Responsible Decision Making

Example: We have a problem. Today we were supposed to have time to go to recess but we haven’t finished our projects. I feel really sad that we might miss recess today. I have a decision to make. Here are my choices. We could miss all of recess today or we could miss half of recess today and half of recess tomorrow. I think if everyone works really hard before we go to lunch, I will decide to go to half of recess today and half of recess tomorrow so that we can finish our work.

Responsible Decision Making

Create situations where the children have to set, negotiate and follow the rules.

Play games frequently. Games provide opportunities for children to learn that different rules apply to different situations.

Create visual rubrics that allow children to evaluate their own participation and products.

Teach children strategies for self-regulating and self-monitoring behaviors.

Responsible Decision Making

Use a job chart to assign children to classroom duties. Provide encouragement and praise for taking responsibility for tasks.

Take time for children to show their products and tell others about the choices they have made.

Always follow up with students who have worked together to solve social problems. Find out how they feel about their solutions.

Reinforce responsible decision making. Help children reflect upon and evaluate their choices.
