RESEARCH INTERESTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Research and Development in the areas of renewable energy sources, energy conservation, thermal and solar building applications, building energy audits and building retrofitting, environmental impact of buildings, indoor environment, numerical modelling of thermal energy systems and building thermal simulations, HVAC installations, solar cooling, solar radiation and meteorological measurements, computer tool development. Leader of Group Energy Conservation in IERSD at NOA, staffed by an associate research scientist and three research assistants. Project coordinator, scientist-in-charge, task leader and participant in 36 R&D and demonstration projects financed by the European Commission, national Ministries and organizations, and the private sector. Teaching on renewable energy sources, rational use of energy, heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics.

POSITION: Project Leader for Hellenic Team, Subtask Leader �Energy� PERIOD : 1996 - 1998 OBJECTIVES: Development of a European methodology and software for the building audit of apartment buildings and technoeconomic assessment of refurbishment actions for improved energy performance and indoor environmental quality. ROLE: Task leader of Energy Subgroup; responsible to prepare the software for HVAC load calculations and routines for the assessment of energy savings from building services (hot water, HVAC equipment, solar collectors, lighting etc). Contributed in the assessment of the building electromechanical installations. Performed building and energy audits, along with short monitoring of


indoor conditions, in eight Hellenic apartment buildings. Performed pilot studies using EPIQR for the assessment of energy conservation potential in the audited Hellenic buildings. Following the completion of the project, took the initiative to develop the Hellenic version of the EPIQR software (ISBN 960-87905-9-Χ), which is available in the national market. Innovative Components and Methods POSITION: Project Leader for Hellenic Team PERIOD: 2007-2010 OBJECTIVES: The HIGH-COMBI project aims at developing high solar fraction systems by an innovative combination of optimized solar heating, cooling and storage technologies. In the research phase, different configurations will be examined and optimized by detailed simulations. Demonstration plants will be constructed, using different combination of technologies, components and control strategies. All demo plants will achieve high solar fractions values with a sound economy; for some of the plants more than 70% of coverage for the space heating, domestic hot water and cooling loads is expected to be reached. Innovative techniques, components and/or configurations will be examined (e.g. new storages, use of rejected heat during cooling, combined


heating and cooling control etc.) Demonstration plants� monitoring data of about 15 months will be analysed, the simulation and design tools validated and the plants� performance evaluated. Market analyses will be carried out in order to estimate the potential penetration of these systems in the European heating and cooling market. The sectors of implementation are all medium and large building end-users having heating and cooling loads along the year.
