This is the 9th edition of "Reside" and again our combined company magazine features a

stunning selection of beautiful Central London, Surrey and international homes. We hope you will

agree that the contents represent a perfect balance of prime editorial features, stimulating

photography and wonderful homes.

Our editorial feature "RON ARAD ARCHITECTS" can be found on pages 20 and 21. In March

2003 Ron Arad Architects were invited to design the first national museum dedicated to the

appreciation of design and architecture in Israel. A museum of international standard evolved, one

advocating Israeli design worldwide. The Design Museum Holon, a few miles south of Tel Aviv, was

therefore our unanimous choice of Front Cover image.

In Surrey Gascoigne Billinghurst is expanding its presence with the establishment of a new

Branch office in Esher High Street. The Hayden Hewett Letting Agency became part of the Gascoigne

Billinghurst group in April. New Branch Director Ben Cameron is set to establish our Residential

Sales activity in this delightful Surrey town whilst maintaining the excellent Letting and Property

Management service for which Hayden Hewett is renowned.

In The South of France Beauchamp Estates, extending its representation beyond Cannes, has

established an office in Nice facilitating the sale of properties in the additional areas of Monte

Carlo, Cap Ferrat, Villefranche and beyond. If you would like a veritable French experience then we

look forward to being of assistance to you.

Beauchamp Estates and Gascoigne Billinghurst: two independent companies sharing not just a

very special, unique working relationship and genuine passion for property but a true desire to

assist with all of your Residential property requirements. Our teams look forward to being at your

service.

Thank you for picking up this Summer 2011 edition of "Reside" and we very much hope you

enjoy reading it.

After several successful years inWimbledon Village, Caroline Burnsdecided to relocate her business,

Advocate Gallery to Ashtead, Surrey. With a growing client base from Surrey,

combined with living and raising a familyin the area, the time was right to makethe move. So when the perfect locationpresented itself, in the form of the oldbank in Ashtead, it was an easy decision.

“Historically banks hold a prominentposition on the High Street and aremunicipal in design. The building needed tomake a visual statement where the works ofart can be easily seen, as a lot of art is soldfrom the gallery window,” says Caroline.

Employing the highly acclaimedarchitect Richard Gardiner to draw up theplans for the space and project managethe works meant Caroline’s vision tocreate a modern environment whichreflects the best of British contemporaryfine art, was made a reality.

Richard’s first priority was letting lightinto the building, this was achieved byincorporating a full length glazed frontand two new display windows on the sidewall, thus creating a dual aspect frontagewhere work can be displayed in The Streetas well as in Grove Road and flooding thegallery with light.

But not everything was quite so straightforward, when it came to the bank’s vault, structurally it was impossible to removeas it has 3ft thick walls of reinforced high-density concrete! But a solution was nottoo far away; it has been opened up ontwo sides to create a darkened viewingarea featuring large subtle works that aremuted in colour.

Crucial to achieving the overallambience, it was essential that everythingin the building was black, white or glass, the main design components seen inframing. Interior design features, such asglass shelving, white furniture and lightingall needed to compliment this and notdetract from the artwork.

With her extensive experience of whatcustomers like, Caroline knew exactly theatmosphere that she wanted to create, anart gallery that you don’t feel intimidatedto walk into or pressurized once inside;where you don’t need to know anythingabout the "art-world" but simply knowwhat you like.

An

“It’s important that when clients walkinto the gallery they are not ‘hit’ by asales person, that they can browse anexhibition and look for that perfectgenuine piece of art, that they connectwith, at their own pace.”

Advocate Gallery aims to be the premiergallery in Surrey specialising in the best ofBritish contemporary fine art. Establishinggood relationships with those artists thatthey exhibit is key to their success, enablingCaroline to select the newest works firstand in turn offer exclusivity to her clients.

“Exhibiting British art is something Ifeel strongly about, there’s amazing talentin this country and to be able to showcasethe best of it is very rewarding.  I havealways been passionate about art andwant the gallery to reflect this."

By not importing work, dealing inreproductions or trading with massmarket suppliers, Advocate Gallery canoffer something unique to its clients.

Over the coming months the gallery willbe home to an ever-changing programmeof exciting exhibitions from establishedartists, such as celebrated landscapepainter Chris Rigby. After painting therugged moors and mountains of northEngland and Scotland, Chris had turnedhis attention to the Surrey Hills. Aselection of his new work, an explorationof the Surrey landscape, will be displayedexclusively at the gallery this autumn.

Premiering new artists is also an areathat Caroline is dedicated to, “we areproud of the fact that we have launchedseveral artists’ careers who are nowenormously successful today”.

