REV. A. WALLACE, Editor. OOEAN GROYE, N J., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1881 VOL. VIL NO. 46. Autuinn.- BY KKV.' B. 11. STOKES, D. D. I walked In thosilcncoof Autttmu, Through solitude's sacrcd retrcnt; i I sighed with tho winds of November, . Whoro Summer had bowed In defeat; Defeat, for her green Icavca vrcrb faded, Dofeat, for her bloom wflft ln blight, And tho balmy brealh of hor mornings, Had changcd to thG chill of tho night' And yet, as I paused In tho alienee, Sweet volcca sighed soft through tho air, And though death was stamped on the flowers, Yet death waB transcendontlyftiJr; .. ’ V ' I took of the leaves which had fallen, : Their greenness and freshness wero lost, Yet, glowing, they gained in tho glory, Bestowed by tho suullght and frost. • Tho tints of Imperial purple, Tho crimson, tho russet, and brown, And gold like tho fringe of tho mortlng, For beauty had woven a crown; And this, on tho brow of. November, * Flashed out In the light of tho wm, TUI grander wns dying than living, . And death was a victory won. 1 saw In tho sllonco of Autumn, And solitude's tacred retreat, • That death, whilo so cheerless to many, Could blush iuto beauty comptoto, Could out-glow tho glory of living, • And blaze In tho face of decay, November with touches of splendor Out-blushing tho blushes of May. And so I havo seen in tho human, , Such lives as wero grand to behold Liko forests in frost* of November, Whoso glory wero crownings of gold, Subllmo In the valo of tho dying, As their sougs triumphantly roll, . The sweet hallclujaha of Autumn." Broathcd out as tho joy of tho soul, Bo tho good llko leaves which'are falling, " Aro beautiful in their decay; Tho timings which grandly adorn them, Are glints of eteinity’s day. They fall*but they fall in their beauty, In beauty's Increaso they arise, They bask In tho noon-day of heaven. And glow in tho glow of tho skies. The Parable of tho Palling Leal There ia a correspondence between tho material and tho spiritual, and for tho varied phases and experiences of tho inner lifo wo find analogy in tho grand Bymbolisin of tho outer world. Tho great Teacher still talks to us iri parabloa, and sweeping tho horizon of our limitations points with spiritual application tho entire range of observa- tion our senses take. in. Thero is a parable in the falling loaves wrested from the tree by Autum n winds, strewn around our pathway, rustling beneath our tread, millions of mute voices preach tho universal law of de- cay. By this crisp, and withered loaf we are forcibly and solemnly reminded of the oft-told truth, tho fashion of this world pnsseth away, what is mortal must'decay. The faded fullon loaf is a parablo of m ortality. It is more than a mere om- blem. It is the'seal of tlio warrant issued against m en. It is a witness of our partnership in the material world, our aharo in the obligations of naturo, the tax we must pay in common with all life, Some leaves last longer than others. They are moro forward in the print; and moro tenacious in their hold upon the troo; thoy retain their place and color longer in tho fall. B u t sooner or later all fade. And so do wo. The falling leaf ia a parable of accom- plished work—tho mission fulfilled. Fam iliar, as it is in appearance and simple in construction, one of the weak things of the world, according to our estimates and classifications, the leaf nevertheless occupics a prom inent placo among the infinite host of nature’s witnesses to the divino glory. It lakes up and uses tho constituent elements of the atmosphere, appropri- ating and assimilating them for tho sustenance and development of the tree, while at the same tfmo it evapor- ates thesuperabundant sap so that what is loft is concentrated for tho treo’s sup- port. Thus it serves as tbe organ of respiration, digestion, aud even of per- spiration for the plnnt or tree Nor is its mission limited to thin. linay onough during its brief responsible lifo in dis- charge of its peculiar functions, it still hus time and call to go beyond its own and enter upon «. broader field of ser- vice. Those pores which bring air aud food from tho surrounding atmosphere to the treo, also cleanso the air by'this very work of absorption, thus maintain- ing tlio equilibrium of nature, ns that which ;s food ahd growth to tha vege- table principle is poison and death to animal lifo. But.there is still another parable. from ■ this, faithful witness of nature’s divino authority. It is a voice whioh fills with gladness and triumph, as through death and dacfiy it points to tlio law of restoration and illustrates our immortality. ■ , When the greon leaf has become brown and dry, when the Autumn winds blow cold and strong, the hold on the branch is enfeebled and the leaf falld to the earth.. Y e t that ia not death. W h a t ia cast off is only tho withered form of tho leaf. The principle of life abides in the treo. Into branch, and root, and sap, the active vital power of the leaf has gone. The