Resilience in Times of Uncertainty
Uncertainty
“Uncertainty is the only certainty there is,
and knowing how to live with insecurity
is the only security.”
~John Allen Paulos.
Liminal space (Arnold van Gennep, “Les Rites de Passage, 1909)”
• The liminal space is the time between the ‘what was’ and the ‘next.’ It is a place of mystery.
•Liminal space is where all transformation takes place, if we dare to be present, wait and listen.
“Make the best use of what is in your power and take the rest as it happens.” Epictetus.

Moral injury
• Moral injury occurs when we perpetrate, bear witness to, or fail to prevent an act that transgresses our deeply held moral beliefs. In the health care context, that deeply held moral belief is the oath each of us took when embarking on our paths as health care providers: “alleviate suffering and do no harm”.
Resilience
“A universal capacity which allows a person….to prevent, minimiseor overcome damaging effects of adversity.
It is not just about reforming but about the possibility of growth.”
Monroe and Oliviere, in Resilience in palliative care, 2016.

The Foundation of Resilience
If love has not been smothered under fear, resentment, grievances and
hatred, but has been firmly established in the mind,
trust in other people and belief in one's own goodness are like a rock
which withstands the blows of circumstances.

I come to the fear of love
As I have often come,
To what must be desired
And to what must be done.
Only love can quiet the fear
Of love, and only love can save
From diminishment the love
That we must lose to have.
We stand as in an open field,
blossom, leaf and stem,
Rooted and shaken in our day,
Heads nodding in the wind.
