Warm-up 08/16 topic: Water in peril

Warm-up 08/16 topic: Water in perilList as many uses as you can for water. You have 3 minutes!!!Retrievers-Supply-Attendance-Collectors-H/W-O-managers-Water Crisis in the M.E.

What can we tell about water resources in the ME from this map?Water ScarcityWater is the most precious natural resource in the M.E.Sources, such as rivers, aquifers (Saudis get 70% of water), etc., are being rapidly depleted as population in the region soars (grows).UN predicts that by 2025, 18 countries in the M.E. and North Africa will be water scarce.Millions lack access to an adequate supply of clean, available water.Impact of water scarcity on M.E. countries???Water usage in the M.E.

Waters impact on population distribution

ImpactBrainstorm a list of potential impacts to the region and/or world due to the issue of water scarcity in the region.Solutions???Desalination

World wide- 12,500 Desalination plants produce 8 billion gallon daily; 65% in the M.E.Desalination contM.E. began utilizing desalination in circa 1938.Worlds largest- Saudi Arabia- 128 million gpd.Pros: provides fresh, clean water; reduces pressure on other sources.Cons: Energy vampires; CO2 emissions; increased ocean salinity. Think about: Should countries use technology such as desalination to prop up populations that are not supported by nature??? Implications?
