Permanent innovation and most
advanced materials guarantee
and constantly redefine the high
quality of SBA transformers and
power supplies. The heat resistant
materials from SBA meet highest
demands on safety, life and quali-
ty - VDE and TÜV approved.
Extensive controls in all areas of
production warrant the reliability
of all SBA products.
Every day, new proof of SBA's
performance potential is provided:
Products of special design in small
or medium lots permit individual
solutions for diverse applications in
industry - often within a few wor-
king days.

The following technical explanations provide useful informa-tion on important technical terms used in this catalog.Depending on the proposed use, additional or differentdefinitions may be required. The following explanations aretherefore not exhaustive.
Duty ratio, DRThe duty ratio (DR) of a transformer is the ratio betweenload time and cycle duration. Unless specified otherwise, the cycle duration is 10 min.
The reduction factor, f, indicates the possible reduction ofthe size in comparison with continual service.
Short time operation
If the design rating for continuous operation is smaller thanthe rated output, the transformer can be overloaded forshort periods provided it does not heat to more than thepermitted overtemperature.
Insulation classes
The provisions of IEC 85 and IEC 216 describe the heatresistance if insulation classes.
Normally, we design transformers according to class B alt-hough most materials can resist much higher temperatures(e.g., copper wire and impregnating resin are at least classF resistant).

Insulation structure
The following structures are possible:
-Transformers with basic insulation (e.g., power transformers for general service, control transformers)
-Transformers with double or extra strong insulation (e.g.,safety isolating or isolating transformers)
-Transformers without insulation between input and output (so called autotransformers)
Short-circuit resistance
The following distinctions are made:
Unconditionally short-circuit resistant transfor-mersare dimensioned in such a way that the temperature underoverload or short circuit conditions does not exceed thepermitted limits. To ensure this, the size must at least be dou-ble, and the no-load voltage is significantly higher than therated voltage.
Conditionally short-circuit resistant transformershave a built-in protection mechanism which opens the inputor output circuit when the transformer is overloaded orshort-circuited (e. g., fuses, thermal links, PTC thermistor, thermal switch).
Transformers without short-circuit resistance must be protected against overload or short circuit by amechanism that is not integrated in the transformer. This pro-tection must be provided by the user.
Protection types
The protection type marking consists of a code of two con-stant letters, viz. "IP" and two digits, e.g., IP 23.

Protection classThe protection class is a design feature of a product whichdesignates safety against shock current.
Protection class I: Product with safety ground terminal and basic insulation
Protection class II: Product without safety ground terminal and double or extra strong insulation.
Ambient temperatureIf no non-standard ambient conditions are specified in theorder, the transformer is designed for ta=40°C. If the actualtemperature is higher, the rated output must be reduced asshown in the following figure.
Laws and regulationsUnless required otherwise, we make our transformers toreflect state-of-the art and comply with the following lawsand regulations:
VDE 0570 EN 61558
Weights, dimensions and the construction may change asdesign revisions take place.
