Notre Dame and the Vatican: A Look Inside the Holy See 10:00 amWashington Hall

A decade ago, upon his first visit to the Vatican, Fr. John Jenkins, C.S.C., said, “We need to work together so the Church can be enriched by Notre Dame’s work, and that Notre Dame can be enriched by its connection to the universal Church.” Take a look inside this unique, longstanding relationship between the Church and University, including a one-of-a-kind agreement with the Vatican Library, invitations to Pontifical Commissions, and much more. A panel of experts will examine the ties between Notre Dame and the Vatican, providing an insider’s view into the Holy See.

PANELISTS: John Cavadini, McGrath-Cavadini Director of the McGrath Institute for Church Life and Professor of Theology; Fr. Joe Corpora C.S.C., ’76, ’83 M.Div., Missionary of Mercy and ACE Director of Catholic School Advantage Campaign; Kathleen Cummings ’95 M.A., ’99 Ph.D., Associate Professor of American Studies and William W. and Anna Jean Cushwa Director of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism; Chuck Lamphier ’03, ’05 M.Ed., ’10 M.N.A., Director of Church Affairs; Msgr. Christian-Muslim Relations in History: Three Things Everyone Should KnowFRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2:30-3:30 PM DEBARTOLO CLASSROOM HALL, ROOM 136Christianity and Islam grow out of the same Jewish monotheism, but this presentation will focus on three crucial but even less widely known matters: 1) that they are also joined at the hip in other ways too, with the same philosophical tradition and theological language; 2) that, while there has often been violent conflict, there has also been continuous, amiable interaction and cultural borrowing between Christians and Muslims; 3) that much of the modern tension between the Christian and Muslim worlds is the result of non-religious factors. PRESENTER: Thomas E. Burman, Professor of History and Robert Conway Director of the Medieval Institute

Economic Engines:Notre Dame and the South Bend-Elkhart RegionFRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2:30-3:30 PMDEBARTOLO CLASSROOM HALL, ROOM 155Inspired by the University’s Catholic mission, Notre Dame’s world-class faculty and students are pursuing globally significant, solutions-oriented research, and becoming one of the preeminent research institutions in the world. But what kind of impact is the University having in its own back yard? From testing turbine engines in a new laboratory on the grounds where giant Studebaker factory plants once stood,

to giving area students new skills and confidence through a Shakespeare performance program, come learn how an economic partnership between the University and its surrounding community is helping both grow and flourish together. Fighting to Cure Food and Drug AllergiesFRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2:30-3:30 PM DEBARTOLO CLASSROOM HALL,ROOM 138Food and drug allergies are increasing health concerns in developed nations. Depending on the severity of the allergic reaction, the results can vary from a simple itch to anaphylactic shock, which results in 1,500 deaths each year in the U.S. Despite all the clinical research, current diagnostic methods are still very primitive. More importantly, there are no drugs in the clinic that prevent the allergic reaction from taking place. Prof. Bilgicer’s research group has developed solutions to both pressing problems, and this talk will summarize their findings and next steps.

PRESENTER: Basar Bilgicer, Associate Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

The Story of the Universe and the Origins of LifeFRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2:30-3:30 PM JORDAN HALL OF SCIENCE, DIGITAL VISUALIZATION THEATERProfessor Beers tells the story of how the universe made the elements that make up your body, the earth, the sun, the Milky Way galaxy, and everything in them. From the caldrons of the massive first stars emerged the fundamental elements required for life as we know it—carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen—within the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Shortly thereafter, heavier elements that provide the “spice” of life were created in supernovae explosions and merging neutron stars. Come hear the exciting

tale, details of which are being explored by researchers here at Notre Dame. PRESENTER: Timothy C. Beers, Chair of Astrophysics

This talk will cover evolution of the Chinese rail system, exploring its role in advancing both China’s domestic development goals and its global economic and political interests.

MORE WAYS TO STAY CONNECTED

Join your local club. Your local club is the access point in your community for camaraderie with your Notre Dame family.

Serve with fellow Domers. Wherever we gather—in local communities or at a Shamrock Series away game—join us to serve the needs of others.

Attend a UND Celebration. Each year, ND leaders travel to communities across the country to speak with local alumni and friends.

Leverage career tools. From career advising to résumé reviews to our online job board, we are here to support your next career step.

Learn with us online and on- and off-campus. From an online case study to our Hesburgh Lecture Series, continue your Notre Dame education.

Hike! Join us outside the Eck Visitors Center for Football Fridays on home football weekends to get ready for the big game.

Submit prayer requests. At Faith.nd.edu, we accept your intentions to be prayed at the Grotto.

Cheer the Irish together at home and on the road. At each big game, we’ll be there to provide ways for the ND family to gather and cheer.

Support local students. Join the send-off events in your community as your local students leave for campus.

Pray with us daily. At Faith.nd.edu, join the thousands of ND family members subscribed to receive a daily Gospel reflection.

Travel with friends. Each year hundreds of ND alumni travel the world together.
