RESTON QUILTERS UNLIMITED September 2016 Hello All, The time is near for us to kick off our new quilting season! Are you as excited as I am!!!...Like a kid waiting for the first day of school…excited about seeing all my old friends and anxious to make new friends. And especially excited to hear about all the fun quilting activities, events and projects every- one did or attended over the HOT!!! summer months. Thanks to our Friday Bees and Saturday sew-ins and Summer No Frills event, many of us continue to participate in quilting activities while some just take a break due to other changes in the routine sched- ule that are just part of the summer months. Be sure to stop and thank our organizers for continuing to manage these events for those of us who are able to join in….once or on multiple occasions….it is nice to have the option available. :) And WHAT DID YOU LEARN – a new technique, spend time practicing your quilting, start a new BOM, finish some UFOs, or attend a class with techniques new to you? And did you share any part of your quilting summer with someone? We would love to hear all about these experiences for inspiration to others. We will have an exciting evening September 13 sharing all this news….and it will also be a jam packed meeting with SHOW & TELL of the “Initially Yours” summer challenge….I have heard bits and pieces of some of the amazing designs, interpretations, and adaptations of this challenge, so I can’t wait to see your results – no matter what stage of completion they are…bring your concept, your finished quilt, your pieced top, - whatever it may be…you still have until February to fully complete it for the Quilt Show. We will also have our “Meet the Quilter” presentation which I always find is insightful to get to know one of our own members willing to tell us about their quilting journey. Of course, we will spend some time talking about the business of QU and Reston QU as they are im- portant part of why we have this opportunity to get together and share our common bond of quilting and build new relationships. I will try to just cover the high points quickly and as painlessly as possibly. And if you read the newsletter you will also hear about an exciting opportunity for the Fall event… Our Programs Committee has prepared an interesting mix of presentations, workshops, quilting tech- niques and events for this coming year, so check the calendar and try to work these dates into your schedules so you can take advantage of as many of them as possible. Reston QU brings the learning to you and we hope you find something to inspire you to take start a new quilting adventure!! Hopefully my excitement is contagious and everyone will join us as often as possible this quilting season. See you all September 13 at Buzz Aldrin School!!! Judy I (of the needle)

RESTON QUILTERS UNLIMITED September 2016

Hello All, The time is near for us to kick off our new quilting season! Are you as excited as I am!!!...Like a kid

waiting for the first day of school…excited about seeing all my old friends and anxious to make new

friends. And especially excited to hear about all the fun quilting activities, events and projects every-

one did or attended over the HOT!!! summer months.

Thanks to our Friday Bees and Saturday sew-ins and Summer No Frills event, many of us continue to

participate in quilting activities while some just take a break due to other changes in the routine sched-

ule that are just part of the summer months. Be sure to stop and thank our organizers for continuing

to manage these events for those of us who are able to join in….once or on multiple occasions….it is nice

to have the option available. :)

And WHAT DID YOU LEARN – a new technique, spend time practicing your quilting, start a new BOM,

finish some UFOs, or attend a class with techniques new to you? And did you share any part of your

quilting summer with someone? We would love to hear all about these experiences for inspiration to

others.

We will have an exciting evening September 13 sharing all this news….and it will also be a jam packed

meeting with SHOW & TELL of the “Initially Yours” summer challenge….I have heard bits and pieces of

some of the amazing designs, interpretations, and adaptations of this challenge, so I can’t wait to see

your results – no matter what stage of completion they are…bring your concept, your finished quilt, your

pieced top, - whatever it may be…you still have until February to fully complete it for the Quilt Show.

We will also have our “Meet the Quilter” presentation which I always find is insightful to get to know

one of our own members willing to tell us about their quilting journey.

Of course, we will spend some time talking about the business of QU and Reston QU as they are im-

portant part of why we have this opportunity to get together and share our common bond of quilting

and build new relationships. I will try to just cover the high points quickly and as painlessly as possibly.

And if you read the newsletter you will also hear about an exciting opportunity for the Fall event…

Our Programs Committee has prepared an interesting mix of presentations, workshops, quilting tech-

niques and events for this coming year, so check the calendar and try to work these dates into your

schedules so you can take advantage of as many of them as possible. Reston QU brings the learning to

you and we hope you find something to inspire you to take start a new quilting adventure!!

Hopefully my excitement is contagious and everyone will join us as often as possible this quilting season.

See you all September 13 at Buzz Aldrin School!!!

