    EXPANSION SETUP

Each Imperial Assault  expansion is designed to seamlesslyintegrate into your collection. Beore using this expansion or thefirst time, careully punch out all tokens and map tiles rom thecardboard rames. Ten, perorm the ollowing steps:

    • Add the Agenda, Command, Side Mission, and SkirmishMission cards to their respective supplies. Players may choosethese cards when building each o these respective decks whenplaying a campaign or a skirmish.

Players should finish any active campaigns beore incorporating

the components rom Return to Hoth into the core game.Note: In a campaign, players are limited to the number o figuresincluded in this expansion. For example, the Imperial player islimited to three regular and three elite Snowtrooper figures, eveni he owns multiple copies o this expansion.

EXPANSION ICONAll cards, sheets, and map tiles ound in thisexpansion are marked with the Return to Hoth expansion icon to distinguish these componentsrom those ound in the core game and otherexpansions.

MISSIONSReturn to Hoth eatures sixteen new campaign missions and ournew skirmish missions or Imperial Assault.

    CAMPAIGN MISSIONS

Te new campaign missions can be used in one o two ways.

    • Missions corresponding to a Side Mission card can beincorporated into any campaign as a side mission.

    • Te story and threat missions are eatured in the Return toHoth campaign and are used exclusively in that campaign.

    SKIRMISH MISSIONS

Return to Hoth contains our new skirmish missions to beshuffled into your Skirmish Mission deck. Tese missions use the“Hoth Battlefield” and “Echo Base” maps, ound on the includedSkirmish Map Sheet. One o these maps allows our playersto compete in a skirmish at once. New rules or our-playerskirmishes can be ound on page 6.

  • 8/17/2019 Return to Hoth Rules

    RULEBOOK

EXPANSION RULESTe ollowing sections describe the new rules eatured in thecomponents o Return to Hoth.

DEPLOYMENT CARD RESTRICTIONSSome Deployment cards can be used in only one style o play inImperial Assault . A Deployment card marked with a CampaignDeployment Icon can be used only in a campaign, while a

Deployment card marked with a Skirmish Deployment Icon can beused only in a skirmish.

TILE TYPESEach map tile in Imperial Assault  has one or more  corresponding to the environment that tile represents. Tese typeshave no direct gameplay effect, but may be reerred to by other

    components.

Te primary tile type distinction is between interior and exterior(see “Interior Spaces” on page 15 o the Rules Reerence Guidein the core game). Other tile types include orest, desert, andsnow tiles. Te tile types or the tiles in the core game and thoseintroduced in Return to Hoth are as ollows:

    • Forest:

     - Core game tiles 01A–18A, 37A, 38B, and 39A

     - Return to Hoth tiles 05A and 24A

    • Desert:

     - Core game tiles 01B–18B, 37A, 38A, and 39B

    • Snow:

     - Return to Hoth tiles 01A–24A and 21B

    • Interior:

     - Core game tiles 19A-36A and 19B-36B

     - Return to Hoth tiles 01B–20B and 22B–24B

HABITATH is a keyword ound on certain Deployment cards.During a campaign, when the Imperial player is selecting opengroups or a mission, he can choose a Deployment card with theHabitat keyword only i there is at least one tile in that mission’smap whose type matches the listed Habitat.

Note: During a skirmish, Habitat has no effect.

    CampaignDeployment Icon

    SkirmishDeployment Icon

CLASS CARDSSome heroes, such as Loku Kanoloa, have a Class deck thatincludes Item cards with an XP cost. Tese cards can be purchasedwith XP like any other Class card and are used like other itemso the same type. I a player wishes to sell any o these items aferpurchasing them, he may do so or 50 credits like any other Itemcard without a listed credit cost.

RECON TOKENSTe hero Loku Kanoloa uses recon tokens to scoutthe battlefield, giving both himsel and his ellowRebels tactical advantages. Tese tokens have noinherent unction and only interact with abilitiesound on Loku Kanoloa’s Hero sheet and Class cards.

During campaign setup, when Loku Kanoloa is chosen as a hero, place the two recon tokens near his play area. During a mission,Loku’s abilities allow him to place these tokens on various figuresor locations or a number o beneficial effects.

