Cardio-Respiratory Endurance
The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the muscles during long periods of physical activity.
-
Cardio-Respiratory Endurance
• Cardio = Heart
• Respiratory = Lungs
• Endurance = Long Time
-
The body is much like a car…
• The engine of a car gives it power to move.
• The heart is the body’s engine, giving a person the power to move. • The heart is the muscle that pumps blood to all the other
muscles and organs.
• Blood delivers the oxygen to the muscles, which then uses the oxygen to produce energy.• Oxygen is like the gas for our body, we need it to move.
• Oxygen is in the air and we breathe it into our lungs, then into our heart and blood.
-
How and Why?
• How does the heart get stronger?• The heart gets stronger the same way other muscles do, by
working and challenging it with the right kind of activity!
• Why do we need to exercise our heart?• Live longer
• Stay healthy
• Have energy to do the things we want to do
• Keeping the heart and lungs in good shape means not being out of breath as often or getting tired as quickly
-
Heart Health
• Activities that make the heart beat faster for long period of time will strengthen it.
• Heart Rate = the number of times the heart beats in one minute.
• The stronger the heart, the fewer times it needs to beat in one minute.• This allows a person to play or work longer without feeling tired or
stopping
-
Intensity = how hard you work, exercise, or play
• We make our heart and lungs stronger by performing at higher intensity levels during activities.
• The intensity levels that individuals can perform at may be different depending on their overall level of fitness.

Standing in place/Sitting Slow Walk Fast Walk/ Slow Jog
Medium Run/ Jog Fast Sprint
-
• To strengthen your heart and lungs and maintain general health we need to get at least…• 60 minutes of Level 3 and 4 Intensity exercise every day.
• This can be 60 minutes of continuous exercise
• Or
• Adding together multiple sessions throughout the day. Sessions need to be at least 10 minutes long.

Lungs are like 2 balloons…
• When a person breathes in (inhales), the lungs fill with air and get bigger.
• When a person breathes out (exhales), the lunges get smaller.
• When doing cardio-respiratory endurance activities, you need more oxygen so you breathe harder and faster.• When the heart is strong it can pump more oxygen to the
muscles.
