Looking Forward

Well, my presidential year at MSERA has come to an end. I truly appreciate how much support was offered to me during my tenure as president. A special thank you to Larry Daniel and Franz Reneau for all of their work in making Pensacola a wonderful meeting. I believe that our organization is still moving in the right direction. MSERA is still the organization that allows graduate students and new faculty to find support and mentoring. Networking and collaboration are still key features of MSERA. Underlying all of this support and networking is our organization’s dedication to educational research. The essential elements of MSERA remain the same. What has changed somewhat during my tenure and what will continue to change are the tools that we use to achieve those essential elements. We now are able to register using online tools. I know your new president, Kathleen Campbell, is working to create a paper-free registration system. We had paper-free options this year for the conference evaluation and to sign up for committees. The technology committee, headed by Dustin Hebert, and the publications committee, headed by Rob Kennedy, worked last year to get Research in The Schools and the Researcher online.

They are now working on a webpage that will allow you easier access to those publications and any other digital resources that are or will soon be available. Our graduate

student representative, Lindsey Jackiel, even gave us a social media presence by creating a Facebook page for our organization. Nevertheless, while some of the tools might be new, our raison d’être remains the same; we are here to support you and your research. In the continuation of our organization, I am pleased to announce that we, once again, have upcoming elections. The nominating committee is taking nominations for the following positions, president-elect, secretary, graduate student, and state representatives. The annual meeting of MSERA will be November 5-7, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Knoxville, TN. All members of MSERA and others are invited to submit proposals for (a) Discussion sessions, (b) Display sessions, (c) Symposia, (d) Training sessions, and/or (e) Research in Progress (RIP) sessions. Proposals will be considered if they are submitted electronically by July 15, 2014. Proposals should be submitted in the form of an abstract. All submissions for the James E. McLean Outstanding Distinguished Paper Award and the Hebert M. Handley Outstanding Dissertation/Thesis Award must follow special instructions on the MSERA webpage. Note: All abstract submissions for the 2014 Annual Meeting must be completed online at the MSERA website (http://www.msera.org). Online submission will be available on or around April 1. Primary authors will be notified via email both an acknowledgement of receipt of the proposal and a final disposition of the proposal by September 15. Therefore, it is important that primary authors are able to access email from July 15 through September 15. Submit one completed Proposal Information web page form for each paper. Authors must click on the Send Proposals link on the Call for Papers web page. The web page form requires authors to submit cover sheet information and the abstract. Authors submitting a training proposal must send an abbreviated vita for each trainer to the Program Chair as an email attachment. Call for Nominations for 2015 Board of Directors and Officers

The Nominations Committee seeks nominations for the following leadership positions on the MSERA Board of Directors: Vice President/President Elect; Secretary; 6 State Directors (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, & Tennessee); and Graduate Student Representative.

The Vice President/President Elect serves as Vice President for 2015 and as President for 2016. State Directors and Secretary serve on the MSERA Board for two years (2015 and 2016). Graduate Student Representative is a one year term.

Nominations may be made by any active member of MSERA. Nominees need to submit a letter of acceptance to the Nominations Committee. Four active members must endorse any nominee. Send nominations via email by July 1, 2014 to:

Call for Session Chairs

Do you want to become more involved in MSERA? Serving as a Session Chair is an excellent way for all members from graduate students to professionals to participate in the Annual Meeting. Graduate students are especially considered and are encouraged to serve as Session Chairs. Responsibilities include introducing the session presenters, informing presenters of time limits, and facilitating question and answer periods at the end of the session. This is a valuable contribution to the organization, and your help will be greatly appreciated! Interested members should provide the following information to Dr. Mindy Crain-Dorough at mindy.dorough@selu.edu: Name, mailing address, and e-mail address. 2014 Call for Outstanding Paper Awards

MSERA members are encouraged to apply for the James E. McLean Outstanding Paper Award or the Herbert M. Handley Outstanding Dissertation/Thesis Award. The award application process is a two-step process. First, submit the abstract through the on-line submission process outlined in the Call for Papers. Next, submit an electronic copy (pdf or Word) of the paper or dissertation/thesis summary and a separate electronic cover sheet to the Awards Chair, Gail Hughes (dr.hughesgail@gmail.com) by July 15, 2014. Submissions may not exceed 25 double-spaced, typewritten pages, including narrative, tables, and references. To be eligible for the Dissertation/Thesis Award the dissertation or thesis must have been completed during or after the summer of 2013. The Outstanding Paper Award recipient receives a plaque and $500 to present the paper at the next AERA meeting (2015). The Outstanding Dissertation/Thesis Award recipient receives a plaque and $250.

The Graduate Student Committee encourages all graduate students to join us in Knoxville, November 5-7. The Research in Progress (RIP) strand of presentations will provide you the opportunity to meet other graduate students and to participate in discussions about research planning and implementation. During the conference we have planned special activities to assist you in your pursuit of graduate work. If you are presenting at the conference please encourage other graduate students to join us as we lay the foundations for your future contributions to education research.

2013 MSERA - Research In Progress (RIP) Recipients

The Evaluation Committee had a very successful conference with 59 conference evaluations completed in paper form. The online evaluations were collected by Michele Haj-Broussard. There were 52 evaluations contributed by professional members and seven by graduate students. The final comments and analysis will be completed by the Fall Board Meeting and will be available for the 2014 Conference in Knoxville, TN. We would like to thank our volunteers: Erica King, Erica Tanner, Mary Beth Evans, and Darlene Thompson. Also, we would like to thank the Presenters who were prompt and efficient in providing us with information about the sessions. Reminder: We need more volunteers.

MSERA Researcher Editors' ColumnAs the newly appointed interim co-editors of the 2014 MSERA Researcher, we wish to express our appreciation to the members of the MSERA Executive Board and the general membership for the confidence you have placed in us. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the association and look forward to working with all members of the association in this year of transition.