It’s always preferable for a client toview the work in person before makingtheir purchase, but with the busy lifestyleswe all lead this can sometimes be tricky.Advocate Gallery can provide out ofhours viewing at the gallery or in yourhome. If you’re hesitating about apurchase, work can be loaned for a periodso that you have time to see how the pieceworks in different light and in differenthanging places.

In today’s financial climate, manyclients are also looking to invest shrewdly.Unlike most luxury purchases that dateand de-value as trends pass, if you choosewisely, art can work in exactly theopposite way. Advocate Gallery is happy to

guide you through the process, “I amthrilled when my clients’ remark that notonly does a piece continue to give themgreat enjoyment, but they have learnt thatit is now proving to be a healthyinvestment,” says Caroline.

Commissioning art is a growing area, owning a piece of original art that hasbeen created for you is simply magical.Advocate Gallery are very experienced inarranging a commission for you, after allit's their business to get it right!

Capturing a moment on canvas andportraying a mood using the subtleties ofan artist's technique means you can havethe ultimate gift or family treasure createdexclusively for you. When a client visitedwith a photograph from their honeymoonin the French Alps, Candice Tait was theperfect artist to translate this onto canvasby capturing the wild energy and beauty ofthe landscape. The result, a stunningwork of art that will be treasured forever.

“We’re extremely excited aboutrelocating to Surrey, not only will we benearer to many of our current clients, butare looking forward to forming newrelationships in and around the area. I thinkwe’ve created a welcoming space in which

to showcase our works of art. I certainlyenjoy walking into the gallery everyday andhope others will too,” says Caroline.

Conveniently located on the A24,between Leatherhead and Epsom and closeto Epsom Racecourse and the RAC Club, there is ample free parking for visitors.

Advocate Gallery grew out of AdvocateArt the leading artist agency, over 10years ago. ARCHITECTURE. INTERIOR DESIGN. BUILD. PROJECT MANAGEMENT.

CREATING EXCEPTIONAL HOMES FOR EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE

Working with clients in Africa who hail fromEurope. Easy. Designing and building their dream home in the US. No problem.Where to put the letterbox. Hmmm, tricky.

Not that we had a huge issue finding the right spot for the mailman’sofferings. But it’s a good example of our attention to detail. Especiallyfor a project of this international scale.

You see, we were commissioned to design and build a home that hadit all. Quite literally.

In terms of style, it had to be timeless yet future-proof. It had to bringback happy childhood memories of our client’s time at an Englishboarding school. And yet it still had to be an intimate family home.

You’ll understand why this wasn’t so easy when you consider someof the brief’s more unusual elements. A south-facing orangery. Asecret staircase leading to a whisky cellar. A leisure complex with aTurkish hammãm and pool. A picture gallery for their collectionof contemporary art that connects a dining room, a library and aballroom. Oh, and a chapel in the grounds.

As you can imagine, it took some careful consideration. Then wehit upon how to connect these disparate rooms and still create anintimate family home: an internal courtyard. We designed the houseas four separate wings. Then we tied them together to create amagnificent central quadrangle.

We achieved all this with the minimum of fuss. You may bewondering how.

Well, it’s projects like this where our RESIDENCE service comesinto its own. Established two decades ago, it combines architecture, interior design, building and project management. We can even helpyou find and finance a property to refurbish or the perfect plot tobuild on. Providing all these disciplines allows us to seamlessly fulfilthe most demanding briefs.

PS. Still wondering about the mailman? Well, we saved him a longwalk by placing the letterbox at the gatehouse. (You see, we do like tobe thoughtful as well as creative.)

RON ARADArchitectsRon Arad Architects was established as an independent

practice in May 2008, branching out as a daughter company

of the long established design studio Ron Arad Associates.

T he two studios share thesame building in Chalk Farmin London, and enjoy thefrequent overlap of interests, activities and knowledge this

proximity offers. The practice comprises ateam of 10 architects and architecturalassistants, under the directorship of RonArad, Caroline Thorman and Asa Bruno, and has recently completed two new-builtworks; the Mediacité in Liege and theDesign Museum Holon in Israel.

Ron Arad Architects’ thinking, form-finding, volumetric design and realisationdraws on resources and materials thathave been at the source ofexperimentation by the practice since itsinception in 1981 as ‘One-Off Studio.’ Theexperimentation with and questioning ofthe limits of construction engineering, thecelebration of the integrity and characterof the materials employed in projects, andthe often radical re-conception of form, are key to the activities of the practice.Supporting this, they have extensiveexperience working at both the large andsmall scale around the world, and haveextensive knowledge of the challengesand opportunities that need to beaddressed in architectural projects. Theycreate cohesive solutions that connectpeople to the built environment throughthe synthesis of the small with the large;from the small scale of furniture andpublic art, through to the large scale ofthe building.

