1.TITLE:

• Technology decrease the habit of reading in students.

2. BACKGROUND TO THE RESEARCH:

• A sharp decline among youth in reading habits has been observed during the last four years, as books have been replaced by cell-phones, computers, laptops, iPads and tablets.

• There is an old saying that ‘book is the best friend’. However, in era of technology, the time to be spent on reading books is now being spent on surfing the Internet with these gadgets.

• Because of the availability of Internet access, in schools and libraries, students are increasingly becoming involved in this new technology. They prefer to study online rather than reading their course books.

3.THE RESEARCH PROBLEM:

• Reading habits are influenced by technology. Students spend less time with books and other informative sites

4.THE OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH:

• The main objective of the study is identify other factors which are influencing the declining habits in readers and increasing their dependence on technology, such as change of educational system from annual to semester system. The variables include in our study are age, gender and their respective preferences.

5.LITERATURE REVIEW: • Reading according to Holte (1998) adds quality to life and

provides access to culture and cultural heritage. He pointed out that reading empowers and liberates citizens and bring people together.

• Okeke (2000) restates that the art of reading is a priceless instrument for everyone. It is one of the most important activities of life through which we enter into the life and experiences of others and extend our knowledge, scope of experience and enjoyment. It has critical role to play in the overall development of an individual and the nation at large.

• But nowadays there is a significant and widespread change brought up by technology. There is a huge change of decline from reading books to increase in reading from online digital text. "A mode of thinking is being lost," laments Neil Postman, whose book, "Amusing Ourselves to Death," is a warning about the significances of a falloff in reading.

• Kaufman (2001) observed that children spend their time watching TV and playing video games when they are not spending a great deal of time reading and writing. Statistics collected according to Kaufman by the U.S Department of Education "National Centre for Educational Statistics" shows that student’s achievements has been declining in recent times.

• Shabi and Udofia (2009) noted that active learning from books is better than passive learning such as watching televisions and playing games.

6.METHODOLOGY:

• In this research I am going to use survey method and the data which I will collect it will be quantitative and qualitative both.• My data collecting tool was questionnaire. I will select

1500 respondents from random sampling. All respondents are the students from different University.

7.ETHICAL ISSUES:

• I will not force anyone to answer the questionnaire.• I will not do anything that would achieve emotional

harm to my respondents.• I will make sure that all the personal information of the

respondents will be confidential.

8.ACCESS ISSUES• This study is only limited to Karachi because of limited time

and sample is taken by universities of Karachi only.• Financial limitations overly involved to conduct the study in

a broad scale.• Limitations of experience were another issue that upset to

finish the study in composed way.• Conflict of interest from respondents.
