Nikkō Sightseeing Guide

English edition

UNESCO has recognized Nikkō’s shrines and temples as a World Heritage center. The most notable of these are Nikkō’s Tōshōgū Shrine, Nikkōzan Rinnōji temple, and Futarasan shrine. Visitors can sense the profound historical importance of these sites. Here you can experience the spirit of the unique and long-lasting political system known as the Edo Shogunate, and you can sense the presence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established this system and became its first shogun.

Natural Magnificence, History, Heritage, Cuisine, Activities, People...Exciting, Revitalizing Nikkō Awaits Your Visit.Nikkō: A Trip You’ll Remember.

The Kinugawa Onsen, along the Kinugawa River canyon, are also nearby a number of exciting theme parks, including Tōbu World Square and Edo Wonderland (Nikkō Edo Mura). Visitors to Kawaji Onsen can also enjoy the natural splendid of the Ryūōkyo Gorge, and the comfort of natural hot springs.

These mountain villages are steeped in folklore reaching back 800 years, to before the Edo period, when the Taira clan settled here after they were defeated in battle by the Minamoto clan. The area is blessed with crystal-clear streams and great natural beauty. Go slowly and you will encounter numerous hot springs, including the Yunishikawa Onsen, the Kawamata Onsen, and the Okukinu Onsen.

Summer resort area, popular from old times to the present. At an elevation 1,000 m (3,280 ft), the area remains cool during the summer months. The area is filled with captivating nature, which you can see at Lake Chūzenji and the Kegon Falls as well as wetland areas including Lake Yunoko, Yukawa River, Senjōgahara, Odashirogahara and other locations. The entire wetland area has been registered as a protected site under Ramsar Convention.

During Edo times Imaichi flourished as a post station situated on Nikkō Highway, at the point where the road forked into the Nikkō Reiheishi and Aizunishi Highways. Today’s streets retain traces of their ancient appearance. Guinness World Records recognizes the beautiful Suginamiki Road as the world’s longest tree-lined roadway.

Ashio is situated southwest of Nikkō City, surrounded by mountains and valleys. From 1610, when copper was discovered here, until 1973, when the mountain was closed, Ashio flourished as the country’s top mining town. During the Edo Period, the mine supplied copper for coinage and for use in the construction of Nikkō’s Tōshōgū shrine and the roof tiles of Edo Castle. With the coming of the Meiji Era, mining techniques were modernized and the copper output went up.

World Cultural Treasure

One of numerous shrines that enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, first Shogun of the Edo Shogunate. The structure is representative of Tōshōgū style, with a dazzling multicolored gate decorated with 508 sculptures. The gate reflects Shogun’s wish for Japanese peace.

Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine Yōmeimon Gate

The nighttime illumination on the Nikkō shrines and temples—showing off these World Culture Treasures even in the dark—creates a mysterious ambiance. Try walking the approach to one of these shrines in the quiet of the evening, and you will feel a great difference from daytime visits. (Through early November)

Parade of 1000 Samurai WarriorsThe two-day event at Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine is held twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. A procession of over 1,200, dressed in 53 variations of armor and costume, carries portable shrines (mikoshi) to their destination at Otabisho. (Spring dates: May 17 and 18 Autumn dates: Oct 16 and 17)

Gōhan ShikiNikkōsan, where Buddhism and Shinto live side-by side, is a famous sacred training place for the mountain worship for the mountain priests. The Gōhan Shiki (Rice Meal Ceremony) is part of a unique Nikkō's ancient mountain Buddhism. Its origin dates back to the Nara Period, when the priest Shōdō built a temple in Mt. Nikkō. (April 2)

Nikkō YubaSoy milk is extracted from soybeans and boiled, producing a thin skin at the top of the liquid. The skin is lifted off, and dried…and that’s yuba. There are numerous ways to eat it: for example, by including it in sashimi, sushi rolls, or soba.

This is the main building of the Rinnōji temple complex. Built during the Heian Period, this is the largest wood building in eastern Japan. (Now undergoing renovation work projected to continue through 2020.)

Sanbutsudo Hall, at the Nikkōzan Rinnōji

The Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to the three sacred mountains of the area: Futara (also called Nantai), Nyohō, and Tarō. The stunning vermillion-lacquered Shinkyo Bridge (Sacred Bridge) is part of the shrine, and retains its long association with mysterious legends.

Quick Travel InformationNikkō City is located in the northwest part of Tochigi Prefecture. With an expanse of 1,449.87 square kilometers, it accounts for some 1/4 of the prefecture’s area. Its range extends over the Nikkō volcanic group, the upstream area of the Kinugawa River, and the basin of the Daiyagawa River. Many of the mountain areas surrounding Nikkō National Park are designated “developing mountain villages” with responsibility for cultivating watersheds and preserving the natural environment; some of the area is also designated for special upstream development. The region has varied topology; urban areas are on flatland with an altitude of about 200 meters (656 ft), while other areas are mountainous, with peaks reaching above 2,000 meters (6,562 ft). The area has an inland climate, with four distinct seasons favoring different types of recreation and different tourist attractions—a variety that draws many Japanese and foreign tourists year-round. Average yearly temperature is about 12°C in city areas, and about 7°C in the mountains. Summers are relatively cool; while winter temperatures often drop below freezing. The large temperature variations support a truly beautiful natural environment that changes with the seasons.

