University of Science and Technology in Pingtung under the sponsorship of Cultural Division Taipei Economic and

Cultural Office in Houston to give seminars and lectures to develop collaborations between these three universities and

Oklahoma State University.

Visited Technical University of Madrid, Forestry Program, Madrid. Departmental meeting with the faculty members

was held and a presentation in wood composite technology was given.

November 16, 2009-January 5,2010 - JAPAN

Worked as a Visiting Professor funded by the University of Tokyo, at the Department of Biomaterial Sciences,

Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences. An experimental research project entitled “Shear strength of

Japanese wood species as function of their surface quality” was conducted with my host faculty member Dr. Satoshi

Shida. The objective of this study was to evaluate shear strength characteristics of four commonly used four Japanese

species.

November 24, 2008-January 7, 2009 - THAILAND

An undergraduate course Manufacture of Plywood, Laminated Veneer Lumber and Value-Added Wood Composites

(4-credit) was taught during visiting professor assignment funded by Department of Forest Products, Kasetsart

University.

(April 30- June 30, 2007 )- THAILAND:

An undergraduate course Laminated Veneer Lumber Technology (15) hrs was taught during visiting professor

assignment funded by Department of Forest Products, Kasetsart University.

Experimental research project entitled “Overlaying properties of fiberboard manufactured from bamboo and rice straw”

was conducted.

Also one-day workshop related value-added wood products and composites were conducted at Maejo University, Phrae

Campus in Phrae, Thailand on May 30, 2007.

(March 2-April 28, 2007) – TAIWAN

Two undergraduate courses, namely “Manufacturing and Design of Medium Density Fiberboard” and “Scientific

Writing” were taught at Department of Wood Science and Design, National Pingtung University of Science and

Technology (NPUST) in Pingtung. A brief research project about manufacturing particleboard panels from betel palm

was also conducted. Research seminars were given at NPUST, National Taiwan University, National Chung Shing

University, and National Chaiyi University during two months visiting professorship funded by Ministry of Education

of Taiwan and Office of International Affairs, NPUST.

(January 14-22, 2007 )- INDONESIA:

One week study trip was made to Bogor Agricultural University (Institute Pertanian Bogor-IPB) in Bogor, Indonesia.

Five seminars related to value-added wood composite research were presented at the Wood Products Department,

Indonesia Forestry and Forest Products Research Center, and Indonesian Institute of Sciences Research and

Development Unit for Biomaterials (LIPI). Trip was funded by Bogor Agricultural University and the United States

Indonesia Society (USINDO). Memorandum of Understanding between Bogor Agricultural University and Oklahoma

State University was signed. Also initial tests of roughness characteristics of Indonesian particleboard panels were

carried out.

(December 5, 2006 - March 2, 2007)- THAILAND:

An undergraduate course, Introduction of Wood Products (40 hrs) was taught during visiting professor assignment

funded by Department of Forest Products, Kasetsart University.

(October 1- November 30, 2006) - JAPAN:

Worked as a Visiting Professor funded by Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) at Department of

Agriculture, Wood Products Program, Shizouka University for two months.

1- Four seminars related to value-added wood composite research were presented at the Wood Products Program.

2- Presentations were given at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Forestry and Forest Products Research Center, Tsukuba,

and at two symposia held related to Wood Based Composite Technology in Tokyo.

3- Experimental research project on evaluation of surface quality of commercially manufactured particleboard and

fiberboard panels in Japan was conducted.

( July 28-September 23, 2006 )- TURKEY:

Worked as Visiting Professor funded by Turkish Scientific and Research Council (TUBITAK) at Department of Forest

Products Engineering, Karadeniz Technical University, Trabzon.

1- Six seminars related various aspects of wood products research were presented.

Keynote presentation entitled “Fundamentals of Timber Drying” was delivered at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Drying

Conference at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok. Research project entitled “Surface roughness of Wood

Composites Manufactured in Thailand” was completed at Kasetsart University, Bangkok.

December 30, 2002 - January 10, 2003 - THAILAND

A research project related surface characteristics of Thai particleboard and fiberboard panels was initiated and

preliminary experiments were carried out with cooperation of Royal Forest Department and Kasetsart University.

September 2, 2002 – JAPAN

A seminar related to value-added wood composite technology was given at Wood Research Institute, University of

Kyoto, Uji.

July 12 - August 12, 2002 – MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE, TAIWAN, AND CHINA

An invited paper was presented at the second World Engineering Congress in Sarawak, Malaysia. University Putra

Malaysia and Forest Research Institute Malaysia were visited for “Study Abroad Program”. Memorandum of

Understanding between Oklahoma State University and National Pingtung University of Science and Technology

(NPUST) in Taiwan was signed. Presentations were given at University Malaysia Sarawak, and National Park

Department of Singapore. Various wood products manufactures located in Southern China were also visited.

