The Importance of Regular Home Reading

Question, question, question: Stop reading at regular intervals and ask your child questions about what has been read so far and what he/she thinks may happen next in the text.

Context clues: Based on the surrounding text and what had happened previously in the story, encourage your child to guess what he/she thinks the word may be. Help from pictures: Encourage your child to take notice of the pictures as they may help him/her to identify an unknown word. Don’t cover up pictures as they read.

Memory: Persuade your child to use his/her memory to recall previous elements of the story that may give him/her the meaning of the unfamiliar word.

Coherent reading: Remind your child that what he/she has read must make sense, so look at the word he/she has used to determine whether or not the story still makes sense.

Paraphrase: Try telling your child part of the story using different words to what is written so that he/ she gains an understanding of the text for when he/she attempts to read it.

Punctuation: You may need to explain to your older child what the various punctuation marks mean so that he/she is able to pause, stop and use appropriate reading strategies at the right time. Punctuation includes the full stop (.), the comma (,), the question mark (?), the exclamation mark (!), apostrophes (’) and inverted commas (“ ”). Although rare in beginner reader books, you may need to identify the colon (:) and semi-colon (;)

What’s really important is encouraging children to develop a love of books so they are interested and keen to start reading.

BUSHFIRE RELIEF – STATE SCHOOLS RELIEF

Support is being offered to help those of our students affected by the bushfires. Families that have

been impacted during the current bushfire season can receive assistance for each student family

member to cover the cost of uniforms including school shoes, books and stationery, and other essential

school items. Support is available to all students whose families have been impacted by:

• Loss of family home - $1200

OR

• Loss of income through volunteering to fight bushfires - $500

OR

• Loss of livelihood/income caused by bushfires - $500.

If you have been impacted, please contact the office for a form or download it from our communication

app uEducateUs. Please complete the form and return it to the office.

NUDE FOOD

A huge congratulations to all children who have been bringing ‘nude food’ lunchboxes to school. We are

so proud that such a large number of children are passionate about keeping our school clean and tidy

and helping the environment.

The winners of the ‘nude food’ competition for last week were:

Jimmy Neate, Cooper Tomkins and Anna Watts.

We look forward to seeing more children bringing ‘nude food’ lunchboxes throughout the term.

CENTRAL DISTRICT SWIMMING

CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all children who competed in

the Central District Swimming Carnival on

Thursday the 20th of February at the Bairnsdale

Outdoor Pool.

All children performed extremely well and we

are very proud of their efforts. It was great to

see so many parents in attendance at the

sports to support and encourage our swimming

team.

A special thank you to all parents and teachers

who assisted with official jobs at the carnival

and to Felicity Whitby who was our team

manager on the day.

Children who placed 1st or 2nd in an event will now have the opportunity to compete at the Division

Swimming Carnival which will be held on Wednesday the 26th of February at the Bairnsdale Outdoor

Pool. The following children will represent our School and District at the next level of competition -:

At the Division Swimming Competition children are only allowed to compete in 3 individual events and

2 relays. We had 2 children who qualified in 4 individual events. Layla Chapman qualified to swim in

the 12y.o backstroke and Heidi Carter qualified to swim in the 12y.o butterfly. An outstanding effort

Layla and Heidi!

We also had a couple of children who placed third in their events which was also a fantastic effort.

We wish all our swimmers the best of luck at the Division Swimming Carnival and look forward to

hearing results after the event.

SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY AND FUN RUN/WALK

FUNDRAISER

This year we have decided to once again combine the School Cross

Country with the Fun Run/Walk Fundraiser. This event will be held on

Friday the 13th of March.

Children who are in the 5/6/7 and 8 year old age groups will run their

course between 9.00am and 10.30am and children who are in the

9/10/11 and 12 year old age groups will run their course between

11.30am and 1.30pm.

Please note – Children’s age groups are determined by the age they are turning by the end

of this year.

Children who are in the 5/6/7 and 8 year old age groups will complete a course that will incorporate

the large oval near the school car park and the football oval. Their finish line will be at the end of the

line of trees that separate the large oval from the football oval. The order of racing for the first session

will be as follows – 8y.o boys, 8y.o girls, 7y.o boys, 7y.o girls, 5/6y.o boys, 5/6y.o girls.

Children who are in the 9 and 10 year old age groups will complete a course that is approximately

2km’s in length. The finish line will be at the end of the line of trees.

Children who are in the 11 and 12 year old age groups will complete a course that is approximately

3km’s in length. The order of racing for the second session will be as follows – 12y.o boys, 12y.o girls,

11y.o boys, 11y.o girls, 10y.o boys, 10y.o girls, 9y.o boys, 9y.o girls.

The children in all grades will have the opportunity to walk and run through their courses during Phys

Ed sessions. It would also be extremely beneficial if children could do some extra running at home, or

during Fitness Fanatics on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, as training for the Cross Country/Fun

Run.

The first 6 children who cross the finish line in the 10, 11 and 12 year old age groups and the children

who place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 9 year old age group will have the opportunity to represent the School

at the Divisional Cross Country being held at Nagle College on Monday the 4th of May.

Parents are more than welcome to come and encourage and support children on the day.

COMMUNICATING THE RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS INITIATIVE

Engaging with Community

Parents and families will benefit from having an understanding that the whole-school approach to

Respectful Relationships can lead to a decrease in attitudes that allow violence to occur and that they

can play an important role in supporting the initiative and modelling respectful relationships and

gender equality. It is important to communicate that the primary prevention approach to family

violence focuses on preventing violence from occurring in the first place.
