Activated Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS):Summary: Initial reports of extensive damage to poultry and da iy industry.

Mssissippi had 6,000 poultry houses of which approximately 10% havebeen destroyed and 30% have been damaged. An estimated 3-5 millionbirds have been killed. There are approximately 300 dairy farms that supplied New Orleans. Fuel, shipping and processing complications are major hmdrances to businesscontinuity.

Mississippi:The ERT-A representative for ESF 11(APHIS) is operating in Statkville,MS.Two additional USDA personnel were requested for response toagncultud and animal issues in MS. Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)

Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) IFuel ration priority needs for FSIS inspectors so slaughter/processingplants can continue. This has a tremendous backlash onto the producersand may bc a critical need for the industries. Two FSIS regulated facilities in MS will have power soon. However thereis no potable watcr supply to operate once power is restored:Regulated industry is not requesting any generators for FSIS regulatedactivities at this time but anticipate that need for heating and cooling ofchick hatcheries. One FSIS regulated LA slaughter facility has come back on-line.ElevenMS FSIS regulated facilities are staffed to run for a few days, oneis staffed but not running, and four are down.Availability of gas for mission critical functions continues to bc a problemfor FSIS personnel. Two FSIS Investigators credentialed by MS governor and healthdepartment and were deployed to Mississippi to perform statutory dutiesrelated to control and disposal of adulterated products destined for exportor transportation in commerce and assessment and of FSIS regulatedfacilities.
