DEAR READERS,

Thanks to all of you who helped to create this year’s foreign-language magazine with your ideas, drawings, photos, comics, illustrations and a variety of texts. Our thrill stays the same but as you can see, we have changed the cover a little bit and added a new flag. In this year’s edition you can read articles written in English, Italian and German. We invite our faithful and new readers to discover what our youngest and those older and more skilled lerners have written for you and we hope you may decide to join us in creating the next edition of ‘The Thrill of Languages’, maybe in a new foreign language with a new flag on the cover, who knows?

net neutralityWhat is Net Neutrality? It means Internet freedom, which means that we can browse anything and watch whatever we want on the Internet.

Do we need it and why? With Net Neutrality the Internet is equal for everyone. Everyone gets the same internet connection speed for the same price (most of the times). With the support of Internet freedom no sites are blocked.

How would the Internet look without it?There would be more internet traffic, users of the internet would have slower connection or no connection at all, the service would be more expensive, many sites would be blocked and it could also lead to some major company problems. Bigger companies would have better connection, meanwhile less known/smaller companies would have worse internet service!

Who is the creator of Net Neutrality? Barack Obama had an idea of creating something like this and later, the White House supported his idea of »Net Neutrality«. Later on, it was created on 26th February 2015.

What’s the current situation? It was repealed on 15th December 2017 by Ajit Pai. It was a 3-2 vote, which means that 3 people voted to repeal it. It is not known yet what will happen, because the vote has to go through the congress. If Net Neutrality is repealed it will only affect the U.S.A (for now!).

Who is Ajit Pai?He is the Chairman of the FCC. He is the first Indian man to hold the office. He and the FCC are getting sued by more than 20 state because people think that the »3-2 vote« was fake. One of the theories is that the FCC and Ajit Pai gave money to these 5 people to make the vote.

What is my opinion on Net Neutrality? If the Internet doesn’t have Internet Neutrality, there will be a big loss of audience, Net Neutrality could also be repealed in Europe. The loss of it could also lead to bigger problems like civil wars, violent protests in America and other parts of the world.

BMX, My FaVourite sPortI train BMX. BMX means bicycle motocross.

The equipment for this sport is BMX bicycle for race, helmet full face, gloves, racing shoes, protective shirt, sprint pants and jersey of my bicycle club. I am a member of the bicycle club Blackthorn from Ajdovščina. I train on the BMX track with a start gate, four lines and three bends. The track is from 350 m to 400 m long. The purpose of the race is to be very fast and maybe the first on the finish line.

At the start gate there are eight racers. Before the gate falls down, a man’s voice says: “Riders ready, watch the gate....”, and then, the gate falls down. On the track you have to pedal very fast, you jump and you do manuals with your bicycle. When you are on the bicycle you can’t sit on the saddle.

I practise three times a week, two times in Rivignano in Italy and once in Ajdovščina. I go to BMX competitions in different European countries.

I was the National Champion for 2017 season.

Number 274 is me.

interVieWFoR tHIS yEAR'S ScHool PAPER WE HAvE DEcIDED to INtERvIEW MS NAtAšA NANut Brovč, our deputy head tEAcHER. WE ADMIRE HER vERy MucH So WE WANtED to kNoW SoMEtHINg MoRE About HER.

How long have you been working at our school?

I've been working here for 26 years. I sometimes joke I would need an inventory number. First, I worked as a psychologist and now, I have been a deputy head teacher for 14 years.

Why did you choose this career? Did you always dream about it or did you consider other career options as well?

As a primary school student I wanted to become a midwife, so I applied for the secondary school of nursing. After finishing secondary school I wanted to continue my education, but I didn't want to become a doctor. I was choosing between pharmacy and psychology, but then I thought I couldn't possibly work in a closed lab, without any contact with people, so I decided for psychology. I’ve never regretted my decision.

What were the admission requirements for the faculty?I studied at the Faculty of Arts (Filozofska fakulteta) in Ljubljana. We had to pass the entrance exams in maths, biology and solve a test on logical thinking. There were 150 candidates and only 60 passed all the exams. A little more than a half finished the study.

do you maybe remember your first day at work?I can't really remember it. I started to work as a supply school psychologist. At the beginning I worked with more difficult students. I only remember the colleagues were very nice so I quickly got along with all the people here.