Summer’s work rem ains;: she treasure is stored away. Arid vyher; the storms o f W inter rage through the bare branches, when bhow and sloet encase each bough and twig, within that troo is going on tbo process of preparation for Spring’s return whon that leaf shall be reproduced in new beauty, and enter again upon its work. Tho analogy holds good. W o ail do fade as the leaf. Tho universal law of decay nbnecan resist. Tim o works sad changes. Hopes and prospects and promises fail to make dreary winter in the heart. There must needs bo much fading in this lift? of ours But what of that? Light and gladness are being sown for ua. Who cart tell what un- known joys, what glorious powers are being secreted now in this embryo step of our spirit’s life. There ia tho dawn of a perpetual brightness and beauty breaking upon the soul which has been brought to lifeand immortality through Christ; That which fades forthem fades as tbo leaf. That which ia taken away is taken to be more than restored in that full, perfect compensation, when wo shall see that the sufferings of thia present tim e, these light afflictions, are not worthy to be compared with tho revealed glory. Wo. mny find sorrow whore wo looked for joy ; pain where we expected pleasure. Lifo may not bo juat what we outlined. But all is part ofhisplanto bring us to the expected end. We may lay loved ones in tho tomb. ■ " Tho glad promise of restoration Iighten8 the gloom. We lay them thero for the W inter. We shall see them again in tho “ everlasting Spring,” when tho radiance of immortal beauty shall shine on ua and them. . W e all do fade as the leaf. B u t there is One whose conquering power baa triumphed everlastingly over sin in all its effects and issues. In Him tho ."e- storing principle is vested. Faith unites us to H im , and because H e lives we shall live also. Our fading then,is only germinating ; the grain of corn that bears no fruit uxcopt it tiie —we need not grudge the swift-passing seasons—tbe closing years. W hat ia beforo ua is better than what is bohind. W o are pressing to that portal which shuts out loss and evory hurtful thing.” When the death damp gathora on the brow, and the icy touch benumbs the mortal energy, it is only pushing off what haa done its work aud is needed no more, Christ, the resurrection and the life, has aaidj. “ Whosoever livoth and believeth in ms shall novor die.”— Illustrated Chmtian Weekly. Water Safer than 'Wine. Rov. Henry Clay Trumbull, editor of the Sunday School Times, who lms re- cently traveled considerably in Europe, Palestine, etc., ftw written an article eutitied, “ Is W ino Safer thaii W ater?” in which ho saya: : , . : ’ “ I havo traveled, not a littlo in my lifetime, I have averaged nearly twenty thousand miles a year- for twenty years at a, liras; I have" been through the length and breadth of our land from Maino to California, and from Minnesota to Florida. I have journeyed also in Europe and Asia and Africa. Ye ti nover found tlio place where it was nec- cesury for me to drink wino or braudy, nor yot whoro I deemed a native wino as safe oh tho native water, judging from the apparent effects on those who used the one or the other. . “ 1 have found some pretty poor water in my day—limestone water, tmvckinh water, muddy , water| sulphur- ous water, water well high putrid with decaying vegetation. 1 have drank water through a little pocket filter, from tlio prints of my horse’s hoofs in tho travoled road aftor a rain storm, as tlio only modo of quenching my thirst with water/ I have drank from the tangled swamps in .the Boa-iBlandsofthe Soiith Carolina coast, when I had to hold my breath as I drank because of the water’s stench. But I waa sure, in all theso cases, that water was safer, os a'drink, than wine would bo; and that if I added anything to it to render it. innocuous there was less reason for m y . trying, whiskey or brandy than gingor or mus- tard, Among the.personal risks that I have bean called to; tako in m y life of varied.experiences, I really count water drinking tho very least, and of all the ■personal risks I . have had occasion to noto in others, from my earliest recol- lection to the present hour, I put wine*-, drinking among the greater. * * * For myself I .am, afraid to venture on the moderate use of those drinks which have by their very use led so m any So m o them immoderately. I have seen, that wine-drinking.anywhere isdanger- oi!i I have found that water-drinking ia safer than wine-drinking evorywhore. That ia my testimony on the wine ques- tion.” God is Good. DY IV. It. The name of this island, writes Dr. A, T . H a n n a , would never have been heard beyond the archipelago in which it stands, if John had not been banished thither. ' Somo prisons aro famous, as it wore, in themselvos; that is, by a long sue- cession of illustrious prisoners thoy havo a great part in history. The Mam- brtino in Rome, the Wells of Venice, the Bastile in.Faria, the Tower of Lon- don, are of this kind. There