CALENDAR OF EVENTS
From the Principal Expressions I would like to extend a huge expression of congratulations to the cast, crew and staff for an outstanding Expressions presentation. Congratulations to all students, the Primary teachers, Mrs Blackaby, Mr Tabe and Mr Bent for delivering us an outstanding selection of varied acts and a fine demonstration of the Arts curriculum at Cressy. The massive show of support from our school community on this night means so much to our staff and students. Thank you to all who attended, encouraged, supported and celebrated each and every act. Thinking Beyond Secondary Education at Cressy The vast majority of today's jobs require a Year 12 or higher qualification, so students are encouraged to give themselves the best chance for their future by getting their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), a school-based apprenticeship or a vocational qualification (VET Certificate). It is important that all children and their families start thinking and talking about these options. It is not too early for primary aged students to be thinking and talking about their schooling beyond Cressy.

International Year of Reading Quote
‘There is no substitute for books in the life of a child” May Ellen Chase
At our recent Expressions concert day rehearsals, it was raining. Only three years ago this would have been a major problem, as
students were forced to brave all weather conditions as they lined up outside the Gym‟s door, to await their arrival on stage. We
have been truly blessed to now have our magnificent stage, which allows all performers to enter backstage through the primary
classroom area. I will never take this luxury for granted and always remind myself of those trying past conditions. The stage, lighting
and sound really has made a professional impact on the way Cressy District High School presents itself, both to members of our
community and visitors to our school.
Being the ninth Expressions concert I have organised, it can be a struggle to envisage new acts and items that capture the audiences
attention. Luckily this year, there were more brains on board to help come up with ideas. All the Primary teachers from Prep-6 came
up with their own acts for this year‟s concert. This allowed not only a shared experience across the school, but also enabled some
different and unique performances that I would not necessarily have thought of myself. It was great to see:
Prep and 1/2 Richelme perform the mini-musical, Billy Goats Gruff (with the especially talented troll, Ethan Best; the three billy
goats, Riley Flood, Sumaya Hassan and Toby McGee; and the narrator Maryanne Gleeson-Natoli)
1/2 Green/Oliver and 3 Long/Burston shake their booties to Elmo and I Know It which featured Dyontae Barnes as the very
happy Elmo
4/5 Brophy recited the Banjo Paterson poem Waltzing Matilda (my favourite part being when Daniel Best as the swagman
shoved Jed Hodgetts as the jumbuck into his tuckerbag!)
4/5 Howlett stepped back in time to Mr Howlett‟s era to perform the Beatles classic, Octopus’ Garden (with Jacob Glover
wearing delightful octopus headgear, courtesy of Debbie Barnes)
6 Whyman sent a message about bullying with their version of the 1984 Twisted Sister classic, We’re Not Gonna Take It
All these acts, along with: the Esk Band‟s instrumental performance of Tequila, Renae Gleeson-Natoli and Angelika Brazendale on the
flute and clarinet playing The One That Got Away by Katy Perry, Edon Bernard playing guitar and singing the Cranberries song Zombie
and the Choir‟s stirring renditions of Electricity and Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines made up the first half.
The second half consisted solely of our secondary performers. Our talented students in 9/10 Drama performed a play entitled Auntie
Madge and the Bushrangers with Mel Sparks/Claire Spencer and Logan Piper/ Whitney Cross reprising their prize winning duologues
from the Launceston Competitions. Brittany Goss was a stand out as the prince in the Grade 7/8 Drama play Cinders Got Her Fingers
Burnt and the 9/10 Music class performed the two rock band songs Don’t Look Back In Anger and Rock It which featured Emily Miller in
her debut on vocals. Also, Curtis Hodgetts thrilled us with his drum solo and Jak Wilson left us breathless after his almost six minute
Cha Cha, Rumba and Jive dance routine with Madeleine Page from St Patricks. The Secondary Vocal Ensemble also did me proud with
California King Bed and Edge of Glory. Last and possibly least, the Staff Act finished the night off with a crowd pleasing duo of songs
from this year‟s teen sensations, One Direction.
Over all, it was a very entertaining night of events that was one of the smoothest Expressions yet. Next year, we hope to reach the
same high standard of this year‟s fantastic student performers.