What does your usual day look like? What does your work involve? My day starts at 7.30. A deputy head teacher’s job is very dynamic all the time, so I am always in action. The main task of my work is to take care that classes and other school activities run smoothly and efficiently, without problems. It sounds easy, but there's a lot of work behind.I have to sort papers and documents, receive phone calls, work on the computer and of course, run from the office to classrooms or students, inform their parents, quickly organise cover lessons when teachers are absent. I often feel as some kind of a mediator between teachers, students, their parents and other workers. I usually end my day at 15.30. When my children were little, I used to finish earlier and then do some work at home, but now I prefer to finish all my tasks in school, even if it's late, so I can go

Page 10: Respect, knowledge, integRity and...supported his idea of »Net Neutrality«. Later on, it was created on 26th February 2015. What’s the current situation? It was repealed on 15th

10

home without any worry, knowing my job is done. Through all these years I've learned to separate work from my private life, so I can work intensively in school and take a rest at home.

What do you like the most and what do you dislike about your job? Most of all I like the dynamics and openness that my job requires. It matches my character. I love it despite heaps of paper work because it still involves working with people, especially children. Occasionally, they can be difficult to work with, but they always repay your kindness, something that adults don’t always do. I often wish I could spend more time with students, as their teachers do, so I could get to know them on a personal level. I strongly believe in personal approach when it comes to children. I also try hard to remember their names, and not to confuse them with their older brothers’ and sisters’. I think I've developed a special brain area for this purpose. :)Other advantages of my job definitely comprise free weekends and holidays. Some people say we work little, but that's not the truth. We have to do a lot of computer work at home, during the weekends and holidays.

What personal traits do you think are most important and helpful for being successful at your job?

I think you have to be an open-minded person, with lots of communication and organisation skills. Besides, being an optimist helps a lot. I always try to see the good in everything and stay positive and constructive. We have to believe that things will always turn out for the best.

What helps more: theoretical knowledge or experiences?Of course, theoretical knowledge is indispensable on daily basis, and particularly important is knowing social psychology. In practise, however, experiences help me more. I guess it depends on the situation.

What does success mean to you and how do you achieve it?The definition of success varies from person to person. It depends on your personal perspective and everyone measures it in their own way. The important thing is your feeling of being successful, and not to be a success in other people's eyes. So it should be based on your own expectations. In my job, each day that finishes peacefully means success. A successful day means no complications for everyone: students, parents and staff. It is a huge responsibility. I strongly believe in the importance of personal growth and I feel we’re successful when a solution acceptable for everyone has been found.

11

What are your challenges?I think our challenge is to get closer to children, to help them and collaborate with them - that is also a success.

how do you deal with difficult days? What do you do to regain enthusiasm and motivation?

Our school is very big, so naturally there are difficult days when conflicts appear, but I consider conflicts to be an opportunity to look at things from another perspective. Of course there are rainy days, but then again, all of them could be rainy if we didn’t make them sunnier. I think we should be proactive, and not just passively live our lives.

Have you got any hobbies?I'm not really a sports type, but I enjoy sports and need a lot of outdoor activities. I sometimes run or dance with my friends. We have lots of fun. I also like to create, especially to crochet.

What do you think about the Slovene school system in general? In my opinion, it gives us a very good basis. In theory, it is similar to Finland's. There are differences in practice, though, which I understand. It's hard to accomplish complex plans with such a large number of students in one class. Nevertheless, we should encourage creativity, imagination, critical thinking and curiosity in students way more . We should teach students how to form their own opinion and to set their goals.   What is your opinion about us, students?I have always enjoyed working with you. It is quite often exhausting but rewarding at the same time. I don’t think ideal students exist. I completely understand when a student does something wrong. We all have to make mistakes or play a joke sometimes.

Do you maybe remember any funny situation or event during your period of working here?

As a child I was very timid but I have convinced myself that my shyness won't be an obstacle for me. I was persistent and stubborn. Slowly, I have managed to get rid of fear of public speaking which used to be one of my major problems. I remember a day at the beginning of my career when we had a parent teacher conference. I was very nervous and I started to move my hands up and down my knees as I usually do when I'm stressed. Just a few seconds before it was my turn to address the parents I noticed I was wearing a skirt. :) I have never worn it again at similar events.

Ms Nataša NaNut Brovč, thaNk you for your tiMe. it Was a pleasure tAlkINg to you. WE WISH you All tHE bESt FoR tHE FutuRE.

