Title Introduction of new wheat seed

ProposalI am proposing “Pakistan Wheat Seeds” to introduce a new kind of wheat named “Pak 2014” in Punjab. Here rural areas of Punjab will be my special target.

BackgroundAgriculture sector accounts for 21% of Pakistan’s GDP. Wheat is the major crop of Pakistan. Wheat has been the most important staple crop of Pakistan since 1960’s and considered the major contributor to GDP. But the situation has turned out different recently as Cotton, sugarcane and rice took the place of good performing crops and pushed the wheat to the lower ranking.

Comparison of Pakistan with other countries

Pakistan has started from the production level of 3,814 KGs in1961 and very slowly reached to 25,214 KGs in 2011. Comparing to its neighboring countries, Pakistan could not perform impressively in the production of wheat.

Here are some problems which are becoming the reason of low cultivation and production of wheat.

In Pakistan, wheat yield per hectare is very low while the cultivation area is squeezing year by year. Wheat yield contains weeds as a major element which is affecting the wheat production, other insecticides and diseases also affect the production of these wheat. Procurement prices of

wheat are not justified. Farmers do not find attracting incentives for growing wheat. They are inclined more towards the other crops instead of wheat.

Non-availability of adequate water is an influential demerit of low wheat productivity. In Pakistan, main source of irrigation is rainfall which very unpredictable. Other sources include canals, wells, canal wells, tube wells, canal tube wells, etc. Pakistan has one of the best systems of canals. But the fact is that the canals are in very bad condition and have been losing their storage capacity gradually. One other source of irrigation is tube well but due to high load shedding the farmers could not use this alternative the prices of diesel are also very high.

Late cultivation of wheat crop is also a reason of low yield of the crop. Most of the lands are not free due to the sugarcane crop, people in Pakistan mostly cultivate wheat crop on the same land after harvesting the sugarcane. This caused late cultivation of wheat and ultimately low per hectare yield.

Opinion of Experts

Pakistan would have to feed more than 200 million people in 2015 and expected wheat demand at that time would be 29.06 million tons. It could never be fulfilled without making tangible governing interventions of ensuring timely provision of irrigating water, seeds, fertilizers and other valuable inputs and later procuring as much as produces by the government that would certainly bridge the need-supply gap and prosper the rural economics.

keep in mind that being a major staple crop, Pakistan’s population derives 40 to 45% of nutrition from wheat. Wheat is considered an essential part of meal from ordinary households to rich families.

By considering all these points I proposed to introduce a new variety of wheat “Pak 2014”. Here are some specialties of this variety due to which I feel that farmers will like to cultivate this variety on their fields.

Per hectare yield of this variety is more than the all other varieties available in the market.

Pak 2014 Average 60 man/hectareAll other varieties Average 40-50 man/hectare

This variety needs less water irrigation as compare to all other varieties available.

Pak2014 3 TimesAll other varieties 5-6 Times

Maturity duration of this variety is less than other varieties. So late cultivation of this variety will not affect the per hectare yield.

Pak 2014 5 MonthsAll other varieties 6 Months

Strong defense mechanism against diseases. Stem of this variety is thick due to which saves the crop from loss of productivity by

fallen of crop.

Due to long stem it produces more straw. This is a new variety in the market so its demand will be more and farmers can earn more

by selling the seed on high prices.

Research ObjectivesObjective of my research is to check if company introduces this new variety in market weather the famers adopt it or not?

Methods Questionnaire: I will use method of questionnaire for my research. I prepared I questioner containing a list of research related questions. I will fill this questioner by the farmers. Sample questioner is attached.

Interviews: I will made interviews from the farmers and recorded these interviews and after that analyzed to access their opinions.

Surveys: I will make survey of agricultural farms and fields to collect data.

Data will be analyzed by using SPSS predictive analytics software. Statistical tests will be run on data to find out the results.

TimescalesJanuary---------February2014: Research on the past condition of the crop in Pakistan.

March ----------April2014: Review of past research made and the varieties available.

May 2014: Research on the current year condition of crop.

June--------July2014: Compilation and distribution of questionnaire, conduct interviews surveys for gathering data.

August: Analysis of data gathered and writing of final report.

ResourcesI have access to internet for research on the past conditions of crop and researches made. Access to some agricultural related organizations in Pakistan. Access to farms which grow wheat on vast area in Pakistan. Access to rural areas and direct interact with the farmers. My employer has agreed to pay all incidental costs which will incurred on the research.