PISA is coming to our school!
Our school has been chosen to represent Australia for the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) which is taking place between
30th July and 7th September 2012 . A random sample of 15 -year-old students will be part of a once in a lifetime opportunity to
represent Australia in education! PISA is an international assessment, occurring every three years, which measures skills in mathematics, science, reading, problem solving and financial literacy at a point when students have almost finished their compulsory schooling. PISA helps to inform policy makers involved with education on how well schools are succeeding in helping students to acquire the skills and knowledge they will need to meet challenges beyond school. Since the first PISA assessment in 2000, the survey has continued to raise interest amongst educators and policy-makers world-wide. In 2012, Australia will be one of almost 70 countries participating in PISA. More than 800 schools and over 15 000 students will represent our country in this important project. PISA is part of the National Assessment Program in Australia. Participation in these sample assessments is an obligation for government schools under the National Education Agreement between the Commonwealth and the States and Territories, and an obligation for non-government schools under Commonwealth schools funding legislation and funding agreements for 2009-2012. What will PISA mean for our school? Thirty students who are randomly selected from our school will be sampled to complete a two-hour paper-based assessment consisting of mathematics, science, financial literacy and reading questions. These students will also be asked to complete a questionnaire. After the paper-based assessment and questionnaire, a sub-sample of 20 students who participated in the paper-based assessment will also participate in a computer-based assessment of problem solving, mathematical literacy and reading literacy.
Date of Assessment: 27/8/2012 PISA School Coordinator: Julie Pike PISA IT Coordinator: Karin Weustenfeld ACER- PISA Project Information Line: 1800 280 625
Every participating school and student has an important role in showing the rest of the world what Australia can do.
ACER will provide your school and participating students with a certificate, recognising
their contribution, and students will receive results from PISA. Each student will also receive a small gift in appreciation of their participation.
Behind the Classroom Door………………... Reaction times, reactions with metals,
and milk that has gone off…
Just another day in the Lab! Welcome to the wet lab, Room 8, 9 Titmuss’ ‘home’, the epicentre for Grade 10 Science, the area for Grade 9 Mathematics and the focal point for 9/10 Applied Science! There is always something about to explode…
0.28 seconds! Whitney Cross’ reaction time
Testing Anastasia Barnes’ reaction time
9/10 Applied Science in action Mitch and Jak collecting Hydrogen gas from a reaction
Recently, it has been the super-fast reaction times of Grade 9 Mathematics students, settling once and for all the age-old gender question: who can react faster, girls or boys? Although the data needs to be crunched and the statistics scrutinised, early reports suggest that the girls have won the day! We now know that the one hundredth-of-a-second that James Magnusson lost by, is just incredible: there is no way we could react that fast!
Chemical reactions have been the focus for Grade 10 Science this term. Exploring the reactions of the Elements of the Periodic Table has meant the chance to experiment with chemicals that spontaneously combust and metals that are so dangerous that they explode in water students ceased opportunities of scaring each other with the loudest Hydrogen ‘pops’. Various challenges, like skyscraper, bridge-building or using a chemical reaction to inflate a balloon, have had everyone excited and interested.
9/10 Applied Science, apart from making some delicious Camembert cheese, (hopefully!), has been experimenting with milk. In recent weeks, we have been investigating how different ways of pasteurising milk affects its shelf life. We’ve also noticed how the effect of bacteria in milk not only makes yoghurt but spoils our food too. The only drawback has been the smell of off-milk. Hi All,
The highlight of last week was the Grade 6 Taster Day. We had students from our feeder schools visit the school farm and they
worked with the animals and in the gardens. Congratulations are given to Nick Spencer, Tiffany Forester, Olivia Saunders, Sam
Luttrell and Will Gibbons who were fantastic in leading the visitors in a range of school farm activities.
Great news this week! We have twenty-one new lambs from our twelve ewes, (eight ewes and thirteen rams) and they are all
looking in great condition. We only lost one lamb over the lambing period, thanks to Mr Nick Goss for constantly checking on
the expecting mothers.
Last week we had another highlight with our two oldest lambs making a guest appearance at the Primary Assembly. It was great
to hear them singing along with the National Anthem. For those of you who weren‟t there, it went something like this
“ Advance Australia Baa, Baa, Baa Fair”
We have also secured the „Old Top Shop‟ paddock across the road from the Cressy Pool, to run our sheep in the near future.
What’s going on at the minute?
This week Kyle Quaile, Annabelle McQueen and Amanda Cross have
been to the Longford Poultry Show where they entered three of our
Australorps Hens. We had a great day learning about showing our
poultry and talking to lots of experienced poultry show people.
Thanks to those families who brought their children along on
Saturday.
We have also finished our new aviary and we will be getting some
new birds for you to look at in the near future.
We are just preparing our paddocks for planting rape and grass in the
spring. This week Mr Andrew Wilson sprayed the paddocks so we
can seed them down in a few weeks.
Also we have some more rabbits with three pretty babies joining us
on the farm.
Farm Competition - Organised by Student Farm Leaders Jackson Blair and Sam Luttrell
Congratulations: Jacob Glover 4/5 Howlett
Well done everyone for your fantastic entries.
Last week’s answer: An Australorp chicken is black
This week’s question: How many new lambs do we have on the farm?
Place your answers in the boxes located in the foyer of the Primary School and in the Canteen.
Donations/Support of the month

