Holocaust Memorial Day National Holocaust Memorial Day - Wednesday 27th January 2016
On Wednesday 3rd February a group of year 10 learners, accompanied by Miss Assadi, Mrs Newton and Mr Crippen visited Belmont Synagogue to learn about the Holocaust and hear from a Holocaust survivor. Rabbi Feldman welcomed everyone and advised us how the morning would be structured. This year’s Holocaust theme was “Do Not Stand By”. First a short film was shown. Starting with the final stages of World War II, progressing through Cambodia, on to the breakup of Yugoslavia and then on to the continuing conflict in Dafour, it showed the moving experiences of the population involved.
This year the Holocaust survivor guest speaker was Renee Salt, who was born in Poland in 1929. She told us her story of how at the age of 8 when Germany invaded Poland and came to her village, her whole world was turned upside down. Separated from her family. Later she learnt that they had been killed in the concentration camps. Being moved from place to place. Forced to work from morning till night, not knowing when or where the next meal was coming from, she eventually found herself alone, with just her mother in Auschwitz. Towards the end of the war, as the Allies were advancing, she, along with thousands of others, were taken out of Auschwitz and forced to walk to Bergen-Belsen. This later became known as the “Death March”. At the end of the war in 1945, Bergen-Belsen was liberated by the British. Renee Salt is now a spritely 87 year old grandmother, who regularly relates her story to schools, groups and charities. Everyone said how much they had enjoyed the morning, which they found very emotional but informative.
FORTHCOMING TRIPS 24th February Oxford University (Years 12 and 13) 25th February Kings College University (Year 12) 26th February Cambridge University (Year 9) We wish our learners an enjoyable time and would ask parents/carers to ensure that all consent forms are signed and returned to the school office by the date given.

Brunel Taster Day
M
Last week 14 of our budding Year 12 Psychology students embarked on a trip to London Zoo where they got to experience a seminar with a clinical psychologist as well as experience a group hypnotherapy session. This was a fantastic experience as they have studied phobias previously and saw the treatments learnt spring to life. The Clinical hypnotherapist said, once again, how he thought that our students were an absolute delight to lecture. Overall it was a very exciting day for us all. Mrs Corner (Head of Humanities and Psychology)
On Wednesday 3rd February 2016 a taster day for Year 12 Applied Science and Business Students was arranged at Brunel University. This was an excellent opportunity for students to experience a little of university life.

REPORTING FROM PRIYANSHU SINGH – 8 CAMBRIDGE Each Thursday there is Science Club after school. On 11th February there was a competition. The learners had been working on making soaps and bath bombs. Yesterday Mr Gamble and four other members of staff were invited to see whose presentation was the best. They were 5 groups in total and my group came second and a girls group came first. My group were just 1 point behind in winning! The winners got bath bombs and soaps from a shop called Lush. That is what has been happening in science club. After the half term we are going to be doing experiments and fun things. If you want to come, please join us. Have a lovely Half-term. Priyanshu – HHS Reporter
HONOURS PAGE
As part of the school’s new rewards system, we award learners lapel stars to wear on their blazers when they achieve certain net point totals. Net points are the difference between the number of behaviour and achievement points that a learner has been given so a learner with 60 achievement points and 20 behaviour points will have a net point total of 40. When learners achieve a net point total of 100 they are given a bronze star, when they reach 150 they get a silver star and any learner with a total of more than 200 is given a gold star. The learners’ achievement is also celebrated in rewards assemblies at the end of each term which their parents are invited to attend. The following learners have achieved a net point total of more than 100 and will be wearing a bronze or silver star.