Ron Arad Architects think imaginativelyand inventively about the design of publicplaces and buildings and workcollaboratively to ensure that solutions fitwith their clients’ vision and the sites’constraints and opportunities.

A number of projects are currently attender stage and are due to go on site inthe course of 2011, with 154 Ha YarkonStreet being the first. The practice iscurrently working on a number of newprojects in France, Italy, Belgium, Israel,Morocco. and the UK. The practice’s workhas also recently been showcased as partof the Ron Arad: No Discipline exhibitionsat the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris(November 2008) and the Museum ofModern Art, New York, which was themost visited architecture and designexhibition worldwide in 2009. Mostrecently the ‘Restless’ exhibition at theBarbican Centre in London showcased adiverse collection of industrial design, studio pieces and architectural projects.Further exhibitions are scheduled for theStedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2011) andthe DMH Israel (2012).

The prolific and pioneering workcarried out by the combined Ron AradStudio over 3 decades in the fields ofdesign, art and architecture, hasculminated in a series of high-profileretrospective exhibitions at the CentreGeorges Pompidou in Paris (No Discipline,2008), Museum of Modern Art in NewYork (No Discipline, 2009), and at the

such as ArtNews, Blueprint, ArchitecturalDigest, Mark Magazine, Building Design,Interni, to editorial coverage in the NewYork Times, Time Magazine and TheIndependent, to name a few.

Born in 1951 in Tel Aviv, and educated at Bezalel Academy of Art andDesign in Jerusalem, and later at theArchitectural Association in London, RonArad co-founded the Covent-Garden-basedOne Off Studio with Caroline Thorman in1981, and later the design andarchitectural practice Ron Arad Associatesin 1989. In 2008, Ron Arad Architects wasestablished to cater for the expandingarchitectural activities of the studio.

Ron Arad’s constant experimentationwith the use and potential of material andform, and the radical questioning of thelimits of structure, discipline andconvention in the making of studio pieces, art and architecture, has placed him at theforefront of contemporary creative culture.Over 3 decades, Ron Arad has also

So what exactly are the benefits ofleasing, as opposed to taking out apurchase loan? Firstly, your monthlypayments will be significantly lower – bybetween 30 and 60%; secondly, and as aresult, you can get more car for yourmoney; thirdly, by coinciding the length ofthe lease with the warranty period, youcan dispense with maintenance worries;fourthly, most leases require little or nodown-payment; and fifthly, unless youwant to buy or trade the car at the end ofthe term, you avoid the hassle of selling aused car.

Different options will apply or be moreattractive to company purchases than to aprivate individual, but the above benefitsapply to all.

Covase is a vehicle contract hire andleasing specialist with many yearsexperience of providing vehicle finance forfleet (and individual) owners – includingfor the last 14 years, Beauchamp Estates, the co-sponsors of this magazine.

Colin Ford, one of the company’sDirectors, explains the company’s ethos:“We recognise that our customers needobjective information and advice to helpthem decide how to proceed. And ofcourse, in any consultative process of thiskind, trust is probably the most importantingredient. You need to have confidence inevery aspect of the process, and especiallyour ability to recommend the best optionfor each and every customer.

“We see our role as much more than justgiving you a price for a particular vehicle:we bring value to the equation bysimplifying the technical complexities ofany deal, acting as advisor and consultant,as well as supplier, so you understandwhat is best for you, in your uniquecircumstances.

“Certainly we represent good value, butwe bring other values to the equation too, like personal service, attention to detailand long experience in the market.”

Gary Hersham, Managing Director ofBeauchamp Estates, concurs: “Colin hasbeen personally looking after my vehicleneeds for over 14 years, and I can testifyto the quality of the service he has givenme, and the company, during that time.

“I would describe Covase as a caringsmall organisation with superb financefacilities.”

thing or two about money. No one wouldclaim that a brand new motor vehicle is abrilliant investment. Its value can only goone way, so there are strong arguments formanaging that depreciation via asuccession of stage payments, wherebyyou only pay for that depreciation ingentle tranches. Otherwise known as leasefinance.

Within that scenario, however, there is abewildering array of methods (or‘products’) to choose from: contract hire, lease purchase, finance lease, to name justthe three most popular. But how do theydiffer, and more importantly, which is thebest option for you and your specific needsand circumstances?

As with most things in life that areimportant, finding professional impartialadvice is critical. This is not just aboutyour financial situation: also important arethings like what mileage you are likely todo; who will be driving the vehicle and forwhat purposes; how long you expect tokeep the vehicle; and what flexibility youmight want in terms of changing it.