Pablo Escobar was born in Colombia in 1949. His criminal carreer started with stealing tombstones from the local cemetery. Then, he would remove the names and sell them for reuse. He was also selling fake lottery tickets and cigarettes, which slowly made him popular on Medellin streets. His key to forming a gang was respect. Everyone respected him and that is why he had so much power. After he formed his gang, Pablo would rarely get his hands dirty again, instead he ordered his gang members to do the dirty work for him.

Pablo established the first smuggling routes into the United States. His cartel supplied 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States and made $60 million dollars a day and 21.9 billion per year. Because cocaine was so popular in the United States they shipped 70 to 80 tons of cocaine every month.

He sponsored a lot of soccer clubs and charity projects, which is one of the reasons of why he was so popular. But later, people found out about the truth about Pablo Escobar and after the assassination of Luis Carlos Galán, a Colombian liberal politician and journalist, the police moved against Escobar and the drug cartels. Eventually they convinced him to surrender. He agreed that he would go to prison on one condition, and that condition was that he would build his own prison, so he built it.

The prison was guarded 24/7 but Pablo could still lead his gang from inside the prison. He had everything in there: his phone, a television, football pitch, giant doll’s house, bar, Jacuzzi and waterfall. Soon after he was imprisoned, he escaped through a secret route which lead to some houses where he was later killed by the Colombian police in 1993. Many there, especially poor people that Escobar used to help, regretted his death, and over 25,000 people attended his funeral.

All in all Pablo Escobar was a powerful man but unfortunately he used that power in negative ways.

...Are school rules necessary? How many school rules do you follow? Are the rules at our school fair? And what kind of punishment works when students do something wrong? read on to find out what our 9th grade students think about school rules and the importance of education.

If you ask kids at my school what they would do without school most of them will tell you »That would be great, I would relax, play videogames, hang out with friends.« But there also are a few who say »I would be uneducated« and these are the ones who are aware of the importance of education.School is supposed to be a nice place where you hang out with friends and learn new suff. We could say that it’s based on education and social life. Our society is built on these two things, too. If people in the Stone Age hadn’t tried new things and passed them on to their kids we would still be sitting by the fire and hunt mammoths. And that’s where things go wrong. In the past kids learned by trying new things but nowadays it’s just memorizing pages which you actually forget in a few days. That’s why most kids don’t like school, it’s simply not interesting. I can see many teachers trying to give us more but they’re limited by the school system. The school system’s goal is to raise clever people, but they’re doing it by forcing 7-year-olds, who don’t even know their language well, to learn foreign languages and grading them on math problems. They don’t let kids be kids. I’m not saying our school system is bad but it has its bad points. But it’s not just the way of learning that makes children hate school, it’s also the atmosphere at school. Today’s world is full of nervousness and it affects school life, too. The corridors are full of children running, fighting and screaming and this really isn’t an environment that you feel good in.As I said, education is very important. I think none of us thought about what it would be like to attend a school in another country. We still have one of the top school systems, but you can’t compare Slovenia to Afghanistan, Tanzania or Ethiopia. Almost 60 million children around the world aren’t going to school and there’s us, Slovenian kids, complaining about how much homework we get. Many kids can’t go to school because of their gender, disabilities, poverty, child labour or other reasons. We don’t even know about those people. That’s why we should be thankful for what we have and try to improve that. We should be aware of how privileged we are to be able to go to school. Nastja Orel, 9 B

Bad behaviour appears in many different forms (vandalism, bullying, theft ...). I think the worst type is bullying, which can be verbal or physical. The more common one is verbal bullying, for example calling names, maybe discriminating, mocking or laughing at others. I think in many cases verbal bullying isn’t even noticed by anyone else than

Page 14: Respect, knowledge, integRity and...supported his idea of »Net Neutrality«. Later on, it was created on 26th February 2015. What’s the current situation? It was repealed on 15th

14

of course the victim himself/herself, and so the this person doesn’t get any help or support and just accepts that his/her everyday life is filled with sadness, shame and the feeling of being less important than others. It is often taken as not so serious, but it can cause a lot of harm to the individual that is bullied in this way.I think at our school the rules are pretty fair and they lead students to realizing their mistakes. In my opinion temporary suspension which some schools have as a punishment makes no sense, because it does not make students realize what they did wrong but just offers them a short-term vacation. The punishment that is efficient is the kind that makes you realize your mistakes and I think that might come with the feeling of shame or just by being uncomfortable while doing it. And okay, this may sound a little harsh, but just as an example: at our school the punishment that was given to a student was to help in the school kitchen during the time when the school canteen is filled with students. So I think the next time you intend to do something wrong you remember how you had to wash dirty pates in front of the whole school and you very quickly let go of the idea of breaking school rules.

