it creates about the merchandise and the eect it has on

the retail areas appearance are all actors in a successul

sale. A designer must consider a variety o key character-

istics when developing lighting designs including lamp lie,

    cniuA well-illuminated store directly

    contributes to the bottom line

As customers enter the store they immediately orm an impression which inuences the duration o the

shopping experience. It sets client expectations on the quality o merchandise in your store as well as their

overall motivation to make a purchase. The environment created should be aesthetically pleasing, complimen

architecture and merchandise and ulfll primary visual requirements. The lighting should provide a seamless

transition between the entryway and the rest o the space where ambient lighting sets the mood and genera

tone o the space. Choosing the right lighting is critical or projecting the desired store image, ocusing

and attracting attention and enhancing the appeal o merchandise leading to purchase. Using inexpensive

uorescent lighting and high light levels convey cost-consciousness. Decorative lighting fxtures incorporated

with stylish embellishments, such as artisan glass shades rom our Rock Cottage Glass Collection, give a store

    a more distinct personality.

    Accent Lighting

Accent and Display Lighting reinorce design aesthetics and create a dramatic

emphasis on merchandise with a ocused light source. Accent lighting is used

to highlight shape, texture, fnish and color o merchandise so customers are

drawn to it. It is important to make illumination precise and o higher intensity

than the surrounding ambient light. The IESNA recommends a 3:1 ratio o accent

lighting to ambient light to make merchandise stand out. Point sources such as

Con-Techs Micro/LyteTM use MR16 and AR111 lamps because they are ideal or

accent lighting because they can be controlled and directed.

    Task Lighting

Task lighting is most eective when used as a supplement to a general lighting inworkspaces, counter tops, and conerence areas. Eective task lighting should

eliminate shadows on the specifc illuminated area while preventing glare

Con-Techs pendant fxtures and rail or cable systems are one o many solutions

or task lighting applications. Providing pendant luminaries at the point o sale

will provide adequate light or sales work, cash wrap and unctions as a way

    fnder or customers.

    Wall Wash Lighting

Wall Wash Lighting draws the customer into the space and builds depth. It defnes

orm and space while highlighting texture. It visually increases the size o a room

and makes the space seem lighter and more open, and by using high intensities, can

increase the perceived brightness o the space. Con-Techs Cove Lighting, such

as the CTL70DEWW and CTL14254/HO urther open the space, elevating the

ceiling and enhancing the architecture with long, shadow ree, uninterrupted

    lines o light.

    Display Lighting

Display lighting allows you to draw out the best traits o the merchandise and is

supplementary to the general diuse lighting. You help inuence the customers

impression by highlighting the products best attributes such as orm and texture

I this light is directed too obliquely, it can result in objectionable shadows.

Perimeter LightingThe goal o perimeter lighting is to draw custom-

ers rom the main aisles into merchandising space.

It creates a pleasant environment and adds to the

visibility and visual impact o the displays on the

walls. Perimeter lighting also draws attention tothe merchandise and reinorces design aesthetics.

Because vertical brightness inuences the cus-

tomers impression o the store, it is important that

vertical suraces are lit or visual comort, pleas-

antness, spaciousness and visual and directional

cues. Perimeter lighting helps defne merchandis-

ing spaces, provides vertical lighting or wall dis-

plays and makes the retail space eel larger.

    .

Window LightingThe retail window draws in potential customers.

Attract customers with drama, engaging the passerby

emotionally with intense white or colored light using

uniorm saturated illumination. It should be a powerul

attraction, providing a link between the passerby

and the merchandise within the store. Some actorsto consider when designing show window lighting

are: merchandise strategy, merchandise type and

characteristics, location o the show window, night

and day use, associated ambient luminances, open

back or enclosed confguration, size and shape,

contour and slant o the glazing, brightness rom

daytime and nighttime reections, interior surace

reectances and colors, exibility requirements, and

    size and location o graphics.

Case and CounterLightingShowcase lighting requires three to fve times the

illuminance o circulation area lighting. Dierent

lamps can be used to achieve dierent accenting

eects. Fluorescent lamps provide a continuous line

o light, whereas incandescent, miniature halogen

lamps or LED fxtures are better used to achieve

closer color rendition and sparkle in applications

like a jewelry case or to display glassware.

Rack LightingThe purpose o rack lighting is to attract customers to and allow easy evaluation o merchandise. The lighting

system that is selected should accomplish two things: ully illuminate the merchandise and accurately display

color and texture. Concealed, baed light sources can be used in large, cased wall areas and ush or surace

mounted adjustable ceiling accent lights should be used in open rack areas where the illuminance on the

clothing should be greater than the illuminance rom ambient lighting.

Dressing RoomLightingDressing room lighting is imperative because this is

where the purchase decision is made. High quality light

is needed to provide orm and texture to merchandise

and make colors appear natural and realistic. Lighting

must be complimentary to the type o merchandise

    being sold.