In addition, each car’s CO2 emissionshave an impact on both the company’s andindividual driver’s taxation. You needsomeone who can explain the complexitiesin words of one syllable, so youunderstand completely the implications ofany vehicle acquisition.

LEASE OR PURCHASE?

A fter the roof (or roofs) overyour head, vehicles probablyrepresent the next biggestfinancial consideration thatyou will make. At the same

time, the options for finance are evenmore complex and misunderstood thanthe mortgage market. How do you decidehow to pay for your latest four-wheelpride and joy?

John Paul Getty is alleged to have said,“If it’s an appreciating asset, buy it; if it’s adepreciating one, lease it,” and he knew a

F or those who have never seenthe sport of polo, the VeuveClicquot Gold Cup for TheBritish Open Championshipcarries the cachet of golf’s

British Open, or Wimbledon’s tennisfortnight in both its significance, and forthe way it is revered within polo circles.

It remains the pinnacle of the Englishhigh-goal polo season for players, patronsand spectators alike.

Indeed, since its inception over half acentury ago, in 1956, it has become themost important pro-am polo tournamentplayed outside Argentina, and the mostcoveted trophy in the sport.

Its home is Cowdray Park Polo Club, where annually over 40 matches areplayed over a three-week period. Set in an'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'within Viscount Cowdray’s 16,500 acreestate in Midhurst, West Sussex, many ofthe matches take place against thebackdrop of the South Downs, in front ofthe world famous Cowdray ruins.

For many, it has become a permanentfixture in the summer social and sportingdiary as part of the old-fashioned

It is an ambience where Pimm’s, picnicsand Princes blend seamlessly in the throng

The first competitive tournaments wererecorded on the House grounds in 1910, andcontinued to develop and gain popularityuntil the advent of the Second World War,which saw the sport all but die out, due tothe disbanding of the Cavalry regiments, with mechanisation superceding the role ofthe Cavalry in the British Army.

Indeed, Cowdray Park’s role in the re-establishment of polo in Englandfollowing the war can never beunderestimated. The sport’s revival waslargely due to a legend within polo: JohnChurchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, who passed away in 1995, in his eighties.

Having lost an arm in Dunkirk duringWW II, the 3rd Viscount Cowdray continuedplaying the sport and even umpired into hisseventies using a prosthetic arm designedand fashioned by his gunmakers, Churchills, which was fitted by medical experts at therenowned limb hospital at Roehampton.

The founding father turned CowdrayPark into one of the most famous poloclubs in the world. Underpinning itsdevelopment was the fact that he wantedpeople to come and play there and feelwelcome. He charged paltry entrance fees, gathered up his friends from his waryears, imported ponies from Argentinaand then lent the ponies to his friends for

free to form teams. Earl Mountbatten hada team there in the Fifties.

The warmth he generated then is stillat the very heart of the Club today, and ispalpable as you walk in through theentrance gates.

HRH The Prince of Wales, referring to theGold Cup for the British Open at CowdrayPark in Polo at Cowdray*, said “…its final istoday the highlight of the polo year. I havebeen trying to win it for the past 14 years, but despite being in the final twice thisparticular prize has eluded me!”

The love of the event has indeed passeddown from father to son. HRH HarryWales has also played at Cowdray withina Gold Cup tournament.

In other words, regardless of who you are,it feels as if you are family at Cowdray Park. There is a special atmosphere of warmth atthe club felt by both those inside the sport, and often remarked on by both players andspectators.

The Gold Cup tournament is playedover a three-week period annually in July, culminating in the final, which attractshardened polo addicts and polo first-timers alike, from all corners of the world,to witness two teams who have battledtheir way to the winners’ podium liftingthe splendid golden trophy.

While a high goal event today, it beganwith humbler origins. A little over fiftyyears ago, an Argentine farmer calledAntonio Heguy came over to England onholiday with three of his friends. LordCowdray had invited them to play in hisnew tournament.

They arrived with a boat-load of homebred horses – in stark contrast to today’smulti-million pound high-goal teamoperations. Back then the Heguy team,Los Indios, beat the home side nine goalsto four to become the first winners of theGold Cup. →

No one could have predicted then justhow prestigious the Gold Cup tournamentwould later become. Tournament entrants are put into

leagues following an open draw from aVeuve Clicquot ice bucket, and a palpablefrisson is always felt around the room asteams see who they will face in theopening round. These days, mobilephone cameras record the drawimmediately and are sent to Argentina.News of the draw is instant, and in polo, makes world news.

The top eight teams progress throughto the quarter finals, and the semi-finalsof the Gold Cup are played on theThursday before the Sunday final.Aficionados believe – without question –that this is the best day’s polo in Europe, attracting a large crowd. It is not a day ofpomp and ceremony. It is laidback andrelaxed off the field, often with nail-bitingtension on it.