February 22- March 2, 2002 – SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA

Meetings were held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and the National University of Singapore in the area of

utilization of waste material in wood composite manufacture. Seminars related to Wood Composite Technology were

given at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Kuala Lumpur.

September 28 – October 6, 2001 – MALAYSIA

Seminars related to Wood Composite Technology were given at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Memorandum of

Understanding between UPM and Oklahoma State University was signed.

May 21 – May 25, 2001- THAILAND

Lectures on physical properties of wood and lumber manufacturing were given at the Royal Forestry Department in

Bangkok. Memorandum of Understanding between Oklahoma State University and Kasetsart University was initiated.

Worked as a consultant for United Nations - Transfer of Knowledge through Expatriate Nationals (TOKTEN) at the

Department of Forest Products Engineering, University of Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey.

Some of the activities carried out during one month assignment:

1-Four seminars entitled : “Research and development in wood composites” , “Forestry and forest products

education in Malaysia”, “Forestry and forest products industry in the USA”, “On the surface roughness

measurement of wood composites” were presented at the Department of Forest Products Engineering.

2-Advisory meetings with faculty and research associates of the Department of Forest Products Engineering were

held on daily basis.

3-A research project entitled “Surface roughness of MDF as function of specie effect” was carried out.

4-A general discussion on wood composite manufacturing and products development was held with the technical

staff of Yongapan Fiberboard Plant in Gebze, Istanbul.

January 16 - January 24 , 1999 - THAILAND

Department of Forest Products, Kasetsart University and Royal Forest Department in Bangkok were visited. Several

discussion sessions related to future research cooperation were held with the faculty members and officers of these

institutions during the brief visit.

November 23-December 6, 1998 - MALAYSIA

Sixty hours course entitled “Work Materials II, Wood Technology” was taught at Samling Institute of Technology and

Research in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. Several discussion sessions were held with technical staff members of Samling

Wood Products Group.

December 1997-June 1998 - MALAYSIA

Worked as a consultant for Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities Inc. (MUCIA) in

Malaysia. This assignment was continuation of the previous project worked between December 1995 and

December 1996.

Some of the activities carried out during six months :

1- A report was prepared to develop laboratories at Wood Technology Program within the Department of Civil

Engineering at Institute Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn .

2- Two class notes in the area of Wood Products were developed.

3- Two master students under above program were supervised.

4- Wood-Composite Laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering was developed.

5- A poster entitled “Wood-Based Technology Program at Institute Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn’ was presented

at the Second International Timber Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

6- A research projects entitled “Surface Roughness Evaluation of MDF manufactured in Malaysia” was completed.

June 2 - June 18, 1997 - SWEDEN

Lulea University, Skelleftea Campus, Department of Forestry was visited as invited scientist. Research cooperation in

the area of wood composites between Michigan State University and Lulea University was discussed with Dr. Henrik

Lindberg. A brief research project to determine surface roughness of solid wood and wood composites by using

Scanning Electron Microscope and a stylus type equipment was started. Various seminars were given at Skelleftea

Campus and Swedish National Wood Research Institute (TRATEK) in Stockholm.

May 1 - May 10, 1997 - MEXICO

An invited presentation was given at the Second Annual International Conference for the protection of aquifers.

Universidad Autonama de Queretaro. Current status of Mexican Wood Composite Industry was discussed with

Dr. David Zavala of National Wood Research Institute in Mexico City.

December 1995- December 1996 - MALAYSIA

Worked as a consultant for Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities Inc. (MUCIA) in

Malaysia. This project was funded by World Bank and involved with developing a new polytechnic in Johor, Malaysia.

Following activities were carried out during one year assignment:

1- Taught two courses: a) Wood mechanics and machining of wood products (4 credits)

b) Finishing, preservation, and drying of wood (4 credits)

2- Conducting two senior student projects in the area of wood composites and wood preservation. Both research

projects were conducted in collaboration with Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM).

3- A new curriculum and wood technology laboratory for Wood-Based Program of the Civil Engineering

Department at the Institute Technology Tun Hussein Onn were developed and a 30-page report was submitted

to MUCIA office to be given to the Ministry of Education of Malaysia.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AND CONSULTING ACTIVITIES

During two MUCIA assignments for 1.5-year consultant’s salary and overhead expenses were compensated by Purdue

University. A faculty member from Wood-Based program at Shah Alam Polytechnics, Malaysia was sent to

Department of Forestry to be advised to develop a curriculum of newly established program. Advisor’s 19 day salary

and overhead expenses were compensated by Purdue University. Various laboratory experiments and tests related to

wood composites were carried out in 1996 and 1998 contributing to the Department approximately $4,500.