are other places, not or iginally, meant for prisons, which have become famous by some one illustrious captive. . So tho rock, of Masada, where the Jewish zealots slew themselves to escape the vengeance of the Romans. So, tho Isle of Saints Marguerite, where lan- guished the Man with the Iron Mask, So, the Castle of Chillon ;s. renowned for Bonivard-alone, , So, the obscure fastness in Austria, whoro Bichard, of England was for a timo dating his lion-, heartaway, Such was Wartburg Cas- tle, where God’a providence allowed Luthor to be imprisoned, tlmt he might have leisure to translate tho Scripture for all German folk, And though Bed- ford Gaol was a gaol, it would hardly emerge into the atmosphere of history till John Bunyan spends his .'twelve years there. The rook of.St. Helena would ho as little heard of as its com- peer, Ascension Island, but for that mighty Shade, “ the conqueror and the captive of the earth,” who spent his last six years thero. Thus, “ the ialo that is called Patinos,” hag no record whatever in history, save tlm t it became the place Of exile for a persecuted apeatle And wo may noto that tlio inspirod John makes no reference whatever to any of his sufferings during his banish- ment, What unearthly dignity aiid continence ia this.) Here are no sighs and wailiiigs over liuinan injustice and tbe hard lot of thu exilo. How different from other exiles!. Thq poet. Ovid was banished anions barbarians because of his immoral, pbe? try. .H e takes up liis guilty luirp to m oUrn,in doleful strains on Ilia pitiful plight among a cruel arid savage people; Silvio Pellico is immured- for political . offences, arid he m ates the world sym- pathjza w itli him by his pensive thoughts in “ 'M y Frisori.” But John has a mindliftedupabove itself.' Tbe Spirit of Christ that wns in him deigned not lo mako mentiou of his trials. “His mind to him a kingdom was," Patmos was a cheerless rock, but it waa enongh to stand upon. Ho could stand there and eep all apace and all time unrolled boforo him . He was shut out from the society of earth, but he “ looked, and behold a dbor was opened in heaven.” As Daniel, the exile, kept liis window open toward Jerusalem, John . had a spirit divinely lighted, and: a window iri it opened toward the celestial, glory*— Armory. - ", ' : Communing wife Sod. It is to bo feared thoro is a growing tendency away from the simplicity of spiritual reflection. Tho world ia not becoming loss intellectual, nor is the Church, hut ns a great writer observes with a profound insight into tho perils of speculation : " Wo must pay for being too intellectual.” If wo aro drawn by intellect to rest iri speculations, or to bo so interested in objective theories as to Iobo knowledge of subjective states and relations, we are paying a too extrava- gant prico; Tbo world will go on in its grooves whether wo understand its far- away destiny; or not, but our souls must havo daily, manna for daily strength. The speculations of lifo are of remote and often unim portant issues, but the hunger of life and tho die<;ip!ine of character aro immediate and always urgent. It iB quite possible to engage in relig- ious meditation in a way too purely intellectual to be profitable. Not all thought upon divine things is spiritually fruitful. There is a dry, cold and formal reflection upon the Biblo, or upon our rolations to it, which may do more to foster pride than humility, solf-confi- donco than distrust. To avert this peri! of spiritual theorizing, prayer should always go with meditation. The.Spirit can alono effectually deliver us from generalizing tendencies in our thoughts, and bring the truth homo to us in prac- tical and Bearcliing bearings. H e alone can keep our minds from wandering, and can fix our attontion even when meditation prodiicea keen and increas- ing pain. A purely natural method ol reflection, unaided isavs, b y a resolute application of ,the mind, cannot corise at the best results, for- the reason that only the spirit of God. cari vividly and effectively, reveal the things of. God. Prayer brings this divine help. It does more; It quickens all natural energies, It lifts our minds above the plane of tlieir natural, activity, and opens the heart beyond any natural expansion to receive and profit by thb truth. Meditation should not only be pray- erful, but the habit of it should be sought juat aa other habits are, by a regular arid persistent method. Thoro is only one way to learn to meditate, and' that ia to do it, Not that spiritual ro flection can i be run into a groove and come mechanically, tiut it is 'subject to the laws that govern other mental operations. A place and a. timo for shutting oiit tlio. world and shutting the soul in witli God, will constantly and with augmenting ’force invite, aud at. last even compel the mind to its solemn exercise,: We are often strangers to ourselves, becauso wo have made no regular appointment with our own mindsi; and hearts. They will respond to stated calls, arid