Semi-finals day attracts like-mindedpolo addicts. It is regarded as theafternoon on which most polo insidersgather to discuss the issues of the Englishhigh-goal season.

Creating the most powerful Bentley road car ever meant pushing theboundaries of 21st century technology, Steven Hall takes a drive...

Extreme Bentley

Page 55: Reside 9 | Summer 2011

summer collection 53

I arrive at the stunning Bentley Kentshowroom in Sevenoaks, Kent, notall of my days are like this, havingbeen given the keys by BrandManager Stephen Jackson my 'task'

over the weekend is to test drive the all newBentley Continental Supersports. This newedition is lighter and much faster than otherBentleys and it runs on bio-fuel. Think ofthe Bentley Continental Supersports as agreat engineering research programmewhich thankfully came to fruition. That'sbecause Bentley engineers spent their sparetime tinkering with various aspects of theGT Speed to see how far they could pushthe performance envelope and wow did they

push it. The result is the fastest, mosthardcore Bentley that's ever been producedwith a top speed of 204mph. What it standsfor is this. It is the fastest road-going Bentleyever, and the fastest Bentley full stop. ThisContinental Supersports weighs less than theregular GT Coupé or the slightly quickerSpeed version, so now it’s two and a quartertonnes instead of two and a half, and hasyet more power from its 6.0-litre, W12,twin-turbo engine. This engine is effectivelytwo narrow-angle V6s next to each other, sharing possibly the most intricatelymachined crankshaft I have seen.

Time to step inside and slip into the firm, enveloping leather bucket seats created by

Bugatti and hand-trimmed in the BentleyCrewe factory. The carbon fibre trim, consoleand fascia are very much a radical departurefrom the use of wood and leather, giving an‘oh so special’ look and feel. One touch of thestarter button and the beast is alive with anall powerful thrum, the firmness of thesuspension noted as soon as I pull away. There are four ride programmes - comfort, normal, sport one and sport two. I soondiscover that riding in anything softer thansport one is simply not needed, even forcommuter levels of comfort. Body roll isnever an issue, cornering loads simply don'taffect you. The Bugatti bucket seats have thatsorted and you are nailed into the seat.

Page 56: Reside 9 | Summer 2011

One small issue is making doubly surethat with 621bhp at your control you don'tenter bends too quickly. However thecarbon-ceramic brakes are forgiving andgive you a sporting chance!

As I leave Kent on my way to the WestCountry the power and speed is impressive

to say the least. The original Continental GTCoupe was launched some eight years ago. This new version however takes things to awhole new level. The thirteen percentpower increase and drop in weight of 110kgmeans the power to weight ratio increasesfrom 238 to 271bhp per tonne, the 0 to

100mph now stands at just 8.9 seconds, thisreally is supercar performance. Sitting on 20inch alloys at 40mph plus the car glides andthe real enjoyment begins.

As I make my way onto the M25 I thinkthe Bentley brief with the new ContinentalSupersports was simply 'faster than you

would ever want to go’. Trust me, Bentley'sChief Engineer Dr Ulrich Eichhorn achievedhis aim. Eichhom is the force behindBentley's well-established policy ofcontinuous improvement and his passion forhis cars is simply second to none. With allthis 'speed' it should not be lost that the

new Continental Supersports is Bentley'sversion of an economy car. It has beenpainstakingly engineered to produce its621bhp whether burning E85 (15 percentpetrol, 85 percent ethanol) or pure pumppetrol or any combination of the two. Thismakes the engine management system

versatile enough to cope and is a moreimportant engineering achievement than isgenerally perceived. Bentley aim to haveits entire range with this capability by2012, which will allow Bentley to claimthat supercars can go green without beingboring, slow or small.

Page 58: Reside 9 | Summer 2011

summer collection56

Slow, boring or small? None of thesewould be used to describe the Supersports, complete with an extra expanse of meshedgrille, two nonsense extractor grills on thetop surface of the bonnet along with acomplete lack of shiny trim. Insteadsmoked steel mouldings and a set of themost beautiful gleaming black alloys arethe order of the day. Wearing these thecar's huge but light carbon-ceramic brakesand some special lightweight suspensionparts remove some 20kg from the weightof the standard Continental. Weight is alsolost by lighter front seats and the removalof back seats (although a four-seaterversion is now an option).

My dream has ended. After four hoursof driving the fastest and most powerfulBentley ever built I arrive in the WestCountry just in time for dinner at thestunning new South Sands Hotel inSalcombe. Whilst it may not be a toppriority for every owner, the clear aim wasto create a top-end performance car thatin the right hands could be a real matchand more for the Ferraris and Porsches.

