March 20th, 2016 10:30 AM Order Of Worship

Reflect ion - Johann Sebastian Bach, St. John Passion

My precious Savior, let me ask, Now that you have been nailed to the Cross and have said yourself: It is finished, Am I made free from death? Can I, through your pain and death inherit the kingdom of heaven? Has the redemption of the whole world arrived? You cannot say a single thing out of pain; yet you bow Your head and say silently: yes.

Welcome Cal l to Worship – Psalm 118:26-29

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. The LORD is God, And he has made his light to shine upon us. You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Hymn of Praise – Rejoice The Lord Is King

Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore Rejoice, give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore. (Chorus) Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; rejoice, again I say, rejoice! The Lord Our Savior reigns, The God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains He took His seat above. (Chorus) His kingdom cannot fail, He rules over earth and heaven, The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given. (Chorus) Rejoice in glorious hope! Our Lord the Judge shall come, And take His servants up to their eternal home. (Chorus)

Prayer of Adorat ion

Hymn of Praise – Al l Glory Laud and Honor All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring! Thou art the King of Israel, thou David’s royal Son, Who in the Lord’s name comest, the King and blessed One. The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went, Our praise and prayer and anthems before thee we present; To thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise, To thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise.

Thou didst accept their praises, accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King. All glory, laud and honor, to thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.

Confession of Sin

O Lord, who on this day entered the rebellious city that later rejected you, we confess that our wills are as rebellious as Jerusalem’s, that our faith is often more show than substance, that our hearts are in need of cleansing. Have mercy on us, Son of David, King of our lives. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting you to forgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive us as your own. Amen.

Declarat ion of Pardon – Ephesians 1 :7

In King Jesus we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.

Hymn of Confession – Man Of Sorrows

Man of Sorrows! What a name for the Son of God, who came, Ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah! What a Savior! Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned he stood, Sealed my pardon with his blood: Hallelujah! What a Savior! Guilty, vile, and helpless, we; spotless Lamb of God was he; Full atonement! Can it be? Hallelujah! What a Savior! Lifted up was he to die, "It is finished!" was his cry; Now in heav'n exalted high: Hallelujah! What a Savior! When he comes, our glorious King, all his ransomed home to bring, Then anew this song we'll sing: Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Old Testament Lesson – Zechariah 9:9-12 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to

you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Glor ia Patr i

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

Palm Sunday Lesson – Luke 19:28-44

And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives— the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Children’s Lesson Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you.

At this time, parents may choose to dismiss their children, Kindergarten through 3rd grade, to the lobby for a devotional. Our teachers will gather them in the lobby and escort them to their class and they will return them to this room after the sermon.

Sermon Lesson – John 19:28-42

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn of Response – The Christ ian’s Hope Can Never Fai l

We travel through a barren land, with dangers thick on every hand; But Jesus guides us through the vale; O, The Christian’s hope can never fail. Huge sorrows meet us as we go, and devils aim to overthrow; But vile infernals can’t prevail; O, The Christian’s hope shall never fail. Sometimes we’re tempted to despair, but Jesus makes us then His care; Though numerous foes our souls assail; O, The Christian’s hope can never fail. We trust upon the sacred word, the oath and promise of the Lord; And safely through each tempest sail; O, The Christian’s hope can never fail.

Prayers of the People

Lord Jesus, thank you for doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. May we continue to reflect on your goodness and grace to us during this season of Lent. For this, O Lord, we pray. Lord, hear our prayer. Give us grace to be always willing and ready to help our brothers and sisters who are need, and to extend the blessings of your realm across our community, our nation and over all the world, to your praise and glory. For this, O Lord, we pray. Lord, hear our prayer. Our Lord, would your kingdom come in power, bringing peace, healing, righteousness, and joy. For this, O Lord, we pray. Lord, hear our prayer.

