Cook’s Log Issue No 08– 30th May
Principal’s Report Skipping is all the rage in the playground at the moment. Mrs Hutchinson has been
focusing on building the students’ skills in readiness for our Jump-Rope-for-Heart
jump-off day on the 20th June.
I was delighted to have so many families come along to our sausage sizzle and
Curriculum Information Night – ‘The James Cook Way’, last week. The teaching
staff’s presentation on just ‘How’ we teach each of the key learning areas of the
Victorian Curriculum here at James Cook Primary School dispelled a lot of ‘secret
teacher business,’ around how we deliver our very full and well-rounded
curriculum programs. The feedback from those who attended has been very
positive. Congratulations to the winners of the free special lunch tokens on the
evening.
Election day proved a profitable day for the PFA, as they
held a sausage sizzle out of our new ‘Cook’s Kitchen’
facility. It was great to have so many extra hands along
the way to cook sausages and man the counter. Many
thanks to Amy, George, Milica, Matt, Penny, Brooke,
Danielle, Kelly, Josie, Fancy, Melanie, Lucas and
Cassandra for giving of their time to ensure a successful
day. All funds raised by the PFA are set aside for new
shade installations around the school.

Assistant Principal’s Report SCHOOL DENTIST The school dental service will be at James Cook from Tuesday June 4th to Friday June 7th. If you haven’t completed a Semper Dental form please do so and return to the office as soon as possible. If you have previously completed a dental form with a black and white front cover, you will need to resubmit your application. We have had to change dental provider to ensure the best service for your child. If you are unsure, please contact the office.

Module 2 We are having a very busy term in Module 2. In Reading we are learning to read more fluently and to think about what we are reading, to ensure we understand. In Writing this term, we are learning to write narratives. We need to remember to include the characters, the setting, a problem and the solution. In Maths, we are extending our counting patterns, using the 4 processes to solve equations and learning to solve worded problems. Next week we will have the History Box incursion. This will be a great event for our students, as part of our Inquiry – ‘Then and Now’. The students will get to see and possibly try on clothes from the time of their Great Grandparents. They will also get to write with ink and a quill. If you haven’t already paid for the incursion, please do so immediately as we don’t want any student to miss out on this wonderful learning experience. This week, the Prep-Year 2 children had a visit from Peter and his beautiful dog, Willow. Peter talked to us about responsible pet ownership. He taught us how to approach an unknown dog:
1. Stop 3 large steps away. 2. Ask the Owner 3. Approach and let the dog sniff the back of our closed hand 4. Move to the side of the dog and pat its back.

Art Students in Prep have been learning about Primary Colours and Secondary Colours. They used Primary Colours to paint the centre of the flowers and then mixed the Secondary Colours to paint the petals.

This week we’ve been making all sorts of crafts and buildings! From our very own bouncy balls to our own LEGO Shopping Centre with a rollercoaster!
