Term 3 Issue 1 2021
Respect Pride Trust Perseverance
Dear Families,
Welcome back to term three. We hope that everyone had a wonderful break and enjoyed time with your fami-
lies and friends. On Thursday 15 July 2021, the Victorian Government announced new directions to help reduce
community movement and prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a result, in line with the directions issued from
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, all Victorian schools moved to a period of remote and flexible provision from Fri-
day 16 July . Once again we would like to thank and acknowledge everyone in our school community for the way
we all adapt so quickly with the return to online learning.
This week many of our families celebrated Eid (Al-Adha / Kurban Bayrami). We know that this is a special time
for all Muslim families across the world. Whilst the lockdown restrictions would have impacted families gather-
ing face to face, we hope that platforms such as FaceTime and other online meeting applications enabled you to
celebrate online with each other.
We welcome three new staff members to our school:
• Tania Zorotheos - School Psychologist
• Kersti Skinner - Teacher 5/6C
• Imam Abdelhay – Chaplain
Have a great week.

Wominjeka means welcome in Woiwurrung language, an Aboriginal language of
the Wurundjeri people from the land in which we meet at Dallas Kinder. So wel-
come to term 3! My name is Alison and I am the new Early Childhood Teacher
and Nominated Supervisor at Dallas Kindergarten and I am super excited to join
the Dallas kinder team and school community, and I look forward to getting to
know all of you!
It has been wonderful to see all the children so excited to see their friends again
and they seem very happy to be back at kinder as they have been busy exploring
the play environments and learning experiences both inside and outside. During
group times they have enjoyed sharing yarns (stories) with each other and they
have enjoyed learning new group games, and music and movement activities.
The children have shown a strong interest in playing outdoors, developing their
friendships through imaginative play and physically active play. The children
have shown to be proactive in their play, demonstrating initiative and resource-
fulness with their ideas as they confidently move around the variety of experi-
ences

The wellbeing project
During term 1 and 2 Nada, Eunice and Elham (Upfield Kinder Teacher), started
the ‘Wellbeing Project’ with the guidance of early childhood experts; Cath-
arine Hydon and Gilda Howard.
This important work will continue this term focusing on the development of
emotional literacy through activities and strategies. We will also explore the
therapeutic benefits of nature play through our commencement of school
community excursions, and we will apply a therapeutic lens to children’s play
by appropriately responding to our young learners’ emotional expressions
and socialisation during play. That is, ‘I am here; I hear you, I understand, I
care’.
We will also be guided by Hugh Van Cuylenburg’s ‘Resilience Project’ and how
it can support our Wellbeing Project. We will explore the Resilience Project’s
3 key elements; Empathy, Gratitude and Mindfulness, which are building
blocks for developing emotional resilience.
Parent / teacher meetings
I have started parent / teacher meetings with the Red Group, which will con-
tinue on a Wednesday for the next 2 weeks. I will also provide the Green
Group families with a schedule for Fridays. It is an opportunity to discuss your
child’s progress, as well as set goals for the remainder of the year. I look for-
ward to meeting you and learning more about your child. If you have not yet
selected a time and would like to, please see me
at pick up or drop off.
Mapping Our Origins
‘Children respond to diversity with respect’. This is evident when children
explore the diversity of culture, heritage, background and tradition and that
diversity presents opportunities for choices and new understandings. As an
ongoing project we will be mapping our origins on the world map, and
discover a rich diversity of culture and heritage in our community.
BOX ART: Recycle, reuse,
reduce
To support our focus and con-
versations around sustainable
practices we ask for your help!
We wish to collect recycled
household items such as small
boxes, cylinders, bottle tops
and other interesting recycled
resources that the children can
use at the collage table to cre-
ate, invent and express their
ideas, thoughts and knowledge
using three dimensional mate-
rials.

The students in foundation have been busy learning about transactional texts and dreamtime stories. They
have enjoyed working out and understanding the stories behind the dreamtime we have read. Students
have continued to build on the skill of writing independently by using their phonemic awareness to help
sound out words. In phonics activities where they are able to apply their knowledge of sound and continue
to practise other known letters.
The students have been learning about ordering and using different materials from their classroom to help
them count. The students are working with numbers from 0 – 20 matching numerals and values while
focusing on using correct numeral formation.
In inquiry the students have been investigating our new topic, ‘Things we celebrate’. Students have been
discussing what they already know about celebrations and the different types. This week we have been
focusing on birthdays and how they are celebrated differently around the world.

In writing, the students are continuing to build on their knowledge of recounts through language experiences. We have also been writing our own innovations of a class text.
In Numeracy, students have been building their knowledge of subtraction. We have been using concrete materials to solve worded problems relating to the counting down strategy.
For Inquiry, the children have started learning our new topic about ‘First People’. We have started explor-ing aspects of the Indigenous culture through stories, play and artwork. Students are enjoying learning about the history and culture of the Wurundjeri people.

In Grade Two students have been learning about noun groups. They have explored the different types of
noun groups including concrete nouns, abstract nouns, proper nouns, and common nouns through finding
them in books they have read and word sorts. Students have continued to build their understanding of in-
formation report. We have worked on identifying features of information reports including heading, subti-
tles, diagrams, and captions. Students are currently researching and taking notes to which, they will use to
write information report about Indigenous Australians.
In mathematics we are focusing on multiplication and division. Students have started using hands on mate-
rials to make groups of collections, arrays, and representations of repeated addition. We have also been
learning about telling the time. Students have focused on how to read a clock and have had opportunities
to draw and label all the features on a clock.
All Grade Two students finished term 2 unit with amazing success. They designed and created recycled and
reused products. We have now begun our inquiry into the importance of keeping the culture of the
Wurundjeri people alive. Over the term the students will further develop the capabilities of reasoning and
metacognitive thinking. Students will delve deep into what their own culture means to them and how it
compares to Indigenous Australian people. The students have already begun understanding aspects that
are important to Indigenous Australians including The Dreamtime, totems, tools, and shelters.

As a class, students have been reading and listening to a variety of texts and making connections to an event or experience from their own lives. In writing, stu-dents have been learning about biographies and autobiographies. They have started to write their
autobiographies.
In Numeracy, students have been learning about multiplication and area. Students have been measuring the area of regular shapes and using a number of strategies to solve multiplication problems.
This term’s inquiry is about how different cultural groups and traditions contribute to a harmonious society. This week students shared what they already know about different cultures and traditions and have com-pared and contrasted some similarities and differences through drawings.

In Literacy we have been focusing on evaluative questions in reading. The students have been able to apply
this skill to a range of non-fiction texts about Indigenous Australians and colonisation of Australia. In
writing, students are beginning to deconstruct biographies to understand the structure and language fea-
tures.
In numeracy, students have been exploring place value with a focus on decimals. We have been develop-
ing our knowledge and skills answering open ended question ordering and identifying different decimal val-
ues. Students have been given numeracy challenges that engage and activate their problem-solving skills
as well as spark discussion amongst peers.
Our big question this term is, ‘What makes us Australian?’. We are going to be researching a timeline of
Australian history and exploring how immigration over time has made Australia the multi-cultural society
that we live in today.
