May 2017 Resident of the Month Congratulations to Betty Francisco, Glenbrooke’s Resident of the Month. Betty can be seen around campus and Saturdays in the Clubhouse facilitating the “Art with Betty and Friends” Class/Experience where all are invited to try their hand. Persons who have and/or continue to participate describe their experience as one with no judging and “a place where you can have fun and do your own thing.” This type of atmosphere is surely due, in great part, to Betty’s positive attitude and calm demeanor. Congrats again, Betty, for this most deserved recognition. Team Member of the Month Kudos to Michelle “Mitchy” Gile, Glenbrooke’s Team Member of the Month. Mitch can be seen all over — and we do mean all over — the campus; whether it be helping residents with their exercise routines in the Fitness Center, facilitating the Glenbrooke Crafters with various projects or leading aqua aerobics in the swimming pool. If that isn’t enough, she assists our transportation team as a back- up bus driver. Her versatility is topped only by her caring soul and kind heart. In a normal day, Michelle can get more accomplished than many could begin to imagine. To underestimate her capability would, therefore, be a huge mistake. Congratulations, Mitch. We are lucky to have you on our team and as part of the Glenbrooke family. Resident Road Trip On Friday, April 7, the “Out to Lunch Bunch” took a road trip with Wayne, our faithful Bus Driver, at the helm, to the Historic Grant Station for lunch at Rib City. Grant Station was first built by Louis Benson around 1894 who operated a general store before selling it to Lars Jorgensen when it was then called Jorgensen’s General Store. Once Jorgensen took over, he still ran the building as a general store, yet it also served as a post office, telegraph office and trading post. In 1956, Lars Jorgensen’s daughters sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. John Swiger. They continued to run the building as a general store and served the needs of Grant’s residents. They named the store The Towne & Country Shop. In March 1962, after the death of Mr. Swiger, the old store stood with closed doors. But the closing was not for long. In 1995, Robert and Lisa Knoblauch restored the shop as The Grant Grocery, and on June 25, 1999, the building was added to the US National Register of Historic Places as Jorgensen’s General Store. In October 2011, Chris Pozgar purchased The Historic Grant Station and has done many renovations to the building. It is currently operating as the East Coast’s first Rib City. The Historic Grant Station has expanded from just the building to three acres of land. Along with Florida’s finest Diner, Grant Station is home to Island Paddle and Station Works. All agreed the trip was enjoyable and the food was delicious. Until the next road trip... Dear Residents, Family and Friends of Glenbrooke Welcome spring, a season of rebirth and one which promises new beginnings. Here at Glenbrooke we are pleased to welcome, along with spring, many new residents to our community. May is marked by two distinct holidays honoring and commemorating two very deserving groups of people. Mother’s Day, celebrated Sunday, May 14, is a time to acknowledge mothers and the wisdom, strength and love they personify. Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, is a day to commemorate all who served their country and gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy every day. Please join us in the clubhouse at 10 a.m. as we honor those who gave all for this most blessed country. In the meantime, take care of yourselves, and reach out to meet one new neighbor. Your life will be richer for it! Gina Bell, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Michelle “Mitchy” Gile: Team Member of the Month as well as a real jewel. Betty Francisco, Glenbrooke’s very own Bird of Paradise and Resident of the Month. This group knows a road trip can sure work up an appetite. Joan asks, “What do you mean you don’t take orders over the phone?”