Te total number o recon tokens that can be placed is limitedby the included supply o two tokens. However, i an ability

allows Loku to place a recon token, he may either use a tokenalready in play, moving it rom its current position, or use onerom his supply.

    RULEBOOK

SKIRMISH ATTACHMENTSSome skirmish upgrade Deployment cards list the word“Attachment” above their abilities. Tese cards can be attached toother Deployment cards as ollows:

    • When deploying units during skirmish setup, i a player has oneor more “Attachment” cards included in his army, he places eacho these cards on one o his non-upgrade Deployment cards.

    • Each Deployment card can have only one “Attachment.”

    • Abilities on “Attachment” cards apply to all figures in thecorresponding group.

    • Many attachments require the group to have a specific trait, such as “T.” Attachments with these restrictions cannotbe played on a group that does not have the trait.

When a group with an “Attachment” card is deeated, theopposing player scores VPs equal to the deployment cost o the“Attachment” card, in addition to the VPs he scores rom thedeeated group’s Deployment card.

NEUTRAL DEPLOYMENT CARDSDeployment cards with a Neutral icon and card back do notbelong to an affiliation. When creating an army or a skirmish, aplayer may choose to include Neutral Deployment cards as i theybelonged to his affiliation.

Neutral Deployment cards cannot be used in a campaign.

    RULEBOOK

FOUR-PLAYER SKIRMISHESTe “Hoth Battlefield” skirmish map, ound on the SkirmishMap Sheet, allows our players to compete in a massive Imperial

Assault  battle. Depending on which mission is played, the playerscould all compete against each other in a Free-For-All or in aeam Battle.

SETUP AND GAMEPLAY CHANGESDuring a our-player skirmish, apply the ollowing changes to therules o setting up and playing a skirmish, ound on page 4 o theSkirmish Guide in the core game:

    • In step 3 o Skirmish Setup, “Determine and set up SkirmishMission,” players do not use their standard Skirmish Missiondeck, but rather, use a deck that includes only Skirmishmission cards corresponding to our-player skirmish maps.

    • wo additional deployment zones, yellow and green, areavailable or players to deploy figures. In step 4 o SkirmishSetup, “Deploy Units,” the player who has initiative choosesone o the our available deployment zones and deploys all ohis figures in this deployment zone. Te player to his lef does

the same, choosing rom the remaining deployment zones, andso on until all players have deployed.

    • During the Activation Phase, instead o play passing backand orth between two opponents, each player in clockwiseorder activates a group.

    • During the Skirmish Status Phase, all players ready all o theirDeployment cards and the player who has the initiative tokenpasses it to the player on his lef.

GAME MODESTere are two different modes o play or our-player skirmishes:Free-For-All and eam Battle.

    FREE-FOR-ALL

When playing a Free-For-All skirmish, all other players areopponents, and all o their figures are hostile figures.

A Free-For-All skirmish ends immediately when at least one

player has gained 40 or more VPs, at which point the player withthe most VPs wins the game. Te game will also end when threeplayers have been eliminated, at which point the remainingplayer wins the game.

    TEAM BATTLE

During a eam Battle skirmish, the players on your immediatelef and right are your opponents and the remaining player is yourteammate. All figures belonging to opponents are hostile, and allfigures belonging to your teammate are riendly.

A eam Battle skirmish ends immediately when one team hascollectively gained 60 or more VPs, at which point the team with

the most VPs wins the game. Te game will also end when apair o teammates have both been eliminated, at which point theremaining team wins the game.

  • 8/17/2019 Return to Hoth Rules

    7/9 7RETURN TO HOTH

    RULEBOOK

SPECIAL RULESIn a our-player skirmish, some special rules come into effect.

    • When a card effect targets your opponent (such as “ShadowOps”), you must choose one available opponent.

    • I a player would claim the initiative token out o turn, suchas by playing “ake Initiative,” that player receives the firstactivation on that turn, but does not claim the initiative token.Afer the first activation resolves, play passes to the player with

the initiative token and then proceeds normally.

    - Te player with the initiative token cannot also use effectsthat would claim the initiative token.

