A Message from Mr Foord & Ms Tinsdeall

Earlier this year we said goodbye to Mrs Holden. Mrs Holden had worked at Samuel Laycock for

over 16 years as a Teaching Assistant and had been a great support to a great many pupils. We

thank her for everything she achieved with our pupils.

This summer we have to say a fond farewell and offer huge thanks to two long-standing teachers

who are taking early retirement this year, Mr Whiteside and Ms Campbell. Mr Whiteside has

been at Samuel Laycock for 31 years! He has made an invaluable contribution to the lives of so

many pupils over that time. His excellent support and guidance and unfailing positivity have

helped to prepare so many for a successful adulthood. Mr Whiteside is the ideal example of the

Samuel Laycock staff way of showing “unconditional positive regard” to all pupils at all times! He

has supported the school in any way that he can including being Deputy Headteacher for a time

and then has relished returning to the classroom such is his enthusiasm for working directly with

our pupils. We thank him for such sterling service and such a commendable career at Samuel

Laycock.

We are also saying goodbye to Ms Campbell who is retiring after 8 years of service at our school.

Ms Campbell has supported so many pupils to grow and flourish into fine young adults. She has

taught Food Technology, PE and Personal and Social Education and, as the Safeguarding lead,

helped to protect our pupils over several years.

We will be sad to lose these two experienced staff but we are very happy to welcome no less

than 5 new teachers to school due multiple reasons including the retirements above, a teacher

leaving earlier in the year, a teacher reducing her days and the creation of 2 new classes in school

due to parental demand for places at Samuel Laycock. We have been extremely fortunate in

finding such a great team of professionals to join us in September. We are pleased to welcome

Mrs Pixton and Ms Edwards from secondary schools and Ms Cochran and Ms Johnson who are

the coming school year. We are also welcoming Ms Malpas as our new English Lead Teacher

following Mrs Hallam’s decision to move to part time.

Curriculum News Options for KS4

Animal Care

Years 9 and 10 had the opportunity to take part in a variety of lessons over two days to get a flavour of the vocational options they could take next year, one of which was ASDAN in animal care. We looked at the type of things pupils might study during an animal care course and discussed the importance of caring for a new pet; the example we used was a fish, so the pupils had the opportunity to see real fish.

This was a great time to welcome the new additions to the Samuel Laycock family. Introducing our school fish, kindly donated by Wet Pets and Reptiles in Ashton. The owner Sean was fantastic, offering lots of help and advice to ensure we keep our new school fish in the best of health. Years 9 and 10 had a look at the fish as part of the lesson and a few others pupils came down to say hello. Rest assured, the fish will be well looked after over the 6 weeks and we look forward to seeing them again in September.

New options for September for Key stage 4 will be Child Care, Music, Foodwise, Uniformed services, Sports & Fitness,

Gardening, Expressive Arts; Drama & Performing Arts or Art & Tech, Animal Care, Construction & Hair & Beauty.

This term we have been working on Intellectual, with a focus on problem solving, working out how to get a wheel chair onto a running track without getting it dirty, making dens to fit groups in, making steps into the woods so not to slip and much more. We have also introduced the new year 6 pupils to forest with some toasted marshmallows on the fire.

A number of pupils gave an amazing performance in the Royal Exchange Theatre’s Breaking Free Festival. We are extremely proud of them.

Year 6 Transition

On 3rd, 4th & 5th July, our new pupils from primary

schools joined us for 3 transition days. They made new

friends and loved the school dinners! Our current year

7 groups made leaflets about Samuel Laycock and pre-

sented them to the year 6 pupils so that they have lots

of information for when they come full time in Septem-

ber.

The girls football squad had another fantastic year. Samuel Laycock entered two teams into the ‘One City’ Football league organised by Paul Kelly; Manchester City’s Disability Football officer. Our team took part in three one day tournaments throughout the year.