will honor'and keep, long-established engagements. Again, spiritual .reflection should bo unambitious. Wo tiro sometimes in danger of being on dress parade before ourselves: of asking large questions; and entering upon iiirge themes arid perplexing ourselves when we (should be seeking only our own profit. Simplic- ity and courage should characterize our interviews with ourselves; simplicity, that our liiirida.inay hot raise ia cloud in which to retreat from close encounters, and courage, that wo may daro to know the worst. Tlio truth ia always suffi- cient to unmask, ita and disarm us,-and gi ve us bumilily and .growth'ih grace, if oiily we will give it a chance. We must, therefore hold ourselves severely to tho simplest questions, arid to single ques- lions, that our cowardien.or onr.mental pritlo may not cheat us of a victory by confusing ua in the multitude or'obacii- r'lty of our own thoflghts.: W e have made.great gain when we have learned to deft! honestly with oiir 'hearts, ’.lin'd to hold them to simple facts which admit ortb argument and rib evasion. ';/' Let us always remember shat hot more certainly does the, habit of fixed attention m inister to succqss in tho work of this life,‘than- it ministers to the fcowledge of God and the victories which it inspires.—-Interior. If ail mothers would do that the world would aoon be Christianized, A w om an’s place, is the; home;” Such sentiments are accepted ly many ,iis though they were the -/sry essence of inspired wisdom. There % just enough truth in them to give them currency, especially. among those who ar® anxious leg* woman' should some- how get “ out of her sphere.” It is riot expected, in secular objects, that women shall never look beyond 6hs. circle of home. It ia not thought out of place for a woman to walk the street, unveil- ed, or to enter a store to m ake purchases,' or even to stand behind the counter all ..lay long, if she ia paid for doing so. Women may teach, or work in mills, or go to concerts and lectures. No one thinks of objecting; yet. all these pur- suite take a woman away from her hom e. The. fact is, no one would think of re- quiring » mother to spend ail her work- ing -hours in .training her children, many a mother ia too poor to afford the leisure, even, if she felt the need of ao doing. Besides, most mothers.find that their children can take earn of themselves, a good part of each day. If thoy can- not they are pampered and petted by too much looking after. Certainly, no child, unleaa an invalid or an idiot, needs a m other’s care every hour ol every day. What du the mothers do when their children are' at school, or when they grow up to maturity ? And what of those women who never become mothers at all? But when the call comes for a littlo work among the homes of tho lowly, or an opportunity is given of speaking a word, personally or publicly, for hu- manity arid heaven, then comes the protest, “ O h ! it wil! nover do! Itianot woman’s sphere!" Can any woman continue to hide be-' hind the aubtorlugea of the dark isges, and the custonia of Eastern cliuics, in this enlightened ago and country? “ Afraid qf gettiDg out of my sphei e ’’— Ab! that excuae will not stand in the judgments of oteruity ! And what will tho church do with tho lady Btudqnts Of our Theologi- cal Seminaries, ueaide many others, who, in-schools and families, are quali - fying themselves, for publio usefulness ? And what are theso loving, conscien- tioua, sweet-voiced woman to do, who fee! impelled by conscience, and by tho spirit of God, and by an ineffable solici- tude for souls, if the church will not let thom work? W e hope to eeo tho day, when, in the kingdom and work of tho Lord Jesus, thereshal! indeed bo "neither male nor female.” If woman has more spirituality and tenderness than man, then let no manlike but unmanly jeal- ousy hinder hor, if need bo, from taking tho highest room .” T . A Correction, The papers reporting **a holt ” in the late Convention of the Women’a Na- tional Christian Temperanco Union, held in'Washington City, have been in error, as will bo seen.from tho following' card, signed by all the presidents of the' State Unions connected with the Na* tional W. Thoro was manifest great zeal and ear- nestness In the work. and a spirit of, liarmony and concord as to the meas- ures proposed for the future. Up to the cIopo of the final meeting there was no •* b(jlt,” no sign of “ secession.” Tlio abortive effort made by somo eight or ten diaatlected spirita the second . day ; aftor the final adjournment of tho con- vention was in no sense an expression of ihe views and feelings of any consid- erable number of the delegates, and does not foreshadow discord in the ranks of tho noble women who' are en- gaged in tho causo of Gospel temper- ance. The feeling af tho close of the convention was that we would go to our several fields oflabor and enter upon another year with renowed energy and ; an abiding faith that our labors woro not in vain in the Lord.