Page 7: ResPres Worship Guide 2016-03-20 (palm sunday) · PDF file... thou good and gracious King. All glory ... and helpless, we; spotless Lamb of God was he ... Lifted up was he to die,

And for what else should we pray? (Members of the congregation may add their own intercessions at this time, ending with “For this, O Lord, we pray” and all responding, “Lord, hear our prayer.”

The Lord’s Prayer

The risen Jesus is in our midst, so with Jesus we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil - for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Tithes and Offerings Celebrat ion of Communion

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right for us to give thanks and praise. God of all, as we come to your table, we are grateful that you gave your only Son to take the form of a servant and to be obedient even to death on a cross. He has done for us what we could never do for ourselves, and we eat and drink together in celebration of his salvation given freely to us.

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host, praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Words of Inst i tut ion

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Sharing of the Bread and the Cup

We invite all baptized followers of Jesus to participate in this time of Communion with our Lord Jesus and with one another. *Gluten free wafers are available. If you are not a follower of Jesus or are not prepared to share in the Lord’s Supper, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus and with his people, the church. (Baskets are provided for disposing cups.)

Prayer Concluding Communion God in heaven, you sent the king that no one expected. Help us to hope in you, walking in newness of life, and sharing in the glorious victory of your Son’s death and resurrection. Amen.

Hymn of Blessing and Sending – O Day Of Rest And Gladness

O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light, O balm of care and sadness, most beautiful, most bright, On you the high and lowly, through ages joined in tune, Sing “Holy, holy, holy” to the great God triune. On thee, at the creation, the light first had its birth. On thee, for our salvation, Christ rose from depths of earth; on thee, our Lord, victorious, the Spirit sent from heav’n, and thus on thee, most glorious, a triple light was giv’n. Thou art a port protected from storms that round us rise, a garden intersected with streams of paradise, Thou art a cooling fountain in life’s dry, dreary sand, From thee, like Pisgah’s mountain, we view our promised land. New graces ever gaining from this our day of rest, We reach the rest remaining to spirits of the blest. To Holy Ghost be praises, to Father and to Son, The church her voice up raises to thee, blest Three in One.

Benedict ion

God in heaven, you sent the king that no one expected. Help us to hope in you, walking in newness of life, and sharing in the glorious victory of your Son’s death and resurrection. Amen.

Getting to Know Resurrection

Our Church’s Hope

Jesus, God’s perfect son, came into this world to seek and save those who were broken, rebellious, guilty and dead in their sins. Through Jesus’ death on a cross, we receive forgiveness of our sins. Through Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, we receive new life. This is our hope and it is good news because this is not earned as we try harder, but received as a gift that flows out of God’s great love towards us.

Our Church’s Mission

Resurrection Presbyterian Church exists to gather people in and around the towns of Athens and Watkinsville into a worshipping community that proclaims the good news that Jesus is our only hope; and to grow together in our love for and service to God, one another, our neighbors and the world.

Our Church’s Values

Living as New Creations - The resurrection of Jesus has inaugurated a new age of hope, rescue and renewal. All those God calls are new creations in Jesus and called to live in the reality of this new age here and now as we anticipate the new creation coming in all its fullness.

Cross-Shaped Lives - Jesus took upon himself the role of a servant in his death on the cross, and he calls each of us to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him. The paradoxical promise is that if we lose our life, we will find it.

Humble Orthodoxy - We submit ourselves to God and his story as given to us in the Scriptures. We humbly seek to understand God’s story together as a means of grace and our standard for faith and obedience.

Faithful Presence - Jesus came and lived faithfully among us. We want to live faithfully as a community of believers serving one another and our city. We will show honor and respect to all people and it is our desire that all come to faith in Jesus.

Generous Hearts - God spared nothing in giving us his son, Jesus. We are to be generous towards one another as we repent, forgive and serve one another with our abilities, time, energy and money.

Our Church’s Beliefs Resurrection Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, and we hold to the historic Christian beliefs as summarized in the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Belgic Confession, the Canons of Dort, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Westminster Standards.