Big QU 2016 Fall Event

QU has rescheduled the 2016 Fall Event and has budgeted $3000 to subsidize the cost of current active QU members attending the “Colorful Inspirations” lecture by Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably (sponsored by The Quilters Studio). This lecture will be held on

Saturday, October 1 NOVA-Annandale from 5:30-9 pm

You can find more information on the Quilters Studio website: http://www.quiltersstudiova.com/module/class.htm?classId=144250

Members wishing to attend must pre-register by phoning the Quilters Studio (703) 261-6366 or on their website and must pay the $35 lecture fee. Members who have already registered do not need to re-register. Following the lecture, QU will reimburse up to $20 per attendee. {The amount of the reimbursement will be determined by the number of QU members who register, keeping within the $3000 budgeted for the fall event.) Current active membership is determined by mem-bers who have paid their 2016-17 QU membership dues by September 30, 2016. QU will send a check to each chapter with the list of names of that chapter's members who attended the event. The chapter will distribute the money. Members can choose to ac-cept the reimbursement money or donate it to the chapter to support further educational programs. If anyone has questions about the event, please check with your chapter President or contact the QU President at [email protected]

FALL WORKSHOP

We are excited to offer a fall workshop with local artist and quilter

Cindy Grisdela

Class will be held on

October 8 from 10:00 to 4:00

United Christian Parish Church

11508 North Shore Drive

Reston, VA

The workshop topic is “Artful Improv: Building Blocks of Improvisational Quilting.”

Learn to create your own original quilts with no pattern and using improvisational piecing tech-niques. Students will learn to let go of the “rules” and piece blocks in an intuitive, free form fashion. We will explore contemporary versions of the log cabin, drunkard’s path, and rail fence designs, plus insets and curved strips. Use strips and scraps to add interest and make your own statement. There’s no measuring or precise cutting and each quilt will be unique.

In the morning we will cover ideas for the use of color and an introduction to the basic improvisa-tional techniques using scraps. In the afternoon, students may choose to focus on one or more of the techniques demonstrated and use their own strips and scraps to create free form blocks as the starting point for their own quilt.

Basic sewing skills and a machine in good working order necessary. Best for intermediate to ad-vanced quilters ready to take the next step to creating original designs. Supply list will be sent out this fall prior to the workshop date.

Cindy’s website has examples of her work and descriptions of her technique:

https://www.cindygrisdela.com/lecturesworkshops/

Cost of the workshop is $50. You can register by sending a check, made out to Reston QU, to Gayle Maisel at:

There’s not much time left for the Reston QU Summer

Challenge ‘Initially Yours’

What are your initials? Have you ever tried to interpret or represent them

in a quilting design?

As an interesting creative challenge, use the very personal identification of

your initials, first name only – “J”, first and last name, such as “JI” or first,

middle and last, such as “JEI” to inspire a quilt.

Maybe using the “J” I am inspired to create a quilt representing flowers that

start with the letter “J”, like jonquils, jasmine, juniper berries,….or maybe

an animal, like a jaguar, jerboa or jumping spider…did you ever Google:

animals that start with the letter ‘j’…I found 11, most of which I have never

heard of before. Or maybe it’s emotion, such as joy. Perhaps an action

represented by the initials, like Judy’s Experience in an Igloo. Knowing all

of the creativity in our group, the possibilities are endless and then

some….!!!

Similar to the “Row by Row” experience, create your own row for this de-

sign…finished size should be approximately 10x40 inches, either vertical

or horizontal, and include a label which explains the interpretation of your

Initial design. The smaller size keeps this a very doable project even with

all your summer activities. Maybe you can even use this to try a new tech-

nique or enhance a skill, such as hand piecing, applique, or hand quilting

as a take along project to the pool, beach or road trip.

At our first business meeting in September there will be a special Show &

Tell of your inspired “Initially Yours” quilt…we will also include this in next

year’s QU Challenges for the annual QU Show so even if you don’t finish

by September, you can work toward the February deadline for QU entry.

Participation is of course, optional, but highly encouraged….use the Sum-

mer Friday bees and Saturday sew-ins to share your progress or seek mo-

tivation or inspiration to get you started and keep you going…

How exciting it will be to see all the finished challenges in September.

Have fun designing and creating your unique Initially Yours quilt!!!

We've Got Your Number

Rebecca Owen and Gayle Maisel, No-Frills Retreat Chairs

Reston QU invites you to join us for our "We've Got Your Number" No-Frills Retreat at

Hyatt Place - Sterling on October 21-23. The retreat begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday,

October 21 and lasts until we sew our last seam in the evening hours of Sunday, October 23.

This is our "no frills" retreat - you can come and sew each day and go home to sleep at night, or make it a sleepover by booking a room at the hotel. The retreat costs $80 per person, which pays for the sewing room rental.

Make your reservation to attend by turning in the completed registration form, to-

gether with your payment of $80, to Rebecca Owen or Gayle Maisel at the

September 13 Reston QU meeting. Registration begins at 7:15 p.m. If you would like to attend, don't delay, as there are only 20 spots available.

