But to achieve this we must understand the whole
process and the issues in the process...
Supply chain
Support our suppliers to reduce waste and improve disposal. Collaborations:
Customer
Encourage our customers to reduce their (food and packaging) waste and to reuse and recycle.
Target: 5. Communication policy by 2013
Packaging & Waste Management
Our operations
Minimize waste in our operations and improve disposal methods Waste reduction
- Food waste - Other operational waste
Targets: 1. New food waste metric by 2012 2. Disposal: Zero landfill by 2020 3. Packaging guidelines by 2012 4. Shopping bags

4R packaging guidelines Ahold – The Responsible Retailer
Vision: Minimize the environmental impact of Ahold’s own brand packaging throughout its whole lifecycle, without harming the protective function of the packaging.
Document progress
Review updated and new packaging against the 4R packaging guidelines
1. REDUCE Reduce the amount of packaging in weight and volume
3. RECYCLE • Use recycled content • Increase recyclability
4. RENEW Use renewable and certified materials
2. REUSE Develop reusable packaging where possible
Use materials that are easy to recycle.
When recycled content is not feasible, use material with the smallest environmental impact (e.g. biobased material from renewable sources and/or biodegradable material).
Use single-material solutions for packaging or ensure that materials are easy to separate.
Place a recycling/disposal logo on the packaging.
The new packaging should have less weight and volume than (A) the previous version (for redesign) or (B) the benchmark (for new products), unless this would harm the protective function, food safety or quality.
Avoid the use of PVC and other hazardous materials in packaging.
Develop packaging which is refillable, reclosable or has an additional function (e.g. drinking glass), to encourage the customer to reuse.
Use as much recycled content as possible.
Use certified materials (e.g. FSC or PEFC for paper packaging).
Use environment friendly inks & varnishes.
4R packaging guidelines: Highest priority
High priority
Reduce food waste by improving packaging (e.g. longer shelf life, adjust portion size, quality sensors, avoid design that causes leftovers in pack).
N.B. 1. This guideline is focused on consumer packaging, but can also be applied for group and transport packaging (e.g. reusable/multiple-use crates and pallets). 2. Packaging changes should be aligned with Simplicity and the accompanying projects (FIX, Design to Value) 3. Always consider the whole lifecycle of the product and its packaging (from raw material to disposal). The best solution depends on this context.
Prevent litter, taking this into account during development of packaging
Freke van Nimwegen January 2013 - Version 3
Creating synergy with other pillars
Pleasure/sustainability Waste vs taste
Plastic wrapper removed from tea
packages: saving 700.000 m2 of
plastic wrapper annually.
New packaging for vegetables: 75% less plastics and waste reduction in value chain and stores.
Consumer Goods Forum – Pulp and Paper achieve zero net deforestation by 2020
1. Develop sourcing policies that avoid
controversial sources of pulp ……
2. Verify supply from high priority countries….
3. Disclose company policies …to avoid..
