Case Study - LeannStudent Situation: In Leann’s 1st semester her brother passed away unexpectedly. Earlier on, she shared with her advisor that her brother was her main source of support so this was especially devastating for her.
Intervention:• Advisor had strong rapport with Leann and was there for her. • Advisor offered a referral to counseling services and, with the
student’s consent, completed a warm transfer to the counseling team.• Advisor & Student Support Director worked with Executive Vice Dean
& staff to determine additional supports that could be offered to the student.
• Advisor provided ongoing support via weekly phone meetings throughout the remainder of the term.
Outcome: Leann completed her first semester and elected to take a leave of absence to allow her time to cope with her grief. She remains committed to returning to the program.

Case Study - MartinStudent Situation: Martin is enrolled in the program part-time and works 30 hours per week. At the start of the term, he expressed concerns about being successful in the research course. Martin’s professor reported in week 8 that he was in danger of failing.
Intervention:• Advisor helped Martin to meet with his professor to determine his
standing in the course and a path for performance improvement. • Advisor referred Martin for peer tutoring services.• Advisor assisted Martin with locating a study group and exam
preparation sessions available in the Virtual Academic Center.Outcome: Martin accessed peer tutoring and attended several study and exam preparation sessions. He also met with his Professor and was able to resubmit one of his assignments in order to improve his grade. He successfully passed the course.

Case Study - LisaStudent Situation: Lisa, a mother of 3 young children, completed her BA 10 years ago and has not written an academic paper since. She feels overwhelmed by the volume of required reading and has fallen behind.
Intervention: • Advisor encouraged Lisa to communicate with her Professors and
role-played what that conversation might look like.• Advisor used notes about strengths and social supports to make
suggestions for possible solutions.• Advisor partnered with Lisa to create a schedule for completion of
reading and coursework.Outcome: Lisa was able to implement the plan she created with her Advisor and pass both of her classes with B grades. She is currently performing and is in her third semester at USC.

Outcomes - Satisfaction
USC & 2U use these scores systematically to identify opportunities/needs for improvement on an ongoing basis. Survey scores are compiled at the end of each semester and are used to create action plans in partnership with USC leadership. We ask their overall impression of the program, student support, placement, curriculum and technology, incorporated into a standard end of semester survey.