Bring a brand new project or a UFO that has been languishing on the shelves...or both! The retreat is a great place to sew up a storm while chatting with your quilting friends old and new! We'll have fun, exchange ideas, try to win retreat blocks...but most importantly, we'll be sewing, sewing, sewing...with some cutting, chatting, snacking, and more thrown in!

Everyone brings snacks to share - meals will be of your own planning. There are plenty of good restaurants very close by, or you can call for delivery and never miss a stitch!

There is a small block of rooms held for us at a special rate of $85 per room, which in-cludes breakfast. (Book a room early if you would like to stay overnight - the room block has sold out in the past.)

Again, signups begin at the September 13 meeting, so don't forget your checkbook

and form. Please print your own form from the newsletter, found on Page 11.

Hope to see you at the retreat!

What happens to the questions/comments/feedback from the

Yellow cards at the meetings?

We are listening!!! Thanks to everyone who filled out a question or comment on the yellow index

cards….this is a great source of ideas, feedback and questions about RQU, quilting and what you want

to know!!!

Here are the latest meeting questions/comments:

TOPIC: Quilt Show

Question: Is there a reason why there aren’t ribbons at the show? Nearly all other shows at least have

viewer’s choice.

Answer: This is a great question. Quilters Unlimited is a non-profit educational organization. We spe-

cifically state in our bylaws that “the policy of QU is to enjoy rather than judge each other’s work”.

Therefore, there are no ribbons except for participation for the annual Quilt Show.

TOPIC: Tools, skills, training, sharing for new quilters

Questions/comments:

Tip/Comment: RQU owns an Altos Cutting system. This is available to our members thru our library.

We would love to know if any of our members have knowledge and experience with this tool and is will-

ing to offer a lesson at a meeting or in a small group demo so it can be borrowed from our library.

Please contact Carol Campanola or Judy Impellizzeri for more info.

Tip/Comment: Craftsy Block of the Month for 2012 is a free program with Amy Gibson and every

block (2 each month) is a new technique. This is a great intro for new quilters for classis and modern

styles.

Tip/Comment: Would love training input from experienced quilters on cutting, seams, colors, tools,

etc.

Tip/Comment: can we have time at each meeting to share tips & trick or fun tools!

Answer: We hear you and want to be able to help our new quilters especially because we have so many

wonderful teachers among us to help you. The business meeting is the best place to work in this request

and we will add this to our agenda, - watch for more info in the September newsletter.

TOPIC: SHOW & TELL at meetings

Tip/Comment: Have people spread Show & Tell items out at the beginning of the meeting so people

can view up close.

Answer: Another great idea – we will try to adjust our agenda to at least offer the Show & Tell before

the first break to allow folks to share and then ask questions during the break. This isn’t always going

to work depending on the agenda, but we will try to adjust as best as possible.

September "Block of the Month" ~ Clay's Choice; in RED, WHITE and BLUE ~

SEPTEMBER 13th Drawing - 12" Block (finished)

Fabric The Clay's Choice Block uses 3 different fabrics (SOLIDS OR PATTERNED)

fabric one (FLAG REDS) fabric two (FLAG BLUES) One background fabric (white)

Cutting the fabric

eight 3-1/2" squares of background fabric.

four 3-1/2" X 6-1/2" rectangles of fabric one.

One 3-1/2" by at least 15" strip of background fabric.

One 3-1/2" by at least 15" strip of fabric two.

Piecing the Block

1) Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, sew the 3-1/2" strip of background fabric to the 3-

1/2" strip of fabric. Press the seam toward the colored fabric.

2) Straighten one edge of the strips sewn together in Step 1. Next, cut the strip at 3-1/2"

intervals as show to create 3-12" X 6 1/2" rectangles. Cut a total four rectangles to make

one finished quilt Block.

3) Lightly mark a line on the diagonal of the wrong side of the eight 3-1/2" squares of the

background fabric.

4) Place on of the 3-1/2" background fabric squares on top of one of the 3-1/2" X 6-1/2"

October Block of the Month – “Fall Curves” Use the color guide marked on the template.

October 11 is the Drawing – 6 1/8" Block (unfinished) If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]

What?? You have never used a curved seam on a quilt? Me neither -- so this month, take a deep breath and make this block! It is not that difficult and like everything else, once you do one, the next one comes easier! I really suggest making two. Use this template and be sure it measures correctly to the marked 5 ½” when you print it out. I will have plenty of copies at the September 13 and 27 meetings. Use this link (or anything else you find out there in cyberspace) or check with a quilting friend for help with your block. Sewing Curved Seams
