MODELING AND CONTROL OF PIEZO ACTUATED STRUCTURES WITH
UNCERTAINTIES USING INTERVAL ARITHMETIC APPROACH
Abstract
The development in piezoelectric materials has accelerated the research in the field of smart
structures. A smart structure can be defined as the structure that can sense external disturbance and
respond to that with active control in real time to maintain the mission requirements. Smart
structures consist of highly distributed active devices which are primarily sensors and actuators
either embedded or attached to an existing passive structure with integrated processing networks.
The active vibration control of smart structures that inherently have flexibility becomes more
important when the designers attempt to push with the state of the art, faster and lighter structures for
space applications. Generally, two steps are necessary for the control of flexible smart structures.
First a precise mathematical model, which is capable of handling the electromechanical coupling
effects, must be developed. Second, a robust controller that successfully incorporates the possible
modeling uncertainties must be designed. Uncertainties arise mainly due to mismatches and
inaccuracies in physical and geometrical parameters, such as loading, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s
ratio, length, etc. The uncertainty may be specified in a number of ways, such as probabilistic,
convex or fuzzy descriptions. If the statistics properties of uncertain parameters are known it will be
an effective method to model system uncertainty. Unfortunately, the sufficient prior knowledge
about the uncertain structural parameters is often absent or wrongly assumed; thus, the probabilistic
results may be invalid. In practice, only the bounds on their amplitude are often known. Therefore in
recent years non- probabilistic approaches such as convex models and interval analysis methods are
developed to deal with the bounded uncertainties.
In this thesis, the problem of modeling, output feedback control design and the experimental
implementation for the vibration control of smart cantilever beam with parameter uncertainties
represented in interval form is addressed. The interval model of the system is obtained by
introducing variation in the parameter of the identified model. The output feedback controller design
for the interval model is carried out through simultaneous output feedback controller design
methodology by considering lower, nominal and upper bound models. The controllers designed are
periodic output feedback and fast output sampling feedback and are experimentally evaluated for
their performance in suppressing the first vibration mode.
Smart structure models are in general higher order systems and the cost and complexity
involved in controller design is high. Today, there exist a variety concepts and techniques which
have a common goal of reducing the dimension of the model of large scale system in order to
simplify the design of control and estimation schemes. The singular perturbation theory provides a
powerful tool for model order reduction and separation of time scales. A method is proposed to
design a periodic output feedback and fast output sampling feedback control for the interval model
using two-time scale approach. The performance of the controllers is evaluated by considering the
fourth order interval model.
Uncertain plants are represented by proper transfer functions with coefficients belonging to
real intervals and the robust pole assignment problem is formulated as the problem of robustly assign
poles in a region determined by the roots of the interval characteristic polynomials. A state feedback
controller to suppress the first vibration mode of a smart cantilever beam is designed using interval
polynomial and simplex method. The performance of the controller is evaluated through simulation.
Title of Masters Dissertation
An Artificial Intelligence Based Software for Workspace Analysis of Robot with
Gripping Control of an Object.
Abstract
The growth of technology is leading mankind to an increased awareness of the need for more
intelligent system. The primary reasons for the use of intelligent and sophisticated controls are, to
increase productivity in complex engineering process, to use them in highly unknown and stochastic
environments, and to solve highly complex control engineering problems. To achieve the above, the
ultimate goal of the research discussed in this thesis is to develop an Artificial Intelligence Based
Software (AIBS) for Manipulator Rv-M2. Mainly there are two goals achieved in this research.
Firstly, this research presents a different approach to recognize the type of object in the workspace
and apply the required grip force for the given object. In this approach, two types of sensors are
used to recognize the object materials and send the feedback signals to the AIBS. The AIBS would
be able to refer to the current instruction or data in the database and apply the correct grip force for
the given object. However, the coefficient of friction is necessary in order to calculate the required
gripping force. This is achieved by using the Groover algorithm from Artificial Intelligence. These
gripping force values are entered into the database of the AIBS. The hardware component of the
object detector is designed to achieve the above goals. It receives the type of the object from the
sensors and sends the grip force values as robot commands to the Manipulator RV-M2 robot.
Secondly, this research presents another approach to the problem of time-optimal motion planning,
related to the determination of Rv-M2 robot manipulator motions that move the end-effector at
minimum time between two given positions and orientations. This is done through simulation using
Mathlab programming tool.
