is a life-long endeavor. It doesn’t end with the sacrament of Confirmation.

Recognizing and sharing our gifts, engaging ourselves and our own individual families in the life and

mission if the Church, and in the life and ministries of our parish, and participating in our parish faith

formation opportunities are ways in which we restore and renew our faith and offer ourselves to the Lord

and to each other. Faith formation done not in isolation but together as a family is one of the best ways I

know that we can grow God’s love and presence in our hearts.

We all need mentors, spiritual helps and guides in order to do this…in order to help us hear the Word of God

and for that word to bear fruit in us. The greatest mentors and models, outside of the saints, are Jesus, Mary

and Joseph. They strengthened one another’s faith by the time they shared together worshipping and

learning about God. That’s the model that worked for them for their holy family, and that’s the model that

can work for us…to learn about our faith together as a parish family, across generations. More about this

model, next week! To be continued . . .

May God’s Grace and Peace be Yours,

FALL IS ON ITS WAY…. Here is a peek into an upcoming FF newsletter: Faith Formation Sundays

+ All parish formation offering + Every 2nd Sunday of the month, starting Oct. 10 + Directly after Mass in the Parish Hall + Formation and fellowship opportunities for all ages Dates for 2021/2022: Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 9, Feb. 13 Mar. 13, Apr. 10, May 8, Jun. 12, Jul. 10, Aug. 14 Faith formation is for EVERYONE (who wants to grow in their relationship with God, learn more about their faith, and be strengthened in their mission to be a light to all the world.) In this model of formation, we draw on a family-based learning environment, instead of a schoolhouse model. We believe intergenerational learning will encourage us to restore our relationships with each other and our Lord as we pray and learn together as a parish family. For the first series of Faith Formation Sundays, we will explore the beauty and history of the Mass and why it's the source and summit of our life in Christ. I guarantee that you will have a deeper appreciation and reverence for the Mass and the Eucharist after this series! Using A Biblical Walk through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri, we will watch a short video presentation, have a discussion with your table group (facilitated by an SJV parishioner) and end with a prayer. Children and youth will be invited to sit at tables with crafts and age-appropriate discussion questions. Sacrament Preparation sessions for 1st Reconciliation/ Holy Communion: We will gather downstairs after opening prayer on all Faith Formation Sundays, with at-home sessions provided for parents and children.

PRAYER FOR RAIN As the West continues to experience severe drought in many parts of the region, which is leading to depleted water supplies, water restrictions, forest fires and more hardships, the Metropolitan Archbishops from Los Angeles to Anchorage are asking everyone to prayerfully implore the Lord to send us rain. O God, in whom we live and move and have our being, grant us sufficient rain, so that, being supplied with what sustains us in this present life, we may seek more confidently what sustains us for eternity. Heavenly Father, we beg your protection, save us from the perils of drought and fire, so that we may continue to serve you in good health, safety, and peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son, who lives and reigns wit you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen. (Adapted Collect from the Roman Missal)

LUCINA’S GARDEN IS A PARISH TREASURE

We are very grateful to Lucina Antunez Pereyda for the

treasure trove of dahlias her garden has been for our

altar bouquets. Lucina and Marie Ganchorre work

together to frame our altar with lovely blooms and to

place a floral offering for Our Lady also. Thank you so

much, Lucina and Marie.

Work was the daily expression of love in the

life of the Family of Nazareth. The Gospel

specifies the kind of work Joseph did in

order to support his family: he was a

carpenter. This simple word sums up Joseph's entire life.

NEW COVID-19 MASK MANDATES From the Archdiocese’s most recent COVID-19 Guidance:

The COVID case count in Washington is extremely high and exploding across the state. Due to this exponential growth and the desire to keep people safe and open schools this fall, Governor Inslee announced new mandates yesterday. The main points are:

Indoor Mask Mandate: This universal indoor mask mandate will take effect Monday, August 23. This means:

All employees, volunteers and visitors must wear a mask while inside any building on a parish campus.

All parishioners must wear a mask during all indoor Masses. “As disciples of Jesus Christ, our goal with this guidance is to ensure safety, protect the vulnerable among us and support the common good. Please remember that many people are unvaccinated and may not be able to receive the vaccine for various reasons. As a welcoming Catholic Church, we must ensure they feel safe to worship and glorify God in person.”

THE TIME TO PICK THE SJV BLACKBERRIES
