Reading

6 Read the extracts from letters on a problem page in a teen magazine. Then, read the reply

below. Which problem is Maggie responding to?

Writing

7 Look at the other problem from Ex. 6 above and, using the plan below, write an email

giving advice.

Dear Maggie …

“… I am having problems at school. I want to be a lawyer when I leave school and my

parents and teachers tell me if I work hard I will be able to become one. There are

some students in my class who tease me and call me names like “teacher’s pet ”…….”

“… My problem is my skin. I am so embarrassed by my acne. I am seeing a skin

specialist but it is taking so long to see any improvement and I’m sure everyone is

laughing at me. My friends tell me not to worry but ……”

Para 1: expressing sympathyPara 2: your advice and expected resultsPara 3: expressing hope, closing remarks

You can use some of these expressions to help you:ignore them / the best thing you can do / don’t worry /your future / follow your dreams / good luck

Dear ................

I am sorry to hear that you feel like this. Sometimes just thinking positively can go

a long way towards helping the situation.

Trust your friends. They see the person you are and it is your character and

personality that matter. What is important is how you think and behave. Concentrate

on that and let the dermatologist concentrate on the problem. Eat a healthy diet and

get plenty of rest and fresh air. These can help in many ways, including making you

feel better about yourself. Keep smiling, because everyone looks great when they

smile and it feels good too!

I hope my advice helps.

Yours,

Maggie

5 Read the text and answer the questions.

he loggerhead, also known as the carettacaretta, is a type of sea turtle that can be seenaround the world. It is most famously found onthe Greek island of Zakynthos.

The loggerhead has got a large head. It is around onemetre long and weighs about 350 kg. Its shell is reddishbrown and its skin is yellow.

The female loggerhead lays its eggs every two yearson the beach where it was born. It lays around 100 eggswhich it covers with warm sand. After about two months, the baby turtles break out of their eggs and race to thesea.

The loggerhead is an endangered species. The mainreason its numbers are dropping is that tourists damage

the soft sandybeaches where itlays its eggs. Beachumbrellas placed in thesand can destroy eggs, and litter and sandcastles left bytourists can stop baby turtles reaching the sea.

Also, because the baby turtles use the light of themoon to find their way to the sea, light and noise fromcars and houses can lead them in the wrong directions.

To help save the loggerhead some beaches are nowclosed to tourists. The next time you’re at the beach, make sure to kick down your sandcastle and pick up yourrubbish before you leave. It could save a turtle’s life.

1 Another name for the loggerhead is theA Greek turtle.B Zakynthos turtle.C caretta caretta.

2 The loggerhead gives birthA at the same place every two years.B at different places every two years.C on the same beach every two months.

3 The loggerhead’s eggs are covered in thesand for aroundA 100 days. B 60 days. C 2 days.

4 Beach umbrellas that are put in the sand A can break turtle eggs. B don’t allow the turtles to get enough light. C can get in the way of turtles racing to the sea.

5 Litter and sandcastles can cause problems to turtlesA breaking out of their eggs. B making their way to the water. C laying their eggs.

6 Baby turtles find the direction to the water by A listening to the sea. B using light from cars and houses. C following the moonlight.

Divide the class into two groups. Students prepare cards in the following two areas: Grammar

(will/going to/conditionals) and Vocabulary and put them in two different boxes. Both groups

place their counters on the START box. Students take it in turns to roll the dice and match the

number on the dice to one of the topics. Students move their counter according to the number

rolled on the dice. They need to complete the sentences or answer the questions. If they give

acceptable answers, they stay where they are. If not, they move backwards one space. The first

I would like to offer a different idea: how about safaris? The animals are protectedand you can see them in their natural environment. All in all, zoos can be pleasant placesto spend a few hours and can help some endangered animals. However, animals thatwere born free should be able to live free.

Zoos give you the chance to be close to wonderful animals, like bears and snakes, some species of which do not exist in the wild any more. This is a completely differentexperience to seeing a documentary on TV! You can learn about the animals, andsometimes even feed them. Zoos keep animals alive that are not able to survive in thewild.

As long as the animals are well looked after, visiting a zoo can be a fun day outfor all the family. I used to go every year with my grandparents. However, I wonder howthe animals feel about being in cages.

On the other hand, some zoos keep the animals in small boxes. Occasionally, theanimals’ living area are dirty or overcrowded. Sometimes the animals have to do tricksand perform like in circuses. Animals are intelligent and they have feelings too. Maybethey do not like being locked up inside cages. It is unnatural for them.

Up is a computer-animated adventure film directed byPete Docter. It was released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2009 and opened the 2009

Cannes Film Festival in France - becoming the first animated film to do so.The main character of the film is a balloon salesman called Carl Fredrickson who lives with

his wife Ellie. One of Ellie’s dreams is to visit Paradise Falls in South America. After Ellie dies,Carl lives alone for many years and eventually he decides to fulfil Ellie’s desire and go toParadise Falls. It is an amazing adventure and he is joined, unexpectedly, by a young boy. They

meet some colourful characters on their journey including Dug, a dog that can speak, and Kevin, a colourful tropical bird. When Carl and his friends meet the evil explorer

Charles Muntz, their adventure almost turns into a nightmare. It’s easy to see why Up became the summer blockbuster of 2009. Ithas a gripping plot and an excellent cast of voice actors. EdwardAsner, starring as Carl, gives a very amusing performance. Thesoundtrack, composed by Michael Giacchino, is also excellent andthe film’s graphics really make the characters come alive.

Up is an imaginative and touching film that animation fans of allages are sure to enjoy. It is highly recommended.

Australia is the world’ssmallest and flattestcontinent. It is in theSouthern Hemisphere. Its name comes fromthe Latin word Australis

which means ‘southern’.The central and largest

part of the country is desertand is known as the Outback.

Not many people live in the Outback. Most people live on or near the south east and eastcoasts where the climate is better.

Before Australia was discovered by Europeansback in the 17th century, it was inhabited by peoplecalled the Aborigines. Stories and painting havealways been an important part of life for theAborigines. They use them to pass on their beliefsand traditions from generation to generation. Today, only 2% of the population is Aboriginal butaboriginal culture has influenced Australian societyin many ways and is known all over the world.Australia has also produced many talented andfamous actors. Many film directors have chosen toshoot their films in Australia because of its beautifullandscape.
