    Resume Tips

Remember that resume writing is not an exact science Review the attached samples to see these

    suggestions applied to a resume.

Content What comes first gets read first. The first third of the page should contain the information most

closely related and critical to the position you are targeting. Know your audience specifically address the skills and abilities required for the type of job you want-

review the qualifications and requirements of the job or internship posting carefully. Use key words and language from the posting in your descriptions as some organizations use resume

scanning software to narrow down their applicants (typically large organizations). Consider using a summary of qualifications or profile at the top of your resume containing facts about

yourself that directly address the position you are targeting. Example: Five years sales experiences orXML, C++, and Java. This concentrates the most critical information at the top of the page. Think of itas your sales pitch the top reasons you are a good match for that specific position.

If you are in college to start your career or transition to a new field your education will likely be at thetop of the resume under the profile or qualifications section.

If you are transitioning to a new field or working professionally for the first time you may want tocreate a Relevant Experience Section and an Other Experience section to highlight your career goals.(Review the General Targeted Resume Example)

Relevant experience can (and should!) include related volunteer or internship work in the sameformat as other work experience even if unpaid.

Little or no relevant work experience? Create a Relevant Projects Section using upper division courseprojects to highlight skills and academic experience related to your career goals. (see resumeexamples)

Your resume needs to be packed with accomplishments dont list your job duties, outline the actionyou took, the goals you achieved, and the impact you had.

Include quantifiable results , i.e. Increased quarterly sales by 25%. Focus on results and impact of your work on your workplace. Provided consistent customer service

resulting in. If you have a higher GPA - include it for all colleges attended. Dont forget to highlight your student leadership experience either working on campus, being

involved in clubs, ASWSUV. If you completed extensive projects and work in your student leadership itmay belong in your relevant experience section.

If you are a member of professional associations or attending professional trainings related to yourcareer

All resumes should have an Education Section and Experience Section, but there are many othersections students use to highlight or organize their information in a targeted resume. Here are somecommon sections: Relevant Projects, Relevant Experience, Other Experience, ProfessionalDevelopment, Awards and Activities, Leadership, Technical Skills, Community Leadership, VolunteerExperience.

    Formatting

Be sure to include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Your job search e-mail address should be your name or a variation not a cute or funny address. Not

[email protected] or [email protected] . Brief is best. No more than one page for applicants entering a first career. Change your margins to

Narrow or .5 for more space. Avoid templates (they often waste space). If you are writing a Federal Resume please see the specific information in the examples section. Use solid bullet points to set off your accomplishments avoid using paragraphs. Begin each new bullet point with an action verb see attached list. No I on your resume. Your formatted heading and font should be the same on all written materials resume, cover letter,

and references. Select a conservative font style such as CG Omega, Tahoma, Palatino or Arial. Font size should be 10 to 12-point; your name should be 14 or 16-point font. When in doubt spell it out avoid abbreviations. Spell out numbers ten and lower (excluding dates and GPA).

Once you have a draft Have others review your resume or set it down for several hours and come back to it with fresh eyes. Use spell check but do not rely on it. It does not identify:

Grammar errors Misspelled proper names (company names, employer contact names)

Check Career Services Website www.vancouver.wsu.edu/career for upcoming Walk-In Hours and/orResume Labs so you can have your resume reviewed.

Its helpful to bring a job or internship posting to a walk-in review/resume lab related to your careergoals so we can see how you have tailored your materials and give more specific critiques.
