Leadership“Everyone experiences it, or the lack of it, in their
daily lives. Those called to lead can find doing so a daunting task. Those expected to follow can experience frustration when their leader is unable to lead and their organization seem to be going nowhere. …Countless discouraged leaders would probably quit their jobs today, but they need their income. …Discouraged Christian leaders carry the added, …burden that they are failing not only their people but their Lord” (Blackaby 2001: 3; Spiritual Leadership).
5
Leadership attitude
“ My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.”
Charles Kettering

Results-Based Leadership (RBL)
Effective leaders learn (Hosea 4:6)
• “Half-knowledge is worse than ignorance.” –Macaulay
• “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles by it.” –Fuller
• “Strange how much you've got to know before you know how little you know.” –Anonymous
• “To be conscious that you are ignorant is a great step to knowledge.” –Disraeli
9
Effective leaders have abundant reservoir of hope
“ It is better to light a candle of hope than curse darkness” -Mulwa 2004
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love” (1st Corinthians 13:13 NIV)
10
Effective leaders uphold/embrace collective thinking
• It takes the whole village to raise a child
• “Great minds think alike but only fools never differ” - Anonymous
• When an elderly person dies, the community library disappears
11
So today’s agenda is…
Results-Based Leadership (RBL)
– Positive Thinking Mindset (PTM)– Collective Based Approach (CBA)
12
WHAT IS RBM?
• RBM is a management approach to improve service delivery at all levels
• It focuses on results and ensures a sustained effort to continuously improve effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, and accountability
13
What is a result?
• A result is a describable or measurable change that has occurred in people’s lives arising from a cause and effect relationship / process
• Result statement is always phrased in the past tense to demonstrate expected change. For instance, reduced, increased, improved and enhanced
14
15
Outputs • Products and services produced directly from the activities
Activities• Tasks personnel undertake
to transform inputs to outputs towards improved life
Inputs • Financial, human, material resources and social capital
Impacts• Widespread improvement in
society normally realized in the intermediate to long-term.

tsRESULTS BASED LOGICAL FRAMEWORK
Need/situation • A circumstance that requires a solution in now or in the future
16
The essence of Results-Based Leadership is to look beyond
activities and outputs to focus on:
actual results (i.e. Outcomes and Impacts)
Needs…
Needs1.Real
2. Derived
3. Perceived
Group exercise
Working in groups, design the following using the results ladder framework
1. Northern Conference Centre
2. Evangelism
3. Self-sustenance
18
Some key organizational ingredients to achieve results
19
1 (a) VisionKouzes and Posner (2002; Leadership Challenge ) state the
following:
• Inspire a shared Vision- Next share your vision in words that can be understood by your followers
• Enable others to act –Give them tools and methods to solve the problem.
• Model the way – when the process gets tough get your hands dirty. A boss tells others what to do, a leader shows that it can be done.
• Encourage the heart – Share the challenges and glory with your followers’ hearts.
20
NC Vision
“A vibrant Conference of UCCZ in most suburbs and surrounding communities within the Northern Conference”
21
1 (b) NC Mission
“To spiritually strengthen existing congregations, whilst establishing new Worshiping Groups, Preaching Points and Churches by spreading the Good News to all communities in the Northern Conference.”
22
Values
• Principles that guide our actions or behaviour/conduct in life
• People should walk the talk of agreed values
• Leaders should ensure that everyone understands the values
• Leaders have the responsibility to enforce institutionalization of values among the team members/followers
23
2. Peace“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you” (John
14:27 NIV)
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10
• The road to peace often passes through conflict• Peace is the most glorious fruits of the Holy Spirit• Peacemakers are blessed because this is God’s
desire

Positive Thinking Mindset
28
What is Positive Thinking?
• Feeding your brain and mind with positive thoughts about your life and that of others – i.e. it is nutritious food for your soul
• Do you know that on average, a person experiences about 50 000 to 60 000 thoughts every single day
• Obviously positive thinking means that a great majority of these (50 000 to 60 000) should be positive thoughts
29
1.A better rate of success in life (Against all Odds – on ENCA every Fri 8:45pm)
2.An increased life span3.Lower rates of depression and distress 4.Greater resistance to the common cold5.Better mental and physical well-being – also
relating to academic excellence6.Better coping skills/problem solving 7.Enhanced ability to form and maintain good
relationships (social capital)
Benefits of positive thinking for RBL

Small minds discuss people
Average minds discuss some ideas
Great minds discuss results or success!

So, what is collective leadership?
• It is leadership that embraces ideas from people; decisions are made and implement based on the majority input
• Good collective leadership ensures that individuals are not featured but the group or team (analogy of a cake)
• In the context of UCCZ, collective leadership is our congregationalism

• Instills a sense of belonging

Summary
40
Successful RBL is largely Dependent on…
Collective approach
Peaceful environment
Positive Thinking mindset
In conclusion…
41
• Leadership means solutions not problems – i.e. services or results (RBM)
• “…the son of Man [Jesus] did not come to be served, he came to serve and give his life to redeem many people” (Mark 10: 45 GNB)
• Continuous development is a way of life for RB leaders
• It takes the whole village to raise a child
• RBL (service) = God’s purpose in us!
Just a reminder to all leaders
• Desire to leave behind an ultimate contribution or legacy (write you eulogy now)
• Have strong sense of destiny
• Have the end in mind (Vision/Dream)
• RBL may actually mean challenging the status quo