“ET IN ARCADIA EGO”JANINE STONE DESCRIBES HOW INTERNATIONAL FAMILIES ARE BRINGING

THE HOMES OF KNIGHTSBRIDGE AND MAYFAIR TO THE HOME COUNTIES.

At Janine Stone, finding a property isn’t

often the issue. It’s what you can do with it

once it’s officially yours. Most period

architecture of note has a listing of some

kind attached to it and this can limit the level

of adaptation and refurbishment that is

allowed. Buyers demand the same levels of

craftsmanship and technology that they

enjoy in their London house, but wrapped in

a heritage home. Neo-Georgian, Neo-Arts &

Crafts or neo anything for that matter is just

not acceptable. The property needs to look

and feel like a home with a history.

But how is this achieved? Most period

houses were built for a different kind of

living; structured, ritualistic and formal.

Neither the layout norm the room sizes

offer the kind of space that relaxed modern

living requires. Whilst creaky floorboards

and occasionally draughty windows are

accepted by the British as quirks of a

period home, for many international

families, this is not acceptable.

New houses today don’t need to look

like new houses and modern design, building

methods and technologies utilised by

professional residential architects and interior

designers can create homes that not only

reflect the quality expected by modern

families, but that allow the delineation of

open-space living that suits their lifestyles.

Creating a home from scratch allows you to

dictate the orientation of the house, the style

of architecture, the number of rooms and

their usage and the amount of space. And,

while the interior will match modern living

aspirations, the exterior will look like it has

endured the British weather through endless

decades. Modern artisans can apply

techniques such as ‘weathering’ brickwork to

give the perception of centuries old brick

making methods, sanding paving stones to

age them, patinating exterior ironwork and

using products such as coal dust and sharp

sand or garden horrors such as lichen and ivy

to give the illusion of age to brickwork and

stone detailing. Inside the same attention

to detail is applied with fine paints providing

the faintest of nicotine stains on drawing

room ceilings, traditionally mixed lime based

paints giving the right kind of sheen to the

walls and blown Crown glass in the window

panels which wonderfully distorts your

reflection. Even the garden can receive

the same treatment and specialist growers

can supply mature trees and hedges, Old

English species of plants and even lay a

camomile lawn on your behalf. This

combination of almost magical skills can

trick the eye into thinking that the perfect

country home was designed a century ago

and has been laid out before you.

Two of our most recently completed

projects, significant properties in the Home

Counties are a showcase for our design and

ability in creating a new generation of

period homes. In addition to the comforting

aesthetic that these homes provide for their

owners, they also help to keep their financial

advisors happy as creating a luxury home of

stature in the right location can also pay

dividends, securing the property’s place in

society for years to come.

www.janinestone.com

C ountry home ownership is not just

the domain of the British and for

over 100 years sophisticated families

the world over have left their weekday

cities in search of a more relaxed weekend

environment. The “legacy home” was a

calling card, a means of announcing a

family’s arrival and established presence

and some of the finest residential country

architecture around the world was created

for the entrepreneurs of the day.

And indeed, as many regarded the creators

and owners of those as arriviste, many

might regard the tastes of today’s wealthy

set as outré. Outré or not, as the UK

becomes a primary base for many

international families, the demand for a

home in a sylvan space that is easily

accessible from central London, continues

to grow. Providing an opportunity to wake

to the sound birdsong as opposed to a

passing bus, the right home in the country

can be a significant status symbol.

Luckily favourable geography is on hand

and some of the UK’s most lovely

countryside is just a short drive from the

hustle and bustle of Mayfair and

Knightsbridge. Surrey, Berkshire and

Oxfordshire are some of the most popular

country home destinations, encompassing

the South Downs, The Cotswolds, The

Chilterns and the finest Thames villages.

There is a wealth of period architecture

covering some of the most influential styles

known today.

“The Hillock Residences” is the latest

project in an extensive list of high class

developments both in Gozo as well as in

Malta. The developer will bring to the

project what they have been consistently

achieving in their other developments – an

elegant and superior design, coupled with

exceptional quality in construction.

Gozo is a small island, just nine miles

by four, with a population of under

25,000 inhabitants. It enjoys

a breathtaking countryside and

a coastline of spectacular cliffs

interrupted with small sandy, crystal

clear bays and charming coves. It forms

part of the Maltese archipelago, sitting

right in the middle of the Mediterranean,

just 94 km south of Sicily.

The project enjoys the double benefit of

the proximity of the bustle of a seaside

resort, and the quiet and calm

atmosphere of a residential area with

surrounding country and sea views.

