Bosun’s CallJoin us in our daily Bosun’s Call ceremony, reminiscent of Capella Singapore’s history as the home of the British officers of the Royal Artillery and their families. Bosun’s Call is a ceremony practised onboard naval ships whereby commands were passed down to the crew through blowing the Bosun’s whistle when voices were not audible over the sounds of the sea. The whistle blowing signifies one of the Navy’s commands for “all hands on deck” to receive their daily rationing of rum. Head bartender of Bob’s Bar, and his team, will wheel out a barrel every evening to serve tasting shots of homemade Grog, the Bosun’s Call drink.

One Kind HouseLearn to cook with a local. Prepare a traditional Singaporean meal with Mummy Soh, a retired school teacher, now committed to spreading the communal spirit that defined Singapore before the 1980s. Here is a chance to get up-close-and-personal with a local and discover vintage curios and artefacts that are peppered all over the house, combined with the warmth and buzz of a welcoming family home set in the heart of Eastern Singapore.

Qi & The CityA look at Singapore’s mystical fengshui with Singapore Sidecars. Fengshui or Chinese geomancy literally means wind and water which forms the foundations of Chinese metaphysics, or the invisible forces that connect the universe. Fengshui has an immense impact on Singapore’s landscape as it is a key factor in determining locations and designs on key aspects of the city. Let us take you on an exclusive Capella fengshui insider’s tour on a Vespa sidecar.

In the 1960s, Singapore comprised of villages known as kampungs in Malay. The characteristic of kampungs is the communal essence in which neighbours knew one another and were ready to give help when needed. Families would invite neighbours over for meals and children would play within the compound until they were called back for dinner at dusk. With the development of high rise public housing, that sense of belonging to a community, or what was known as the kampung spirit, had dissipated.

Enter One Kind House, a modern kampung with an eclectic touch, thoughtfully spruced up with art in the form of paintings on the walls by Mr. Ng Yak Whee, who is quite renowned

for his paintings in Singapore, and brother of the head chef and owner of the house, also affectionately known as Mummy Soh.

Mummy Soh is a retired school teacher. She was instrumental in moulding young minds for over 40 years before retiring about 16 years ago. Since then, she thought about selling her house which at one point, saw four generations living under the same roof, but her son, Calvin, persuaded her otherwise. To Calvin, the house represented memories of his childhood and a legacy. One Kind House’s architecture is reminiscent of Singapore in the 1960s; in fact the house is one of the five original structures remaining along that stretch of road. Mummy Soh also cultivates an urban farm next to the kitchen that boasts of a wide variety of herbs and spices such as chilli, lemongrass, basil, ginger, chives and even passion fruit.

Guests of Capella Singapore will not only learn to cook three of Singapore’s traditional dishes, but will also get to enjoy the fruits of their own labour, and more. Mummy Soh will prepare an additional three more local dishes to add to the sumptuous spread. Her plat du jour differs day by day, but one thing is consistent – she uses only the freshest ingredients from her urban farm. All other produce are bought on the same day from the local market. In between mise en place, guests will be led on a tour by her brother and painter Mr. Ng, as he explains his inspirations behind his creativity. Some lucky guests might even get a chance to glimpse into his studio.

QI & T HE C IT YA Vespa sidecar geomancy tour

After Sir Stamford Raffles acquired Singapore by treaty on 6 February 1819, he decided on a layout for the town designating areas for the business sector and for the Chinese, Indian, Arab and European population. This basic scheme continued into the 1970s and is still evident today. Thus, it is one of the most influential arrangements of the island city in its’ modern history and was carried out by its’ original European colonists. There are no records that Fengshui was taken into account at that stage.

There is evidence of geomancy practice in the 19th century but most of it is associated with architectural detailing of the buildings.

Today, a number of buildings or structures in Singapore are shaped and located in a way to harness the best outcome based on fengshui principles.

W H AT I S F ENGSHUI?

Fengshui or Chinese geomancy literally means wind and water and forms the foundations of Chinese metaphysics – the invisible forces that connect the universe. It is an ancient Chinese art of divining auspicious sites - a unique and comprehensive system of conceptualising the physical environment that regulates human ecology by influencing humanity to select auspicious environments and to build harmonious structures on them. Fengshui cannot be categorised as a religion, superstition or science because it has some aspects in each field.

The basic tenet of Fengshui is that certain locations are more auspicious than others for human built structures. The auspiciousness of a place is determined by the availability of vital energy or “Qi” that is supposed to flow underground meeting certain landform conditions and facing certain directions. An example of a desirable landform condition for

conserving vital “Qi” is a flat basin with background hills shaped like a horseshoe where a house or building is sheltered and with a watercourse in front. Such landform conditions are recommended because vital “Qi” is delivered through the background hills (“dragons”) to an auspicious site (house or building) and is conserved in the place because the “Qi” cannot cross the water.

Five elements are involved in Fengshui – wood, fire, earth, metal and water – each with its unique association with certain colours and symbolism.

Fengshui has made an enormous impact on Chinese and other East Asian urban landscapes as it is a key factor in determining city locations and city designs.