Lana Vodopivec, 9 B

I’m going to write an essay about rules that we have in our school. 1. You mustn’t be late when you arrive in school. If you are, the teacher writes in her

diary that you were absent and you get unexcused absence. I agree with this rule, because late students disturb classes, teachers and other students.

2. We aren’t allowed to wear shoes in school, because it’s bad for our feet and the cleaning lady must do a lot of work.

3. Students from 6th to 9th grades must use the side entrance and aren’t allowed to enter the school through the main entrance. They can’t even use the main stairs from the ground floor to the 1st floor or the main stairs from the 2nd to the 3rd floor unless the teacher is present. Those rules probably exist so that we don’t mix with students from lower classes.

4. We aren’t allowed to leave the school area during class or breaks, because the school is responsible for us at these times.

5. We aren’t allowed to run in corridors or scream in corridors, because we might get hurt and screaming will make the school an unpleasant place. We also aren’t allowed to eat or talk loudly in the library, because the library is a place for students to relax and study.

6. We mustn’t destroy the school’s property, or if we do, we get charged for what we’ve damaged or destroyed.

7. The school rules also state that food should be eaten in a cultured and respectful way, because nowadays a lot of people are starving.

8. Each class also has three students who are selected every week in alphabetical order and have some tasks to do. They have to clean the whiteboard after every class, put the chairs up if other students fail to do so, clean the class after the students, tell the teacher who is absent in the class, bring students meals etc. If you fail to do the tasks that are given to you in this week, you have to be on duty for another week.

9. In the school area we aren’t allowed to consume alcohol, any drugs or smoke cigarettes or weed. We are also not allowed to skip classes or we get unexcused absence.

I generally agree with rules in our school and I get their point, but some are a bit crazy, like we aren’t allowed to stay a longer amount of time in the kindergarten area. Also, some students don’t adhere to the rules and they aren’t properly punished. A lot of students scream and run in the corridors, because they don’t get the punishment that they deserve. If they got their punishment, they would certainly not run and scream in the corridors anymore.

Money I don’t think money as we know it will exist in the future. Bitcoins for example are growing in popularity, although there is also a chance that they get banned.

enViRonMentWe are facing many environmental problems: global warming, lack of biotic diversity and pollution,.

plasticThere is also a huge problem with plastic since it is so popular. •  It takes a lot of time for a plastic bag to

decompose. •  Many sea animals die painfully

because of too much plastic in their stomach.

 •  And as the old proverb goes : What you give is what you get, which means that finally we eat these sea animals (and the plastic in them as well) .

global waRMing In the last 150 years the temperature has risen for 0,6°C and will probably increase for about 1,5°C - 4,5°C in the next 100 years. The cause of global warming is the greenhouse effect which occurs when there are too much greenhouse gases.

education We have to learn too much useless information which we forget after the exam, so hopefully schools in future will support creativity and imagination more than just memorizing useless facts. In fact, experts think our schools are based on industrial age values: following instructions and doing exactly what you are told.

MedicineMedicine will certainly get better because robots are much more precise than we are. Because money is getting more and more important, there are two major problems:

 •  Poor people don’t get medicine and treatment they would need, because they can’t pay for it.

 •  There are also some examples of over treatment. This is when people get treatment or medicine they don’t need just so that they would spend as much money on it as possible.

technologyProbably one of the biggest achievements in technology we have made is artificial intelligence (AI). Computers are more and more intelligent, in some cases even more than we are.

 •  The biggest progress probably was when Deep Blue defeated Garry Kasparov (they played twice and

Kasparov won the first time but the second time Deep Blue defeated him). This is not the only game computers are better than us at. They’ve also beaten us at poker , a game called ‘Go’ and some other games as well. In future they will probably replace us in jobs that demand repeating actions and no empathy (in car industry and medicine for example).

 •  As the AI is getting more and more powerful some people are afraid of it and its consequences:

 •  Many people think that it will bring too much power to certain people (people who will own it).

 •  Many people will lose their jobs. That means that people who are making a living out of low paid jobs won’t be able to get a new job as the robots will do most (if not all) repetitive jobs.

 •  Some people think they will replace us in almost everything, thus we will become useless.

