Hi To All,

In 2014 we celebrate 50 years of retrieving in South Australia, our Jubilee Year. As well

we are holding the National Trial so this is going to be our big year. It’s great to see everybody working together on the Committees and I think it’s going to

be a very exciting year as many functions and events are organised. In this issue you will see all of our Schedules for the year for RAFTCOSA. Our last trial at

Grand Cru will be a lead up trial to the State and National. A dinner is organised at Grand Cru on the Saturday night where we will draw the running order for the State Championship. We expect this to be a big trial as many triallers are coming for the State

and National and will come to this one as well. I have organised with our official Photographer to come to this trial. He will take some photographs of the Novice and

Restricted dogs which will be able to be viewed at a Cocktail Night on the 26th August, 2014 at his Gallery in Waikerie. His name is Paul White and you can view his work at

www.paulwhitephotos.com.au. The RAFTCOSA Committee have been busy holding some training days. We are holding

one on the 5th April at Prospect Hill, see the flyer in this issue. If you can, come to this as training your retriever is a big issue.

It is disappointing to see that we are putting so much work into the National and so few dogs will be running from South Australia. So we need to get new people into our Sport,

true, but we also need to get better and more committed at training our dogs to compete better against the interstate dogs. The next National will probably be held in South

Australia in 2020. I believe we could have six to eight triallers compete at that National. This all hinges on our training methods and commitment, so herein lies the challenge. Do we want to compete professionally against the interstate dogs, if so, we need to discuss

this issue further and be more open to learning training techniques.

Here's to the future!!

Kind regards, Michael Mason.

It has been a pretty busy year already. I missed out on our beach day due to work. That was our first attempt at getting people together during the summer, so we hoped to

dodge the worst of the heat and introduce some young dogs to retrieving from water. Beaches work really well for dogs that are prone to dropping their dummy on exit from the water, as the handler can stand in the water and collect without it being dropped.

Incremental improvements are so hard to come by!

Our recent training at the new storm water collection ponds/dams on Byards Road, East Reynella was a hoot. I was so busy I never got to take a photo, but I can tell you we were all impressed by the grounds and opportunity to do interesting work. Penny won’t

mind me sharing our groups delight in watching her young Goldy hitting the water hard for the first time! Now we only have to teach her how to swim!

We are blessed by these new dams but will continue to need more areas for training, and training teams to bring these dogs on. So let’s get active!

New members are starting to get bitten. Please see if you have a training buddy or two

to work with. Judging upgrades are on the cards again. I’ve stuck my hand up for All Age. I’m certainly

learning more about dog handling as a judge! A recent appointment with the Victorian Gundog Club at Serpentine north of Bendigo was very interesting. Novice one day

followed by Restricted the next had me working hard. Fortunately the grounds were very interesting and it was most interesting to assess new dogs and handlers – more learning.

I shan’t pass up the chance to mention the Grand Cru, State & National combination coming your way in August. The National Committee will be looking for extra helpers as

we approach August. Please enjoy your trialling this winter and look to your friends in and outside trialling to see how we can make this rare event hum for our home state.

With more new handlers and young dogs to be expected on trial grounds this year, spend a moment to help out these new people. Experienced handlers can make the sport seem

a bit mystifying on first outings. Once they are bitten by the bug they’ll be with us for good.

Happy retrieving – John Nairn

If you are looking for some light entertainment at the expense of a hapless GSP I am willing to share this giggle:

Remember: You may have other interesting photos that you’d like to see kept on our web site. Within reason I should be able to build a limited gallery. Email to me or Philippa.

Your Duck is Dead!!

A good story! For anybody who's had some tests at the doctor's office….

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet. "How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck." The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!" The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $150." You know the drill... if you're smiling, you must pass it on, give someone else a smile too!