Visitors here in spring or early summer can observe many different plants in full bloom, including: Rhododendrons, mountain cherries, yamatsutsuji (azalea-like mountain plant), dogtooth violets, Rhododendron wadanum Makino, and Nikkō kisuge. At the same time, many flowers are also blooming on the Kirifuri Plateau. • Rhododendron quinquefolium: Bright pink flower that announces the coming of spring. These flowers appear over a large area, with those in mountainous districts faring best. • Nikkō kisuge: A one-day flower that blooms in the morning and withers away at night. Found on the Kirifuri Plateau, in clusters that look like beautiful golden carpets.

Nikkō National Park, and all of the natural beauty found all around Nikkō!

I’ve been here in Nikkō for fifteen years, and it really is a treasure-house of natural beauty. Nikkō National Park is such a vast nature area, with Mt. Nantai and so many other beautiful mountains, and the plateaus that extend to the base of the mountains, and the wonderful lakes—like Lake Chūzenji—and the ravines. Everyone should come to see it.

Nikkō is blessed with natural beauty, great water and air, and its great hot springs. Kinugawa Onsen, for example, offers more than excellent bath water; you also get the great views of mountain streams, and plenty of entertainment facilities. Kawaji Onsen has kept its status as a favored health spot since times of old. And then there’s the Yunishikawa Onsen, which continues to engender strong feelings as the place where the Taira family took refuge. If you’re planning a future visit, keep in mind that you’ll enjoy your stay even more if you study up a little on the area, and learn some Japanese, before you come.

Nice spots in Nikkō include Senjōgahara, the Ryūōkyo Gorge, and many of the waterfalls. And of course Nikkō Tōshōgū is quite famous, and then there are also many beautiful nature scenes and great hiking routes. If you’re here for just a day you can probably jump around and glimpse many of the major sites. But I’d recommend at least two or three days, to give yourself enough time to visit and experience some really nice places.

The Changing Seasons at Lake ChūzenjiMy favorite place here is Lake Chūzenji. It extends almost to the summits of the surrounding mountains. And since Japan has four distinct seasons, the appearance of the mountains and trees changes greatly, and very beautifully, as the year progresses. In addition to the natural scenery, I also like the availability of theme parks—including Edo Wonderland (Nikkō Edo Mura) and the Tōbu World Square in Kinugawa area. They’re great places to go with your family.

If you’re coming to Nikkō, you should certain try out the onsen.

Nikkō is noted for its distinctive wild birds. Summer birds arrive just as winter birds, such as the Bohemian waxwing and the Japanese waxwing, return north. Birds that inhabit the Kisugedaira Plateau include the common stonechat, the olive-backed pipit, and the Japanese white-eye. High-flying birds include the swift and the Asian house martin. The woods are home to a multitude of birds, the most numerous of which include the titmouse, the woodpecker, the Japanese bush warbler, the common cuckoo, and the blue-and-white flycatcher. Visit the mountain streams and you will see kingfishers and winter wrens. At Senjōgahara you may see the black-faced bunting, the narcissus flycatcher, and Latham’s snipe. Many kingfishers make their home along the streams; they are known as the “treasure of the mountain stream” in appreciation of their bright-colored beauty.

Nikkō Bird-Watching Guide

Nikkō’s beautifully clear streams are favored by char, inland salmon, and sculpin. Our lakes—including Lakes Chūzenji, Kawamata, and Yunoko—are home to many different varieties: inland sockeye salmon, rainbow trout, trout, pond smelts, and many more. • Inland sockeye salmon: A bright silvery-white fish. Lakes Chūzenji and Kawamata, among others, are stocked with this variety.• Char: The fish most associated with the Nikkō’s clear waters and beautiful natural surroundings. Char live only within clear streams.

Natural Magnificence, History, Heritage, Cuisine, Activities, People...Exciting, Revitalizing Nikkō Awaits Your Visit.Nikkō: A Trip You’ll Remember. Nikkō Resort Areas. Renew Your Life.

Exciting, Energetic Nikkō Japan’s Loveliest Resort Area

One of numerous shrines that enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu, first Shogun of the Edo Shogunate. The structure is representative of Tōshōgū style, with a dazzling multicolored gate decorated with 508 sculptures. The gate reflects Shogun’s wish for Japanese peace.

Mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. There are many fascinating things to see here, including the magnificent Nitenmon Gate, and then Kōkamon Gate, so reminiscent of Ryūgū Castle.

Nikkō Tōshōgū Yōmeimon Gate

Nikkōzan Rinnōji Taiyūin

One of Japan’s three most famous waterfalls. The thundering water drops from a 98-meter (322-ft). A deeply impressive hint of the true force of nature.

Ashio was once the “mining capital of Japan.” Today, the restored mine is the country’s largest mine exhibit.

Watarase Keikoku Railway

Ashio Copper Mine

Local trains running between Ashio and Ōmama. From April to November you can ride a trolley right through the beautiful ravine.

Ryūōkyo Gorge runs about 3 km (1.9 miles) between two intermountain hot springs: Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen. This beautiful scene was formed about 22 million years ago as the flow of the Kinugawa River wore away volcanic rock that had been thrown up by undersea eruptions.