The truth is that AI is getting more intelligent and more powerful than ever. We were always wondering what will follow if our technology becomes better than us in certain things. For example: when Deep Blue won against Garry Kasparov many people were saying now when the computers are better than us in chess no one will want to play it anymore. But they were wrong- people are still playing it, perhaps more than ever.

taBle tennis / PinG-PonGIt is a sport when two or four players hit a small ball with rackets. the game is placed on a solid table divided by a net. Table tennis is a sport that anyone can play. In fact, the oldest table tennis player was Dorothy de Low, who represented Australia in the world veterans table tennis championship, when she was 97 years old.

types of gaMe The most common types of table tennis are:

Singles game •  It is very easy to play. The game is played 1 on 1 player. The game starts whit

a service. The point is scored when one player fails to make a correct service or return.

 •  After making a service or a return, the ball touches anything other than the net . •  The ball passes over the player's court or beyond his end line without touching his

court and there are many other ways.

Doubles game In addition to games between individual players, pairs may also play table tennis. Singles and doubles are both played in international competitions, including the Olympic Games since 1988.

RULE NUMBER ONEYou can see a line painted along the axis of the table in the above picture. This line's only purpose is to help to explain the service rule, which is that the service must go from the square number 1 to square number 3.

RULE NUMBER TWOPlayers must hit the ball in turn. For example, if A is paired with B, X is paired with Y, A is the server and X is the receiver. The order of play shall be A→X→B→Y. The rally proceeds this way until one side fails to make a legal return and the other side scores.

gRipsTable tennis players grip their rackets in various ways, their grips can be classified into two major families of styles, penhold and shakehand.

PenholdThe penhold grip is named so because one grips the racket similarly to the way we write whit a pen. The most popular penhold style is the Chinese penhold style, involves curling the middle, ring, and fourth finger on the back of the blade. Japanese/Korean penholders often use a square-headed racket.

ShakehandThe shakehand grip is easier to learn than penhold, allowing a broader range of playing styles, both offensive and defensive.

ballThe international rules specify that the game is played with a ball having a mass of 2.7 grams and a diameter of 40 millimetres They are made of a polymer and they are white or orange. The choice of ball color is made according to the table color and its surroundings.

tableThe table is 2.74 m long, 1.525 m wide, and 76 cm high. The table or playing surface is uniformly dark coloured and matte, divided into two halves by a net at 15.25 cm in height. The ITTF approves only wooden tables or their derivates. Concrete tables with a steel net are sometimes available in outside public spaces.

RacketPlayers are equipped with a laminated wooden racket covered with rubber on one or two sides depending on the grip of the player. The ITTF uses the term "racket", and the termn "bat" is common in Britain, and "paddle" in the U.S. and Canada. The size of the blade is about 17 centimetres long and 15 centimetres wide. Various types of surfaces provide various levels of spin or speed,. By flipping the racket in play, different types of returns are possible. To help a player distinguish between the rubber used by his opposing player, one side must be red and the other side must be black. The player has the option to inspect his opponent's racket before a match to see the type of rubber used and what colour it is.

an eXCitinG liFeOnce upon a time, long, long ago, there lived a girl with a big wish. Her wish was to live in Paris when she grows up. She was just a child turning into a teenager. Her life was changing but her wish never did.And so one day, on her 18th birthday, she made a decision. She packed up her suitcases, took all her money and took a plane to Paris. There she bought a big villa with a swimming pool. She slept for a day because she was very tired from the way there. The next day she went to the Champ de Mars and on the Eiffel Tower. The view of the city was breathtaking. After that she rented a bike. She was cycling all over Paris when suddenly she fell. For a few moments she was lying unconscious. Someone called an ambulance. It turned out that her enemy hit her with a ball on purpose. She was taken to the nearest hospital. Soon she was all right but she was furious at her enemy and she killed him. Then she bought herself a dog and named him Marshmello. When she went to a prestigious restaurant, she met a boy that she really liked. They ate a pizza together and they were in love. Soon they got married. One day they decided to become singers and soon they were known all over the world. They were famous and their glory never ended. Years past and her husband died. She was very sad and she drowned herself in the big sea but she didn't die. She became a mermaid, she swam in all the seas all over the world and lived happily ever after.

Tutto è finito molto in fretta.

Molte volte andiamo a Korčula in Croazia. In primavera invece resto a casa.

Mercoledì, 11 aprile 2018, siamo andati a Udine e Bordano.

Gita sColaresCa a Milano

Dopo siamo tornati a casa.A Milano abbiamo visto tanti negozi di abiti di marca.Spero di ritornarci presto.

Gita sColaresCa a Milano

Cosa abbiamo aspettato tutto l’anno così difficilmente?