We had a great time playing at Manchester City Academy’s indoor arena. Every girl improved their own performance and made new friends at the same time. At our final tournament all our girls re-ceived training tops and leggings; some even got jackets to match!

The girls were invited to attend Paul’s Monday evening football train-ing 8pm-9pm at the Academy.

June 2019.

The UKCA Schools National Championships Competition was held on Saturday 22nd June at the Velo-drome in Manchester. Lots of schools from all around the UK came and took part. Our Squad placed 1st place in the country in Disability Pom Dance and 1st place in the country for Disability Cheerleading. We were told that we had an exciting and dynamic routine full of stunts and smiles. Well done to all involved!

WE ARE PROUD OF YOU, I SAID WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!

Activity Alliance organise the event with support from the Lions Clubs International and British Athletics. After narrowly missing out to the North East team last year, North West athletes re-claimed the cup. Overall the weekend was full of action with all pupils supporting each other and the North West Squad. Every pupil showed the Samuel Laycock way demonstrating Resili-ence, Effort, Safety, Politeness, Equality, Courage and Truth. Libby Dover was the North West team Captain in recognition of her individual efforts and the team spirit demonstrated by all.

Year 7 MOSI Trip On Wednesday 12th June, as part of our enrichment curriculum, all year 7

pupils went on a trip to the Manchester Museum of Science & Industry. The

Museum is devoted to the development of science, technology and industry

with emphasis on the city's achievements in these fields. The pupils enjoyed

the exhibits and the presentations about the cotton industry, “Weavers

Wanted”, and “Rocket Talk” but had most fun in the interactive

“Experiment” science play area.

7HAL have been on an end of year school trip to

The Crocky Trail in Cheshire on Monday 8th July. It

was a lovely day full of team-building and sup-

porting one another. They also went to The

Bridgewater Hall on Tuesday 25th June to play

the penny whistle with The Halle Orchestra. It

was an amazing concert and they played the

songs they had been learning in music lessons

with over 1000 other musicians .

French Day 2019

We celebrated French Day this year

on Monday 15th July with a festival

of activities related to France.

Lessons were suspended and instead

there were workshops throughout the

day. Pupils were able to take part in

different activities such as Boules,

Café français, Lotto, La musique de

France, Southern French bread-

making, postcard-making with the

theme of Cannes, Augmented Reality

pictures of the Eiffel Tower and mak-

ing Eiffel Tower models from card,

sticks, marshmallows and fruit, plus a

Pointilism art class in the style of

Georges Seurat.

So many pupils made the day special

with a French themed dress-up of

striped t-shirts & berets, or blue,

white & red like the French Tricolor

flag. It was a fantastic day. Thank

Good luck and best wishes to all staff leaving

Samuel Laycock this year.

A message from Miss Campbell

I have had the best time at Samuel Laycock thanks to all the lovely staff (especially my super tutor team) and wonderful pupils. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of a very special school.

I will be leaving with some great memories of you all and I know that I will miss you very much. I wish you all the best, be kind to each other, have a laugh and follow the Samuel Laycock way.

I’m already looking ahead for my next adventure…following my love for travel and new experiences. I will be buying a campervan and ‘going places’.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank-you to everyone

past and present, for giving me so many fantastic memories over my time at

Samuel Laycock School.

Take care and all the very best for the future to all current pupils and col-

leagues.

Good luck to our Year 11 Leavers too!

Our class of 2019 took part in a range of activities as they completed

their final term at Samuel Laycock school.

During Leavers’ week stu-

dents were invited to attend

a number of events, run by

their tutor teams. These

included trips off site and

special events in school cul-

minating in a special celebratory leavers’ assembly at the end of the week which

parents and carers

were invited to join.

The highlight of the week was the fantastic

Prom which saw students (and staff) from

Samuel Laycock and Cromwell High School

dancing the night away at the Village Hotel

in Hyde following a fabulous meal. All the

young people were a credit to both

schools and looked amazing in their finery.