Reporting News and Attendance at
Parent/Teacher/Student Discussions
This year has involved some major changes in both curriculum and reporting. The Australian
Curriculum which includes the ratings of A,B,C,D and E has been newly introduced this year. Teaching
staff have been working extremely hard to plan, implement and assess using this new curriculum.
They have explained these changes to students and encouraged them to ask questions regarding their
learning and expectations. Our newsletters have contained a number of articles explaining the new
reporting and assessment procedures.
We wish to celebrate and acknowledge the amazing attendance recently at Parent/Teacher/Student
Discussion week. Throughout the sixteen classes we had an average of 80% attendance and in one
class we had 100%! This attendance rate is certainly worth celebrating and we would like to sincerely
thank families for participating in these discussions. It truly displays the wonderful partnership
between home and school!

Singfest 2012 - Tickets for Sale
For the fourth consecutive year, the Cressy District High School Choir
will be performing at the Singfest event at the Albert Hall. This year, the
concert is being split into two nights, due to overwhelming interest from
schools who would like to perform. The Primary Choir will be performing
on Monday, October 8. There are a very limited number of tickets
available for sale at the School Office. Tickets are limited to two per choir
member and the price is $5 per ticket (all ages and circumstances are the
same very low price). They will only be for sale until Monday
September 3 at which point the unsold tickets will be returned and
distributed to schools with a greater demand. On the contrary, if there is a
demand from our school for more tickets, then we might be able to
accrue more at a later date, at the beginning of Term 3.
Please come along for a great night‟s entertainment and support our
budding young singers!

Our Students Have a Taste of Big Business!
Jackson Blair, Jesse Arnol, Sam Luttrell and Billy Flakemore took up the opportunity to listen to a leading Australian engineering group last Thursday at Alanvale College. As a multi-million dollar company who provide construction, maintenance and industrial services, representatives from Monodelphous travelled to Launceston to inspire the students with their employment and training opportunities for young people. Congratulations to the boys for representing our school so well and a big thank you to David Blair for transporting them.
As part of our Inspiring Futures program, with support from the Beacon foundation, we look forward to offering many more opportunities like this one in times to come.

Taster Day 2012
Grade 6 students from Longford, Perth, Bracknell and Cressy attended our Taster Day last Tuesday 31st July.
Approximately 50 students participated in a range of activities which enabled them to meet new people, work together in teams, enjoy a „hands on‟ experience at the school farm and tour the school and our
facilities. The Taster Day is an important part of our transition program that assists students and their
families in preparation for Grade 7 in 2013. Thank you to all the wonderful student leaders who assisted with
activities on the day. We look forward to seeing families at our Parent Information Evening next Thursday
16th August at 7pm in the Donna Ritchie Room. We also invite parents to contact the school if they have any
questions or wish to make an appointment for a school tour.