THE WORLD OFPATEK PH IL IPPE

To enter the world of Patek Phil ippe is

to discover a universe where the exceptional

is the rule. You are choosing a watch whose

technical perfection and timeless aesthetic

appeal ignore the years. You are joining

the circle of connoisseurs for whom

only the authentic and enduring

is truly beautiful .

Opposite: The Patek Philippe Seal – a hallmark of excellence.

SELF-WINDING CALATRAVA—REF 5153G

In 2009, the Calatrava Reference 5153 in an Officer-style case with a hinged back

was launched as a new yellow gold version with a silvery opaline dial. Now, it

celebrates a stylish comeback with a white gold case and a striking black dial

featuring a hand-guilloched center.

SELF-WINDING NAUTILUS—REF 7008/1A

Reworked in 2009, the casually elegant line of Nautilus watches for women now

welcomes the Ladies Automatic Nautilus, its first diamond-set steel models with

self-winding movements. The dials, featuring the emblematic Nautilus embossing,

are available in various styles, among them as precious blue-tinted or black Tahician

mother-of-pearl versions.

We inherited our passion for supreme

workmanship, our respect for our

client and our care for the smallest

detail from our two founders. Polish-

born aesthete Antoine Norbert de

Patek wanted to create the most

beautiful watches in the world. His

partner, the brilliant inventor Jean-

Adrien Philippe, dreamed of pushing

back the frontiers of watchmaking

technology. Together they laid the

foundations of an exacting

philosophy that perpetuates and

invigorates Geneva’s great

watchmaking tradition.

From 1839 onwards, fuelled by the

volume of know-how passed down

from generation to generation and

the ceaseless drive to innovate, Patek

Philippe has maintained its place at

the forefront of fine watchmaking.

True to the founders’ values, it has set

its own way – always focusing on the

long-term view.

To give lasting expression to that

philosophy of quality and ensure that it

is transmitted to the watchmakers,

engineers and artisans of the future,

Patek Philippe has created its own

quality hallmark. The Patek Philippe

Seal goes beyond the Swiss

watchmaking industry’s recognized

criteria. It is the only hallmark applying

to the entire watch – the movement and

the external elements – from concept to

after-sales service, including the way it

is built and finished and the checking of

its functions and rate accuracy.

Our company’s independence and

family ownership enable us to

guarantee that we shall never

compromise in terms of the perfection

of our watches. Having presided over

Patek Philippe’s destiny from father to

son since 1932, we ourselves have all

grown up in and with the manufacture.

We bear the genes of Patek Philippe

and out devotion to our mission within

the company reflects our resolute

intention of passing down this heritage

to future generations, just as our

clients pass down their watch. The

passage from third to fourth

generation in autumn 2009* confirmed

that the links are as strong as ever.

As the guardians of the Patek

Philippe quality and spirit, we shall do

everything required to continue

producing “the most beautiful

watches in the world”.

Successful Estate Agency in ElmbridgeThe independent and privately ownedGascoignes Property Services group has announced that, from April theHayden Hewett Estate Agency businessprominently located in Esher High Street, has become part of their EstateAgency operation.

Managing Director Ian Davies says “We are thrilled

to welcome our new colleagues at Hayden Hewett

in Esher High Street to the heart of our Gascoigne

Billinghurst brand, with offices in Cobham, Claygate,

Hinchley Wood, Woking, and now in Esher. For us,

Hayden Hewett and Esher are the missing piece of

the jigsaw, bringing with them local knowledge and

expertise for the Esher area, whilst complementing

the residential sales and lettings success we are

already known for.”

Previously a lettings only estate agency, the

Hayden Hewett business will shortly extend its

residential estate agency activities to encompass

sales and acquisition. Gascoigne Billinghurst

have previously

enjoyed a

degree of

success in selling homes in Esher from their nearby

offices in Cobham, Claygate and Hinch y Wood,

but this consolidation of the two businesses will, in

Davies’s words “enable the whole to be greater

than the sum of the parts”

Hayden Hewett Director Karen Muddyman

comments: “This announcement follows a period of

intensive planning and I am excited by the creation

of an enlarged and dynamic business, within which my

Gascoignes Property Services is the holding company for

Gascoigne Billinghurst and its various branches, Gascoignes

Surveyors, and Gascoignes International.

