Totakeabearingfromthemapandfindoutwhichdirectionyouneedtotraveltogetsomewhere,placethemaponahorizontalsurfaceandplaceyourcompassonthemap.Usingtheedgeofthecompassasaruler,placeitsothatitcreatesalinebetweenyourcurrentpositionandwhereyouwanttogo.Rotatethedegreedialuntiltheorientingarrowpointstotruenorthonthemap.Thiswillalsolineupthecompass’sorientinglineswiththemap’snorth-southlines.
Oncethedegreedialisinplace,putthemapaway. Holdthecompasshorizontallyinfrontofyouwiththedirectionoftravelarrowpointingawayfromyou.Usethisarrowtoguideyoutoyourdestination.Turnyourbodyuntilthenorthendofthemagneticneedleislinedupwiththeorientingneedleandkeepitlikethisasyoumoveforward.Lookwhereyouaregoing!

Choosethreelandmarksthatyoucanbothseeandfindthemonyourmap.Oneofthemostdifficultthingsyoucandowithacompass,butoneofthemostimportant,isfindingoutwhereyouarewhenyoudon'tknowyourexactlocationonthemap.Bylocatinglandmarksyoucanseeonyourmap,ideallyaswidelyspreadaroundyourfieldofviewaspossible,youcangetyourselfre-oriented.
Aimthedirectionoftravelarrowatthefirstlandmark.Unlessthelandmarkisnorthofyou,themagneticneedlewillspinofftooneside.Twistthedegreedialuntiltheorientingarrowlinesupwiththenorthendofthemagneticneedle.Oncetheyarealigned,thiswilltellyouwhereyourdirectionoftravelarrowispointing.Correctfordeclination,dependingonyourarea.
Transposethedirectionofthelandmarkontoyourmap.Placeyourmaponahorizontalsurfaceandthenplacethecompassonthemapsothattheorientingarrowpointstotruenorthonthemap.Thenslideyourcompassaroundsothatitsedgepassesthroughthelandmarkonthemap,whiletheorientingarrowcontinuestopointnorth.
Triangulateyourposition.Drawalinealongthecompass'edgeandthroughyourapproximateposition.Thisisthefirstofthreelinesyouwilldrawtofindyourpositionbyformingatrianglewiththeothertwolandmarks.Repeatthisprocessfortheothertwolandmarks.Whenyou’redone,youwillhavethreelinesthatformatriangleonyourmap.Yourpositionisinsidethistriangle,thesizeofwhichdependsontheaccuracyofyourbearings.Moreaccuratebearingsreducethesizeofthetriangleand,withlotsofpractice,youmaygetthelinestointersectatonepoint.
