JAT – A2 Resurrection Texts
Resurrection Texts
Below you will find an Old Testament text, two New Testament texts
and a Christian Affirmation of faith (Creed). Consider what
implications the texts have on belief in life after death, specifically resurrection of the body.
Ezekiel 37 - The Valley of Dry Bones
The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the
spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full
of bones. 2He led me all round them; there were very many lying in
the valley, and they were very dry. 3He said to me, ‘Mortal, can these
bones live?’ I answered, ‘O Lord GOD, you know.’4
Then he said to me,‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the
word of the LORD. 5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause
breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6I will lay sinews on you, and
will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put
breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the
LORD.’
7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied,
suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh
had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no
breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath,
prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD:
Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain,
that they may live.’ 10I prophesied as he commanded me, and the
breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast
multitude.
11 Then he said to me, ‘Mortal, these bones are the whole house of
Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are
cut off completely.” 12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says
the Lord GOD: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from
your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of
Israel. 13And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your
graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. 14I will put
my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your
own soil; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken and willact, says the LORD.’

John 20 - The Resurrection of Jesus
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary
Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been
removed from the tomb.2
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and theother disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They
have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they
have laid him.’ 3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went
towards the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other
disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to
look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in.6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He
saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on
Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a placeby itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also
went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand
the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples
returned to their homes.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent
over to look into the tomb;12
and she saw two angels in white, sittingwhere the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the
other at the feet. 13 They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’
She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know
where they have laid him.’ 14When she had said this, she turned
round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was
Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom
are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,
‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him,
and I will take him away.’ 16 Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned andsaid to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus

said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended
to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am
ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen
the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and
the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for
fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace
be with you.’ 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his
side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said
to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so Isend you.’ 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to
them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they
are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’
Jesus and Thomas
24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not
with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We
have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and
my hand in his side, I will not believe.’
26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas
was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood
among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27 Then he said to Thomas,
‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put
it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28 Thomas answered him, ‘My
Lord and my God!’
29
Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed becauseyou have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet
have come to believe.’

1 Corinthians 15 (St. Paul) The resurrection of thebody
42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is
perishable, what is raised is imperishable.43
It is sown in dishonour, itis raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44It is
sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a
physical body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, ‘The
first man, Adam, became a living being’; the last Adam became a life-
giving spirit. 46But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical,
and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of
dust; the second man is from heaven. 48As was the man of dust, so
are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are
those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of theman of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven.

JAT – A2 Resurrection Texts
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and thedead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped andglorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.Amen.
