Notre Dame and the Vatican: A Look Inside the Holy See 10:00 amWashington Hall
A decade ago, upon his first visit to the Vatican, Fr. John Jenkins, C.S.C., said, “We need to work together so the Church can be enriched by Notre Dame’s work, and that Notre Dame can be enriched by its connection to the universal Church.” Take a look inside this unique, longstanding relationship between the Church and University, including a one-of-a-kind agreement with the Vatican Library, invitations to Pontifical Commissions, and much more. A panel of experts will examine the ties between Notre Dame and the Vatican, providing an insider’s view into the Holy See.
PANELISTS: John Cavadini, McGrath-Cavadini Director of the McGrath Institute for Church Life and Professor of Theology; Fr. Joe Corpora C.S.C., ’76, ’83 M.Div., Missionary of Mercy and ACE Director of Catholic School Advantage Campaign; Kathleen Cummings ’95 M.A., ’99 Ph.D., Associate Professor of American Studies and William W. and Anna Jean Cushwa Director of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism; Chuck Lamphier ’03, ’05 M.Ed., ’10 M.N.A., Director of Church Affairs; Msgr. Tom Powers ’87, Vicar General of the Diocese of Bridgeport and former official of the Congregation for Bishops, Vatican City.

Fighting to Cure Food and Drug AllergiesFRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2:30-3:30 PM DEBARTOLO CLASSROOM HALL,ROOM 138Food and drug allergies are increasing health concerns in developed nations. Depending on the severity of the allergic reaction, the results can vary from a simple itch to anaphylactic shock, which results in 1,500 deaths each year in the U.S. Despite all the clinical research, current diagnostic methods are still very primitive. More importantly, there are no drugs in the clinic that prevent the allergic reaction from taking place. Prof. Bilgicer’s research group has developed solutions to both pressing problems, and this talk will summarize their findings and next steps.
PRESENTER: Basar Bilgicer, Associate Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
The Story of the Universe and the Origins of LifeFRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2:30-3:30 PM JORDAN HALL OF SCIENCE, DIGITAL VISUALIZATION THEATERProfessor Beers tells the story of how the universe made the elements that make up your body, the earth, the sun, the Milky Way galaxy, and everything in them. From the caldrons of the massive first stars emerged the fundamental elements required for life as we know it—carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen—within the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Shortly thereafter, heavier elements that provide the “spice” of life were created in supernovae explosions and merging neutron stars. Come hear the exciting
tale, details of which are being explored by researchers here at Notre Dame. PRESENTER: Timothy C. Beers, Chair of Astrophysics

This development has occurred quickly; compared to the United States and other countries, China had a late start in developing railroad infrastructure, building a comprehensive network only after the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. This talk will cover evolution of the Chinese rail system, exploring its role in advancing both China’s domestic development goals and its global economic and political interests.