     - I multiple players use effects that would claim theinitiative token, each o those players gain an activationthat they may use beore the player with initiative resolveshis first activation. Tese activations are resolved in ordero initiative.

     - A player cannot use more than one effect thatwould allow him to claim the initiative token in thesame round.

    • When the last figure in a group is deeated, theplayer who deeated that figure gains the VPs orthat figure’s group.

     - When the last figure in a group is deeated, but was not deeated by an opponent, suchas when a Probe Droid becomes deeated afer using“Sel-Destruct,” that figure’s player chooses one availableopponent to gain the VPs or that group.

    • I all o a player’s figures are deeated, that player is eliminated. He can no longer play cards, and his Skirmish Upgrade cardsno longer have any effect.

    • I more than one player includes the Skirmish Upgrade card

“Devious Scheme” in his army, then all copies o “DeviousScheme” have no effect.

CONFLICTS IN A FOUR-PLAYER SKIRMISHDuring a our-player skirmish, mission rules are resolved first, ollowed by effects rom the player with initiative, and then effectsrom each other player, proceeding clockwise around the table.

Also, when playing a team battle skirmish, conflicts that ariseduring an attack resolve slightly differently than in other missionsMission rules are resolved first, ollowed by effects rom theattacker and the attacker’s figures, then effects rom the deender

and his figures. Afer both the attacker’s and deender’s effectshave resolved, the attacker’s teammate may resolve effects, ollowed by the deender’s teammate.

  • 8/17/2019 Return to Hoth Rules

    8/98RETURN TO HOTH

    RULEBOOK

ATTRIBUTE TESTS• Many attribute tests required by mission rules require the

figure perorming the test to interact with an object (such asa mission token, terminal, or door). Tese are reerred to asattribute tests on objects.

    • Some missions allow any Rebel figure to perorm attributetests on objects, instead o only heroes. I this occurs, alliescan interact to perorm those tests in the same way a hero

would. Elite figures automatically receive 1 success when theyperorm attribute tests. Regular figures automatically ail tests.

CLOSE QUARTERSVerena alos’s “Close Quarters” ability allows her to perormattacks using an opponent’s attack type and attack pool.

    • When using this ability, Verena does not gain access to surgeabilities on the targeted figure’s Deployment card, nor does shegain access to that figure’s abilities (such as the Probe Droid’s“argeting Computer” ability).

    • When “Close Quarters” is used in relation to a figure withouta specific dice pool, such as a figure with “Arsenal” or“Epic Arsenal,” the dice pool is determined by that figure’scontrolling player by the same method as i the figure wereattacking. For example, i this occurred in relation to a figurewith “Arsenal,” the player controlling the targeted figuredetermines which two dice Verena will use during “CloseQuarters.”

CONTROLSome skirmish missions require players to control deploymentzones, in addition to tiles or tokens.

    • A player controls a deployment zone i there is at least one

riendly figure in any space o that deployment zone and nohostile figures in any space o that deployment zone.

    RULE CLARIFICATIONS AND RULES

REFERENCE ADDITIONS“You must unlearn what you have learned.”-Yoda, Te Empire Strikes Back

Tis section introduces new combinations and clarifications oexisting rules that are not included in the Rules Reerence Guidein the core game, particularly with relation to new components

    ound in Return to Hoth.

I an entry in this section has the same title as an entry in theRules Reerence Guide, treat the inormation in this section asaugmenting that entry in the Rules Reerence Guide.

As in the core game, i a rule in this section contradicts a rule inthe core game Learn to Play booklet or Skirmish Guide, the rulein this section takes priority.

Additionally, i a rule in this section should contradict a ruleound the core game’s Rules Reerence Guide, the rule in thissection takes priority.

ATTACKS• Some abilities allow a figure to perorm an attack with a

different attack type and attack pool than its normal attack.

     - When a hero perorms an attack using an attack poolunrelated to his weapons (such as “Close Quarters” onVerena alos’s Hero Sheet), he cannot use any abilities romhis weapons during that attack.

     - When a figure corresponding to a Deployment cardperorms an attack using an alternate attack pool (suchas “Close Quarters” on Verena alos’s Deployment card),it may still trigger its surge abilities, unless the abilitytriggering the attack states otherwise.
