Feast of the Holy Family (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in their home in Nazareth, are an example of what every family should be: loving, serving and trusting in God. We end the year with the celebration of the Holy Family and begin a new one with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, one of the dogmas of our faith about the Virgin Mary. She is Theotokos, “Mother of God”, because Jesus is God, as was affirmed in the First Council of Ephesus in the year 431.

A new year is a fresh new beginning. It’s a great opportunity to improve and become a better version of ourselves in all areas. These days, when the family is so attacked and threatened, let us entrust ourselves to the Holy Family and especially to the Holy Mother of God. May they protect us always. Happy New Year! At the beginning of this 2020 in which we celebrate our 60th anniversary as a parish, let us pray for peace in our hearts, families, countries, and the whole world. May Jesus, King of peace bring peace to all nations. Blessings in 2020! God bless you!

Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia (Ciclo C) Reflexión Dominical

Hoy la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Jesús, María y José, en su hogar de Nazaret, son el ejemplo de lo que toda familia debe ser: un lugar de amor, de servicio y de confianza en Dios. Terminamos el año con la celebración de la Sagrada Familia y comenzamos el próximo con la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios, uno de los dogmas de nuestra fe sobre la Virgen María. Ella es la Theotokos “Madre de Dios”, porque Jesús es Dios, como afirmó el primer concilio de Éfeso en el año 431.

Un nuevo año es un comienzo fresco, una gran oportunidad de mejorar y convertirnos en la mejor versión de nosotros mismos en todo sentido. En esta época en que la familia se encuentra atacada y amenazada, confiemos nuestras familias a la protección de la Sagrada Familia de Nazareth y especialmente a la Santa Madre de Dios. Que ellos nos protejan siempre. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Al comenzar este nuevo año en que celebramos 60 años de nuestra fundación como parroquia, oremos porque tengamos paz en nuestros corazones, en nuestras familias, en nuestros países y en todo el mundo. ¡Que Jesús, Rey de paz, traiga paz a todas las naciones! ¡Bendiciones para 2020! ¡Dios les bendiga!

The Theotokos The Blessed Virgin as Mother of God

Reflection on Mary in the early Church revolved around her role as the Mother of Jesus. As the Christian faith moved into the Greek and Roman worlds, there was the danger of losing Christ’s humanity and his becoming only a spiritual figure. Early Christian thinkers emphasized that by giving birth to Jesus Mary cooperated in repairing the damage inflicted on the human race by the sin of Adam and Eve.

Yet, some held, as did the Patriarch Nestorius, that while Mary was worthy of all praise she could not be rightfully called Theotokos, Mother of God. He believed that there were two persons in Christ, the divine and the human, and so Mary should be called Christotokos, Mother of Christ, because she was only the mother of the human person.

To deal with this heresy an ecumenical council was called. It met in Ephesus in 431 AD. This council proclaimed that Mary was indeed Theotokos, Mother of God, by the human conception of God in her womb. The bishops in Ephesus emphasized the meaning of the Incarnation. Mary is not Mother of God in terms of Christ’s divinity. But when the Word united himself to humanity by being born of Mary, the Word can be said to have been born of the flesh. Since the divine nature and human nature are united in Jesus Christ, Mary can be said to be the Mother of God.

On hearing of this victory for Mary, the people of Ephesus responded with wild rejoicing. Mary is now seen as the queen of heaven who will intercede for the needs of her children. We too acclaim her as Mother of God every time we recite the Hail Mary. Let us always have recourse to her intercession: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

La Santísima Virgen como Madre de Dios

La reflexión en torno a María en la Iglesia primitiva giró primariamente en torno a su papel como madre de Jesús. Cuando la fe cristiana penetró en el mundo griego y romano, se dio el peligro de perder de vista la humanidad de Cristo, volviéndolo solo una figura espiritual. Los teólogos de la época enfatizaron que María, al engendrar a Jesús, cooperó para reparar el daño que nos causó el pecado de Adán y Eva.

No obstante, algunos como el Patriarca Nestorio sostenían que aunque María era digna de toda alabanza no podía llamársele Theotokos, Madre de Dios. Our Charities Report / Informe de nuestras caridades Grove Outreach — Thanks to the generosity and solidarity of our parish and school community we at the Grove Outreach have been able to feed 8,332 households, serving 22,222 individuals (of those, 366 were newcomers), and we distributed 51,995 bags. Society of St. Vincent de Paul — The members of the St. Hugh Conference of St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank all who have made our work possible through donations and helping with the baskets after Mass. In 2019 we helped 687 people in our parish. Most of them are just one paycheck away from being homeless and well over 50% of our expenses are helping pay for rent. Our income for the year was $68,890 and expenses of $69,571. Los miembros de la Conferencia de San Vicente de Paul de esta parroquia agradecen a todos los que han hecho posible nuestro trabajo mediante sus donativos y con la ayuda brindada en las canastas después de la misa. Grove for Ghana — Your support made 2019 another fruitful year. Our goal of building 60 wells in the Diocese of Goaso was met, and we will now focus on taking our mission to Fr. John’s diocese of Konongo-Mampong, where there is also a great need for clean water. We held our usual three events. The main fundraiser, our dinner in October raised $17,000 net, while expenses were kept under $5,000. Our bank balance is $51,587, and we anticipate sending most of this to Konongo-Mampong early in the new year. Su apoyo hizo del 2019 otro año excepcional. Mindo Futures — Our team of physicians and volunteers for the Medical Mission went on our annual trip to Ecuador and brought medical assistance, 100% free of charge through 7,200 clinic visits and 4.25 tons of medicines and medical supplies. During our annual miracle of Mindo spring mission, we were able to distribute almost 200 school backpacks, that were filled with the school supplies, remodeled two playgrounds and offered educational workshops to over 200 students, among other things. In addition, we made two emergency trips to the Bahamas in the aftermath of hurricane Dorian, filling, transporting and directly distributing two 40-foot containers full of much-needed humanitarian aid, and giving medical attention to more than 600 people. St. Hugh Charities — Your kindness toward Mission St. Ann allowed us to distribute 70 backpacks with school supplies. St. Hugh-Steinway Concert Series — The Executive Committee reports that the 2018-2019, was a success with four concerts and a Gala in June. In addition to donating $2,500 to the St. Vincent de Paul Society from its proceeds, the Concert series contributed $5,000 towards the purchase of the new cameras that were installed in the church for the livestreaming of the Sunday Masses and concerts as well as First Communions, Confirmation and other events. De acuerdo al informe del Comité Ejecutivo, la exitosa temporada 2018-19 presentó cuatro conciertos y su Gala en junio. Además de contribuir complacida la suma de $2,500 a la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paúl, la serie contribuyó directamente con la suma de $5,000 para la compra de las cámaras que se instalaron en la iglesia para la transmisión digital en vivo de las misas del domingo y los conciertos así como Primeras Comuniones, Confirmación y otros eventos.
