• Point• Evidence• Explain
What are the environmental, social and economic consequences of deforestation?
List as many as you can
on different

What are the environmental, social and economic consequences of deforestation?
Learning Outcomes:Describe and explain the following consequences.• Loss of resources
and trade• Loss of species
diversity• Loss of carbon
reservoir• Changes to local
climate• Loss of tourism and
recreation.
Watch the second clip and write down why clearing the forest might affect
the whole world
Watch the clip and write down 3 ways in which you think the local environment has
been damaged.
What are the impacts of deforestation on the nutrient cycle? TASK Redraw this and label it to show what happens when the trees are
removed.

Write this into your book in your own preferred learning style
Task – Read the flow chart then fill in your version showing what will happen after the trees are cut down. Remember to aim for opposites!
Pick from• Very few leaves
dropped• Little vegetation
growth• Nutrients don’t
stay in soil but are washed out (leaching)
• Not many nutrients in soil
• Infertile soils

TASK 1Complete the consequences grid.
Make sure you explain the reason for the impact and the further consequences that it will have.
TASK 2Complete the past paper question
Challenge Questions1. What is the Forest Stewardship Council and how does it encourage the sustainable use of forests?2. Why is it a contradiction that MEDCs criticise LEDCs for wanting to exploit their forests?
What is the Forest Stewardship Council• FSC = an NGO established to promote the responsible management of the world’s
forests• Forest owners who want FSC accreditation have to manage their forests sustainably
and products marked with the FSC label should come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations
Example FSC rules:• Prohibit conversion of forests or any other natural
habitat • Respect of international workers rights • Respect of Human Rights with particular attention to
indigenous peoples • Prohibit the use of hazardous chemicals • No corruption – follow all applicable laws • Identification and appropriate management of areas
that need special protection (e.g. cultural or sacred sites, habitat of endangered animals or plants