The company was formed in 2002 by Ian Davies and Robert

Gascoigne-Pees, the latter whose family name has been associated

with Surrey estate agency since the 1930’s. When Surrey Estate

Agency Billinghurst Higby Chard was acquired by them in 2003

the local trading name was modified to Gascoigne Billinghurst,

which of course has nothing whatsoever to do with the

Countrywide corporate chain that still bears Robert’s family name.

deepRootsIn light of the recent publication of his first book, Garden,

acclaimed landscape garden designer Randle Siddeley reflects ona lifetime in the garden design business.

that run

Page 139: Reside 9 | Summer 2011

summer collection 137

T he roots of Randle Siddeley’spassion for gardens certainlyrun deep. From earlychildhood experiences of thegreat outdoors, to teenage

years spent shadowing his father, renowned interior designer John Siddeley,an unerring enthusiasm for design andhorticulture was cultivated duringRandle’s seemingly industrious youth. Now an acclaimed landscape gardendesigner with 35 years’ experience underhis belt, Randle, whose official title is TheLord Kenilworth, has written his firstbook, Garden. It not only celebrates asuccessful career in landscape gardendesign, but also gives an intimate insightinto the milestones of a lifelong passion.

As a boy growing up in Suffolk, surrounded by Constable’s rural landscape,Randle was trusted with his own gardenplots to tend in the grounds of the familyhomes - Old Oak Cottage, and later, TheDeans. He delighted in watching seeds thathe had planted transform into flowers, andit was in these early days that, in his ownwords, he “realised that a garden allowedyou to escape and to create your ownworld.” Much knowledge was gleaned fromthe gardener, Mr Buckledy, who Randleinterrogated persistently about hisgardening practices, apparently much tothe amusement (and patience) of this oldgardening hand. In his teenage years, jobsat Crampthorne’s nursery, and the Chelseaflorists Pulbrook & Gould, honed Randle’senthusiasm, skills and understanding ofplant life. However, it was his work as ayoung man alongside his father whichbrought about an interest in the synergybetween inside and outside space, andwhich proved to be the springboard for hiscareer in landscape design.

Under his father’s expert guidance,Randle learnt the importance ofunderstanding the mechanics of design, something reflected in the attention todetail applied to his projects today. Asexplained in Garden “He [John Siddeley]believed, rightly, that a good designershould understand the construction of ahouse and everything that went on behindits walls... The same thing applies tolandscape design. It is not enough toselect plants or choose the right colour ofstone. You have to understand aspect, light, climate, soil, water tables and winddirection. You have to be able to lookbeyond what is there and see howsomething radically different might work.

Page 140: Reside 9 | Summer 2011

summer collection138

You have to feel a sympathy with the settingof the house and garden, with thearchitecture and age of the building, with thepeople whose garden this is. And then youhave to work within constraints of budgetand time to achieve a magical result.”

These are the challenges of garden designthat Randle took on board when he set uphis landscaping business in 1975. Today, histwin companies, Siddeley Landscape Designsand Randle Siddeley Associates are wellregarded globally for their commitment toexcellence and bespoke design. From privateresidential gardens in town and country, tolarge commercial schemes in the UK andoverseas, Randle and his team applyvisionary imagination, understanding andtechnical skill to each and every project.

In what has become a huge growthindustry during the past few decades, theaward-winning team has embracedchanging working practices, concerns andemerging trends, including sustainability.Randle was instrumental in pioneering theconcept of design-and-build, stronglybelieving that landscape design shouldencompass every stage of a garden’screation - from concept to installation, and even maintenance. Today, wellthought out, attractive outside space isrecognised as being as important as theinterior design of a home in terms ofvalue, appeal and longevity.

Unlike interior design, the organicnature of a garden presents the difficultyof creating something that continuously

evolves. In Garden, Randle demonstratesvaried solutions to this challenge, and thespecific challenges of each particularproject, handpicked from his extensiveportfolio of work. “The book consists of afantastic cross section of projects, “Randleexplains. “There is everything fromtraditional English country estates, through to contemporary urban spaces. Italso illustrates the extent of ourinternational projects - in North America, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Each project is extremely special in itsown way and I like to think every one istotally unique because of our commitmentto working closely with the client toensure their personal style is reflected intheir garden.”

Indeed, what unites the 26 case studiesincluded in the book is a desire to make gardens that suit both the landscape thatsurrounds them and the people who usethem. Randle shows how achieving astrong core design is essential in order tothen make valid and effective choices ofmaterials, plants, trees, furniture, lightingand artworks. The book also includesadditional advice for those wishing todesign their own spectacular garden.Randle recognises that gardens are formany people a chance to engage withnature and create an outdoor space that isboth pleasing and personal.

In the touching heartfelt openingintroduction to Garden, Randle concludes,

“Since boyhood, I have seen the happinessthat gardens give, a reward for all thepatience and hard labour they entail. Ithink their enduring popularity is to dowith what I first discovered at Old OakCottage - that sense of creating your ownprivate world. For anyone who desires todo that for themselves, I hope this bookwill be both a guide and a friend.”

Garden, by Randle Siddeley, edited by Helen Chislett, was published in May 2011 by Frances Lincoln, priced at £50.
